A Study for the Exchange Hotel Sandusky, Ohio (1980)
1 A Study for the Exchange Hotel Sandusky, Ohio (1980)
Cleveland, Ohio Dalton, van Dijk, Johnson & Partners, Architects 1980 Card cover, spiral binding Very good condition
Very nice clean, tightly bound, document bound with a plastic spiral which is still holding well. Booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" with 24 pages and both diagrams and photographs. The Exchange Hotel was the oldest standing brick structure at the time of the rennovation. it had deteriorated quite a bit after it became a rooming house and a reestaurant/night club. In July of 1977 a raging fire damaged it extensively. It's a very interesting report sprinkled with anecdotes such as Charles Dickens once checked in!

2 Aldrich's Pines Camp & Trailer Court Postcard (Valdosta, Georgia 1948)
Milwaukee, Wisonsin L.L. Cook Co. 1948 Very Good
Bright, colorful postcard from Aldrich's Pines Camp & Trailer Court located on U.S. Rte. 41 in Valdosta, Georgia. It consisted of 50 cottages located right in the heart of the city, each with a bath, and "every convenience" -- steam heat, electric fans, and garages." The card was sent to Mrs. S.L. Ramsey of Warren, Ohio from her son who said this, "Dear mom, Am staying here tonite. Saw Dorothy yesterday. She lives just out of Daytona Beach and has a camp and gas station on the back. Ken"

Carnarvon and North Wales Illustrated Guide Book (Ward Lock and Company 1921-22)
3 Carnarvon and North Wales Illustrated Guide Book (Ward Lock and Company 1921-22)
London Ward Lock and Company 1921-22 Eighth Edition Hard cover Good condition
A trip to Wales in the early 1920's provided beautiful hotels, many sites to be seen, and lots of information in a guide such as this one. The guide measures 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" and has six clean, nice fold-out maps as well as other city plan in text. There are also illustrated with black and white photographs and ads for things needed for the tourist. The only faults are some wrinkles to the spine and few small tears to some map which I repaired with archival tape which is almost invisible. There's only one tear per map due to the need to be careful when opening.

Hotel Del Monte California
10 Hotel Del Monte California
San Francsico Hotel del Monte/ Sunset Printing Early 1900's soft cover
It's a shame the upper front corner is missing from this charming and very early brochure advertising one of the finest resort hotels in the country. Normally I would pass it by because of it, but I didn't because this one is very early (the hotel was built in 1880). There is no stated date, but all it takes is a glimpse of the women guests in their big hats and long skirts and it's easy to place it at the turn of the 20th century. The engravings inside, all in brown tones, are exquisite and the lyrical prose makes you wish for time travel... "From the wide veranda over which riotous roses clamber to make welcome shades of winter sunlight, maidens send forth their Tourney Knights to win favor on the polo field." Brochure measures 5-1/2"x7-1/2" and has 22 pages. VERY Edith Wharton!

Linen Postcard Folkerth's Motel & Restaurant New York State
11 Linen Postcard Folkerth's Motel & Restaurant New York State
Boston, Massachusetts Tichnor Brothers Unknown Fine
This is an unused linen postcard in fine condition. There's no date, but I suspect it's from the 50's. The caption on the back says it was located on U.S. Route 20 between Thruway Exit 48 & 49, two miles east of Alden NY and 25 miles east of Buffalo. This was one of the many mom and pop motels available during the period. The amenities included radio, TV, central heat (odd that that would even be mentioned in upstate New York!), and Beauty Rest mattresses. The owners were Mr. & Mrs. George C. Folkerth.

Luggage Label Hotel Flora Rome (1920's)
13 Luggage Label Hotel Flora Rome (1920's)
Italy Proprieta Artistica circa 1920's Very Good condition
These artful luggage labels are a collectors' dream. I had about a hundred of them some years ago and a small amount are still kicking around. This is one of them. The hotel is handsome in itself, but the stylized sunset is beautiful. The label measures 3-1/4" high and 4-1/4" across. It has not been used on luggage or pasted in an album. Only defects are a small crease to upper right corner and a tiny snip off the point of the lower right corner. Label will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve with cardboard backing.

