Art Postcards New York Historical Association Cooperstown, New York (Eight Postcards 1964)
1 Art Postcards New York Historical Association Cooperstown, New York (Eight Postcards 1964)
Cooperstown, New York New York Historical Association 1964 Fine condition in good original bag
Here we have eight crisp as new postcards in full color with a glossy finish. I bought them in the small bag they were placed in at the time of purchase. The bag is from the Farmer's Museum Inc. in Cooperstown and the previous owner marked the date on the front -- Monday, August 31, 1964. The cards depict these works of art: Edward Hicks "The Peaceable Kingdom"; Mrs, William Cooper (Elizabeth Fenimore Seated in Otsego Hall"; M.M. Sanford Washington at Princeton; Anonymous, Picking Flowers; John Brewster Jr., One Shoe Off; Statue of Rev. Campbell; Gilbert Stuart, Joseph Brant Thayenonegoea; Anonymous, Young Man In A Gray Linen Suit; and Edward L. Henry "Kept In." All are clean pristine and with sharp corners. No writing on divided back and no stamps. Only fault is browning to back of the bag.

Der Reggeboge The Rainbow; Journal of the Pennsylvania German Society 1988 (Friedrich Krebs)
4 Der Reggeboge The Rainbow; Journal of the Pennsylvania German Society 1988 (Friedrich Krebs)
Birdsboro, Pennylvania The Pennsylvania German Society 1988 Volume 22/1988/2 soft cover Very good
Very nice clean magazine with just some light toning to spine. Tightly bound and no names or writing. This is a good issue because it's devoted to Friedrick Krebs, a well-known fraktur artist who rendered many fancy certificates and the like, but also turned his hand to broadsides. There are many black and white images of his work throughout, as well as a lengthy text. But the unexpected bonus is a small color card bound-in created for an exhibition of his work at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center in Williamsburg Virginia in September, 1988. Magazine measures 8"x9" and has 39 pages. There is a mailing label on the back cover.

Der Reggeboge The Rainbow; Journal of the Pennsylvania German Society July, 1979 (Fraktur Artist Christian Strenge)
5 Der Reggeboge The Rainbow; Journal of the Pennsylvania German Society July, 1979 (Fraktur Artist Christian Strenge)
Breinigsville, Pennyslvania The Pennyslvania Herman Society 1979 Vol. 13, No. 3 Soft cover Very Good
I very much like these older issues of this magazine because they have just one in-depth article. In this issue it's about Christian Strenge who was a fraktur artist and German immigrant who settled in Pennsylvania. It's interesting to read, but especially interesting if you are doing genealogical research on the Strenge name. Magazine measures 6"x9" and has 24 pages. Only fault is a tiny round stain to lower margin of front cover. I have many of these from the 70's and early 80s, so if you are looking for a specific issue let me know and I'll see if I have it.

Der Reggeboge The Rainbow; Journal of the Pennsylvania German Society Vol.24/1990/2 (Johann Valentin Krafft)
6 Der Reggeboge The Rainbow; Journal of the Pennsylvania German Society Vol.24/1990/2 (Johann Valentin Krafft)
Birdsboro, PA Pennsylvania German Society 1990 soft cover Very good
If you are interested in Pennsylvania German genealogy this magazine is a goldmine. I have more (a fairly good sized stack), so if there's one you're seeking use the contact button and I'll see what I have. This one has an especially attractive cover which depicts a Pennsylvania Dutch Virgin Mary. Contents include a study of a Pennsylvania German broadside from the 18th & 19th centuries entitled "A Sorrowful Song About A Terrible Murder"; Pennsylvania church history; a study of a document which sought a pastor in 1731; the career of Lutheran minister, Johann Valentin Krafft; and the ordination and ministry of David Candler. Also includes a skit in both German and dialect English. Magazine measures 8"x9" and is very clean with just the bit of light edge toning.

The Magic of Spinning (Ephemera Laid-in 1969)
9 The Magic of Spinning (Ephemera Laid-in 1969)
Marion, Massachusetts Marion L. Channing 1969 Third Edition soft cover Very good
Very nice, clean booklet with just a pinpoint sized ink stain to bottom front edge. Booklet explains "how to do it yourself with an emphasis on wool, the history of spinning, and other facts." Booklet measures 6"x9-1/4" and has 45 pages illustrated with drawings. What's nice about this one is it has other related goodies laid-in, including a product brochure with 1969 prices from Handcraft Wools of Streetsville, Ontario. Store owner wrote a note to customer on top and marked out a few things on the first page (but you can still read them). There's also a receipt which browned the brochure on the second page, but it is SO interesting to see what $4.70 could buy for your hobby! Also included is a two page list of booklets from Old Sturbridge.

The Story of Casas Grandes Pottery (1991), Cahill, Rick
11 Cahill, Rick The Story of Casas Grandes Pottery (1991)
Tucson, Arizona Bookjum Books 1991 0963085301 / 9780963085306 First Edition,Third printing soft cover Near fine
Very handsome booklet showcasing southwest American Indian pottery. I found a few extra articles on the topic laid-in, none of which caused any browning to pages. I have sequestered them in a plastic bag and will send along with the booklet. Everything is crisp and clean and there is no spine crease. Former owner's name on title page, a few tiny check marks next to a couple names on the list of artists at back, and two circled names on the Quezada family genealogy are only faults. There's a lot of information here, but it's the huge pictures and dramatic black and white design which makes it a stand-out. Booklet measures 8-1/2"x11" and has 89 pages. Text is in both ENGLISH and SPANISH.

14 Huckel, J.F. American Indians First Families of the Southwest (1934)
Albuquerque, New Mexico Fred Harvey Indian Department Albuquerque, New Mexico 1934 Card cover
Beautiful! The art is this oversized booklet is truly lovely. What's also enjoyable about it is the fact that each one-page topic is displayed on the left side and the accompanying art on the right. Holds Native Americans in a favorable light and offers paintings depicting their lovely baskets, pottery and rugs. I bought this from the estate of the original owner who got it on a trip to the southwest in 1934. It's oversized at 9"x12" and is clean and tightly bound with no names. Faults are confined to wear to edge of lower front corner.

20 Yanagi, Soetsu Folk Crafts In Japan 1958 (Related ephemera Laid-in)
Japan Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai 1958 Hard cover Very good
Japanese art items call me from afar, so I was delgihted to find this handsome booklet in hard cover format. The pages are clean as a whistle, as is the cover which shows some sunning to both the spine and to the upper back corner. What's especially nice is the fact that extra goodies are hiding inside. There's a tourist leaflet about the Tokyo Museum of Folk-Crafts, plus a booklet from 1962, also published in Tokyo entitled Art Around Town with an article in English about Raku pottery. The main book is illustrated with black and white photos and one color plate for a total of 19 images. It, too, is in English.
