Serge Ivanoff Exhibition in the California museum of The Palace of Legion of Honor December-January 1954-1955 San Francisco
1 Serge Ivanoff Exhibition in the California museum of The Palace of Legion of Honor December-January 1954-1955 San Francisco
San Francisco McClelland Printing Co. 1954 soft cover Very Good
Very nice, crisp, clean exhibition catalog which is surprisingly hard to find. It measures 5"x7-1/4" and has 46 pages, most of which are the works of art, one per page, full page. All in black and white. A few pages of biography and commentary at front. Ivanoff produced individual works of fine art, but also used his talent in the theatre, in design, in fashion, and in book illustration. He was born in Moscow, but spent much time on England and France.

Stage The Magazine of After Dark Entertainment November, 1936 (George Kaufman, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin)
3 Stage The Magazine of After Dark Entertainment November, 1936 (George Kaufman, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin)
New York Stage Publishing Company 1936 soft cover Very good Condition
Very nice entertainment magazine devoted to nighttime pleasures including dining and dancing, but especially theatre. It's oversized at 10"x14" and has 116 pages. Lots to read, but I think the main story is Men At Work, a lengthy look at musical greats George Kaufman, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. Another fun p0iece is about going to Russia to make the rounds of the Russian theaters. Also of interest are the story of the musical White Horse Inn,T he Alchemy of Music, and the New York Angle on World Wide Fashion. The subscription card is unused and still bound it and there is no mailing label.

The Industrial Might of the U.S.S.R. (U.S.S.R. Pavilion 1939 World's Fair)
4 The Industrial Might of the U.S.S.R. (U.S.S.R. Pavilion 1939 World's Fair)
Moscow Foreign Languages Publishing House 1939 Bardin I. soft cover Very Good
This small pamphlet is one of a large collection prepared for, and sold individually at, the U.S.S.R. Pavilion at the 1939 World's Fair. I have never been able to determine for sure how many pamphlets make up the entire set, but I currently have 19 and have records of an additional 21. They are priced according to subject matter and availability. All measure 4-1/2"x5-3/4". This one contains four black and white photographs, three industrial and one agricultural, with a total of 28 pages. The thrust of this one is that tsarist Russia was an economic disaster, but post Socialist Revolution Russia enjoyed a new day ranking amongst the leading countries. It also makes note of a visit from the writer H.G. Wells. All booklets are in English and are propaganda, some more so than others. If you are looking for a specific title feel free to use the contact button and I'll see if I have it. Eventually they'll all get on here!

USSR Exhibition New York, 1959 (Khrushchov Address Laid-in)
5 USSR Exhibition New York, 1959 (Khrushchov Address Laid-in)
USSR Unknown 1959 card cover Very Good
I've had one of these before, but not with the address of Khrushchov still laid-in. It's dated June 26,1959 and includes a portrait of the Russian leader. The booklet was printed to accompany the USSR exhibit. The cover is laminated as per design -- only fault is a wrinkle in the lamination on the front cover, a fault on the other one I had too. Booklet is otherwise very nice and clean. Measures 6-1/2" x 8-1/4" and has 16 pages. Color photo at back cover and inside back cover.

6 Academician E. Varga The U.S.S.R. As A World Economic Power (1939 U.S. World's Fair Russian Pavillion)
Moscow Foreign Language Publishing House 1939 soft cover Very good
This small pamphlet is one of a large collection prepared for, and sold individually at, the U.S.S.R. Pavilion at the 1939 World's Fair. I have never been able to determine for sure how many pamphlets make up the entire set, but I currently have 19 and have records of an additional 21. They are priced according to subject matter and availability. All measure 4-1/2"x5-3/4". This one has 22 pages and was written by the Director of the Institute of World Economics and Politics of the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R. Pamphlet includes a chart which shows the growth of nations from 1929 to 1938. The U.S.S.R zoomed to the top of the page with France at the bottom of the heap and the U.S.A., Italy, Great Britain and Germany not much better. The second best -- but way down the food chain -- was Japan. If you are looking for a specific title let me know and I'll see if I have it. Some are on here already.