Menu Colonial Hotel, Cleveland Ohio (December 25, 1906)
14 Menu Colonial Hotel, Cleveland Ohio (December 25, 1906)
Cleveland, Ohio Colonial Hotel 1906 Card cover Good condition
The Colonial Hotel was a fixture of downtown Cleveland from 1900 to 1929. This menu was for the hotel's 1908 Christmas dinner. The light blue cover shows pale stains, a few light spots, and a few scratches, but overall isn't too bad. The original ribbon was untied when I got it, but when I tried to fix it the ribbon tore in my hands like paper. Instead I used a heavy vintage satin ribbon in white. I also used a piece of archival tape to repair the split on the front cover. It'beneath the menu part, so you can't see it all. On then to the dinner --That Christmas the hotel offered celery, olives and salted nuts for an appetizer; bisque of terappin or consomme Delmonico; Planked Roe Shad Moderne or Lobster Newport en Cocotte; Filet Mignon tortini or Supreme of Chicken Parisian; Cardinal Punch, roast cranberry sauce with asparagus, spinach, new potatoes in cream, and lettuce and tomato salad. Desserts included Coupe St. Jacques or Biscuit Glace, assorted cake, fruit, Roquefort or American cheese and coffee. Menus from the Colonial are not often found. This one measures 5-1/4" 8-1/2".

Montreal Travel Brochure The Grove and The Mansions Holiday Apartments (circa 1930's)
15 Montreal Travel Brochure The Grove and The Mansions Holiday Apartments (circa 1930's)
Montreal, Canada The Grove and The Mansions No date (circa 1930's) soft cover Very Good condition
This is nifty little leaflet with information about two different hotel apartment rentals a and a nice map of the area. Leaflets tend to get lost or tossed, so having this one is a plus. Closed the booklet measures 3-1/2" x 6-1/4". Opened it's 10-1.4" wide and 9" tall. The Grove Annex boasted big rooms with modern furniture, rooms with running water and semi-private baths and suites with private baths. Prices ranged from $1.50 to $7. The Mansions were a step up from the looks of things. Here you could get a three room apartment (there's a photo) and 100 of the 150 rooms had private baths. They could also provide radio if required and parking was free. (Small File)

Murray Hill Taxis Ltd. Operating Montreal Tours
16 Murray Hill Taxis Ltd. Operating Montreal Tours
Montreal, Canada Canadian Tourist Association No date circa 1940's soft cover Good condition
This travel guide has it all -- great hotels, restaurants, things to do, things to buy. It measures 7" x 8" and has 25 counted pages with brown printing and sepia photographs. It was tricky to figure out the date, but after several tries I got it -- a photo of Countess Nicol and her son (see photo) did it. The Countess and Count were Little People -- I remembered seeing that picture somewhere else. It was supposed to have been in the 1940's. I think that's about right because the fashions are 30's-40's and there is very nice photo of a tour bus.

Plastichrome Postcard Sharon Villa Motel Route 42 at Route 25 (Sharonville, Ohio)
17 Plastichrome Postcard Sharon Villa Motel Route 42 at Route 25 (Sharonville, Ohio)
Boston ColourPicture Publishers circa 1950's-60's Very good
Believe it or not, this motel is still open from what I can gather. It's located near Cincinnati, Ohio in Sharonville. The card shows a clean, well-cared for place and the Triple AAA logo indicates that it had their approval. The rooms were completely air-conditioned and it was only 12 miles to downtown Cincy. There were 20 rooms with 20 baths and showers, free TV, and adjoining beautiful Sharon Woods where guests could enjoy boating, fishing, and golfing. And there were restaurants nearby too. Card has not been used and will arrive in brand new plastic sleeve.
