Cabinet Card Little Girl with Flower Basket Sitting on Doorstep (Joshua Smith Studio, Chicago 1876-1886)
1 Cabinet Card Little Girl with Flower Basket Sitting on Doorstep (Joshua Smith Studio, Chicago 1876-1886)
Chicago Joshua Smith Studio Unknown Very good
Joshua Smith was no ordinary run-of-the-mill photographer who at this point in his career specialized in photographing children such as this cute little doorstep girl. In 1878 he won a coveted Silver Medal at the Paris Exhibition and in 1883 was elected president of the American Photographers Association. He also wrote many articles on chemicals and photography. There is no date on this photo, but research shows that the address on the back of it --206 North Clark Street, Chicago --was occupied by him from 1876-1886. The cabinet card is in sepia.

Chicago Grand Opera Company Program Season 1912-1913 (Prices and seating chart laid-in)
3 Chicago Grand Opera Company Program Season 1912-1913 (Prices and seating chart laid-in)
Chicago, Illinois Chicago Grand Opera Company 1912 soft cover Very good
This is an early program for the opera season of 1912-1913 held at the Auditorium Theatre of Chicago. Other than a few corner creases that I have pressed flat, the program is clean and bright with no names or writing. The current opera was Thais and the program includes its story, plus a list of others past and future, photos of opera stars, and lists of box holders and the nights they were to be present. As always, local ads abound, but these are quite graphically appealing. The program also includes a separate seating chart (see photo) with the various prices of seats. Program measures 7"x10" and has 32 pages.

Chicago Stagebill The Student Prince 1943
5 Chicago Stagebill The Student Prince 1943
Chicago Chicago Stagebill 1943 soft cover Very good condition
The Chicago Stagebill in the 40's is something of a replica of New York's Playbill. The names aren't glittering, but it certainly offered a lot of entertainment. Before the show there were 22 musical performances. The show itself, The Student Prince by Sigmund Romberg, was an operetta created from the book and lyrics of Dorothy Donnelly and directed by J.J. Shubert. It debuted at the Erlanger Theatre, Chicago. Program measures 6-3/4" x 9" and has 12 clean, nice pages.

Greetings From Chicago, Chicago Art Institute Black and White Postcard
7 Greetings From Chicago, Chicago Art Institute Black and White Postcard
Chicago, Illinois International Postal Card Company Fine
A beauty in black and white sent to our girl (I have MANY of her cards) Sophie Nundahl of Perry, North Dakota from Emil who says, "Thank you for the postal you sent me. With best wishes." Maybe Emil was in Chicago to visit the Art Institute which is pictured on the card and says this of itself, "Situated on Michigan Avenue at the head of Adams St. Contains many famous paintings and works of art." The card was not mailed and shows no date, but all the cards I have belonging to Sophie are from 1906 to 1914.

Indiana Limestone Sculpture Groups on the Michigan Avenue Bridge, Chicago Illinois 1928 (DuSable Bridge)
8 Indiana Limestone Sculpture Groups on the Michigan Avenue Bridge, Chicago Illinois 1928 (DuSable Bridge)
Chicago Indiana Limestone Company circa 1928 Good-plus soft cover Good-plus
This is a scarce item printed by the Indiana Limestone Company after the 1928 completion of the magnificent Michigan Avenue bridge in Chicago which is now known as the DuSable Bridge. The sculptures for which it is best known were commissioned by William Wrigley and there are four of them. James Earl Fraser was the sculptor for The Discovers which depicts La Salle and Marquette and also The Pioneers which show the early pioneers who settled the area that became Chicago. Henry Hering also provided two sculptures, Defense which features Captain Heald and the massacre of the Fort Dearborn garrison and Regeneration which depicts the regeneration of Chicago after the great fire of 1871. This items is designed accordion style. Closed it measures 8" x 11-1/4", but opens to 31" with printing on both sides. It's very clean and nice with just a light damp stain to bottom front edge only (does not appear at back) and a little toning to edges. Overall quite nice.

Novelty Wood Postcard Columbia Exposition (E.D. Albro 1893)
9 Novelty Wood Postcard Columbia Exposition (E.D. Albro 1893)
Cincinnati, OH; New York E.D. Albro Manufacturers of Veneers 1893 Very good condition
Here we have a fun wooden postcard printed on bird's eye maple, a souvenir that was available at the Department of Forestry during the Columbian Exposition of 1893 held in Chicago. The card is both novelty postcard and trade card for the E.D. Albro Company located in both Cincinnati, Ohio and New York City. The card says that the company specialized in veneers, hardwood lumber, cigar box lumber, mahogany, and cabinet lumber. It'sa different size than a regular postcard -- it emasures 3" tall and 5-1/2" across. There is no writing on the back and it was never sent by mail. The card is clean and very nice with just a tiny chip to bottom edge.

Official illustrated Guide Chicago Zoological Park (Brookfield, Illinois (1942)
10 Official illustrated Guide Chicago Zoological Park (Brookfield, Illinois (1942)
Brookfield, illinois The Chicago Zoological Society 1942 Card cover Very good condition
Very nice, clean visitors' guide to the zoo. The bright cover is an eye catcher, but the inside has many black and white photographs and 108 pages of info. There's also a wonderful, full color, crisp map which folds out from the inside back cover (see photo). Guide measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2". Only fault is a bit of light foxing around margins of the back cover and the page across from it, a very common area for foxing. There's one more thing, but I very much like it -- it's an inscription written on the top edge of the back of the front cover. It says, "Sunday afternoon May 23, 1943 with Dave Mirin."

This card is unused, so no dates written by sender and no post mark. The only clue to find a date here is the pink cloche hat on the lady in the foreground next to the two men. The cloche hat is a Roaring Twenties fashion favorite. Fred Harvey was the restaurant king of his day. This one was beautiful and located in the Chicago train station. Card is clean and nice and will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve.

Scully Jones Company Slide No. 3
16 Scully Jones Company Slide No. 3
Chicago, llinois Scully-Jones and Company Unknown, but pre-1963
I am fascinated by these sorts of little measuring devices -- can't let one pass me by. This one is not dated, but it's before zip codes which means it's from before 1963. It was made by Scully-Jones, designers and manufacturers of standard and special production tools, including tap and drill chucks, arbors, cutting tools, boring equipment, centers and more. This device provides dimensions for quickly drawing or machining Brown & Sharpe tapers. The slide is in good working condition and measures 4"x8" closed and twice the length when completely extended. Only faults are a small abrasion on one side on the plain white section and tiny corner chip to the reverse.

Chicago Scully-Jones and Company Unknown Very good

It was made by Scully-Jones, designers and manufacturers of standard and special production tools, including tap and drill chucks, arbors, cutting tools, boring equipment, centers and more. This device is two sided, so it performs two functions -- providing a Morse taper number and the size of the taper per foot and per inch which is helpful for drawing them. The slide is in great condition and measures 4"x7-1/4" closed and twice the length when completely extended.