The U.S.S.R. 1986 Moscow, Leningrad and the Caucasus, Crile, George , Jr. M.D.
8 Crile, George , Jr. M.D. The U.S.S.R. 1986 Moscow, Leningrad and the Caucasus
Cleveland, Ohio Self-published 1986 soft cover Very Good
George Crile was a physician married to Helga Sandburg, daughter of the famous author Carl Sandburg. On the title page it says that the manuscript was "criticized, corrected and edited" by her. Crile's father was a founding partner of the Cleveland Clinic. George Crile Jr, offers here an account of a trip taken to the U.S.S. R. during which he was able to interact with colleagues, which of course gave him an insider's view. His tone is one of gratefulness for the experience and pleasure in uncovering much that was good. He died in 1992. The booklet is bound with a plastic comb to lie flat. Very clean inside and out with no creasing and no names or writing. It measures 9"x11". The only fault is a band of toning to top back cover.

New York New Century Publishers 1951, 1953, 1954 July, 1941, April, 1953, July, 1954 Soft cover Good condition
I bought these random issues a long time ago and just found them in a box. They're clearly about Communism. which of course was a big topic of the time. They measure 5-1/2" x 7-1/2" and together have 227 pages. As you might guess, there are a lot of topics, but here's an example: Who Are the Conspirators? An Historic Call for Peace, The Farm Question in California, The Fight To Abolish Segregated Schools, Hands Off Guatemala!, and The Death of Joseph V. Stalin. The 1953 issue is ALL about Stalin. Magazines are clean and tightly bound.

Collier's Magazine June 29, 1946 (Russia, Cost of TV, Native American Dance), La Cossitt, Henry (editor)
13 La Cossitt, Henry (editor) Collier's Magazine June 29, 1946 (Russia, Cost of TV, Native American Dance)
Springfield, Ohio Crowell Collier Publishing 1946 Volume 117, No. 26 soft cover Very Good condition
Usually there's a name or two that jumps out of Collier's, but this time no luck. It's still interesting though with a hard look at what Russia was up to in 1949, penned by Frank Gevasi; an article about how much money it was going to cost to make TV mainstream; and Native American dancing by various tribes (beautiful pictures). There's also a really cool ad by Wurlitzer advertising a jukebox that looks like a work of art! As always, this magazine has fiction too. Magazine measures 10-1/4" x 13-3/4" and sports 82 pages. The whole thing is beautiful inside and out with a spine that feels like satin.

15 Marshak, S. Children and Art in the U.S.S.R. (1939 New York World's Fair)
Moskow Foreign Language Publishing House 1939. U.S.S.R. 1939 Card cover Very good condition
This is one of many booklets which were available to visitors at the Russian Pavilion of the 1939 New York World's Fair. The author wrote under the "order of Lenin". These booklets are very collectible and this one is especially popular. It measures 4-1/4" x 5-3/4" and has 44 pages, four of which are devoted to black and white photographs of children's art (amazing!). The text is very readable and states on the title page "Order of Lenin" and the date 1939. The booklet measures 4-1/2"x5-3/4" and is tightly bound with clean pages. Booklet is illustrated with child art in black and white, but text refers to art as both visual and written with some commentary on theater as well. Though it ostensibly discusses the type of art children created during the period and their involvement with Moscow's Child Art Center, it was also an argument for the improvement of child life in 1939, two decades after the fall tsarist Russia.

Sheet Music Alla Admirably Dedicated to the Famous Artiste and Metro Star Mms. Alla Nazimova (1919), Owen, Anita
17 Owen, Anita Sheet Music Alla Admirably Dedicated to the Famous Artiste and Metro Star Mms. Alla Nazimova (1919)
New York The Jones Music Co. 1919 First edition soft cover Finecondition
Beautiful graphic on this sheet music which is not often seen. Anita Owen wrote both the lyrics and the music and dedicated it to Russian emigre, Alla Nazimova, known for her roles on Broadway and to a lesser degree her silent movies. Nazimova also briefly ran a hotel in Hollywood which she called The Garden of Alla. Rumor has it that Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker, Hepburn and more enjoyed the hi-jinks. I don't usually buy sheet music, but this one is like new and the graphic, if framed, would make a nice statement on the wall. It measures 9" x 12"
