20 Play Books Saalfield Artcraft (1953)
1 20 Play Books Saalfield Artcraft (1953)
Akron. Ohio Saalfield Publishing 1953 soft cover in original box Very good condition
I grew up in Akron, Ohio home of the old and beloved Saalfield Publishing Company. The company was known for books in boxes such as this one and also its licensing for Shirley Temple books. Saalfield had novels too for older kids, so we never grew out of them until we weren't kids anymore. This particular box is new to me, but I would have loved it.The box says it contains 20 playbooks for drawing, coloring, picture hunts, riddles, connect the dots, games and mazes. Twenty it may have been, but it ended up housing 22 -- no repeats and no coloring. Fun gift! Measures 6" x 9". Books are clean and bright and box is sturdy. One corner is neatly repaired with brown tape.

Cutout Dressing Books; Japanese Paperdolls
2 Cutout Dressing Books; Japanese Paperdolls
Japan No publisher stated No date. Circa 1940s-50's Card cover Like new
This is a charming paperdoll book with a Japanese flair. There's no date, but the pictures seem to suggest that it comes from the 1940's or 50s. Everything is die-cut, so no scissors necessary. Just pop out the dolls, the clothes, and the accessories and it's time to play. There are four pages filled with items -- I've photographed them all so you can see everything that comes with it. Book measures 7-1/2 x 10-1/2" in beautiful condition.

First Ladies Paper Dolls, Series #1, Dolls 1-8
3 First Ladies Paper Dolls, Series #1, Dolls 1-8
Canton, Ohio J.J. Kaboth Canton Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) 1996 First Series Fine condition
These are new to me. I just got them yesterday and have never seem them before. It looks like the local DAR had them made as a fundraiser. Each doll is in its original packaging and have not been opened. The blue paper at the top offers each lady's biography. The dolls and the inaugural dresses are on the front of each, but you can turn the package over and there's another costume -- two sheets per package. The ladies are as follows: Caroline Scott Harrison, Julia Dent, Grant; Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt; Florence Kling Harding ; Eleanor Roosevelt; Mamie Doud Eisenhower; Nancy Davis Reagan; and Barbara Pierce Bush. There's also a desciption of "THE DRESs" at the bottom of each.

Hit The Mark! A Play Book (Saalfield Publishing 1943)
4 Hit The Mark! A Play Book (Saalfield Publishing 1943)
Akron, Ohio Saalfield 1943 soft cover Very good
Book is clean and crisp with no names or penciling as per directions to play the game. It's not a title you see often because of its ephemeral lifespan. Once you've played it all, it's over. There's no date on it, but given that's it a war game it's most likely from the WWII era. The game requires a pencil and a ruler and pits the players against each other volleying "bullets, bombs, torpedoes and antiaircraft." The second picture explains how it's done. Book measures 6-3/4" x 7-3/4" and has 16 pages. Very scarce.

Cute paper doll set in unused condition. The circle on the front is a clear bubble through which you can see the kewpie on the page behind it. There are six stand-up dolls and a dog that pop out -- two from the back cover and two from pages inside. The clothesa re billed as "wrap-around dressmaker costumes", none of which have been cut. There are five pages and a total of 24 dresses. The set is clean and nice with just a tiny tear to the top of the front cover. The whole thing measures 8-1/4" x 12-1/4"

Kewpies In Kewpieville A Paper Doll Book (Six Stand-up Kewpies) 1966
6 Kewpies In Kewpieville A Paper Doll Book (Six Stand-up Kewpies) 1966
Akron, Ohio Saalfield Publishing 1966 card cover
What a cute book this one is featuring the charming little kewpies and their extensive wardrobe. There's three dolls that pop out of the front cover and three more that pop out of the back. None of the five pages of cute duds require cutting either -- just pop! -- and they're ready for play. Forty-five outfits in all, not counting the hats! the book is lean inside and out and show just one fault --a little damage to the upper right corner thanks to an old price sticker. Otherwise it's great.

Pictorial Review Magazine July, 1931 (Dolly Dingle, Herbert Hoover)
9 Pictorial Review Magazine July, 1931 (Dolly Dingle, Herbert Hoover)
New York The Pictorial Review Company 1931 Volume XXXII, Number 10 soft cover Good-plus
I love this summer cover painted by McClelland Barclay (whom I've always called the guy whose name sounds like it's backwards!). It sets just the right tone for the pages of summer fashions inside. Barclay was best known as a pin-up artist, but he did a lot of commercial advertising work too. The best thing about this issue though is the intact page of Dolly Dingle paper dolls, totally pristine and uncut. Also, of interest is an article about Herbert Hoover in the role of grandfather. The magazine is clean and tightly bound measuring 10-1/2"x14". Mailing label to bottom front and a few small, light water spots only faults. Overall very nice. OVERSEAS ORDERS WELCOME, but please contact us with destination for exact quote, as this is an oversized item.

Stephens Publishing Coloring Books: Kitty-Kat, Playtime Pictures, Play Doctor (1950's)
10 Stephens Publishing Coloring Books: Kitty-Kat, Playtime Pictures, Play Doctor (1950's)
Sandusky, Ohio Stephens Publishing 1950's soft cover Very good condition
Three cute oversized coloring books -- NONE USED -- came my way this weekend in bright, clean condition. They're big at 10-1/2" x 13" and are all clean and tightly bound. Only Kitty-Kat has a little problem -- a very small tear is on the bottom of each page, but I repaired each with a tiny piece of archival tape which doesn't brown and is almost invisible. Only one has a stated date, 1958, and that would be Playtime Pictures. They all, however, appear to be from the 50's, as I bought them together.

What Kind of Dolls Are Choosing Mary Kay Cosmetics As A Career? (1976 Recruitment Die-cut Paper Dolls)
11 What Kind of Dolls Are Choosing Mary Kay Cosmetics As A Career? (1976 Recruitment Die-cut Paper Dolls)
Dallas, Texas Mary Kay cosmetics 1976 soft cover Very good condition
I thought this 1976 recruitment advertising might be pretty common, but it appears to be just the opposite. It's clever, but in a way seems somewhat against the tide of the Women's Liberation Movement of the 70's. The paper dolls are strung together and folded accordion style. The covers asks "What Kind of Dolls are Choosing Mary Kay Cosmetics as a Career?" Inside (on both sides) it showcases 15 top consultants who collectively earned three-quarters of a million dollars selling make-up. The idea was to show the diversity of the consultants -- club woman, educator, artist, two minister's wives, homemaker, airlines stewardess, stenographer, school teacher, production worker, fashion model, dentist's wife, professional volunteer, arts patron, and military wife. Each woman (all attractive) is named and pictured in black and white with a biography. The last page tells you how to join the crowd. The piece measures 8" tall and 3-1/2" at widest parts. This is an especially good collectible, not only because of the company and its products, but because it shines a light on how much life has changed.

A Friend Paper Doll (1967), Anglund, Joan Walsh
12 Anglund, Joan Walsh A Friend Paper Doll (1967)
USA Boucher Associates 1967 Box Good condition
Joan Walsh Anglund was a huge hit in the 60's and 70's and still has a following today. I have sold several of her sweet little books and have a couple on here at this writing. This, however, is not a book. It's a paper doll with 12 outfits none of which have been cut. The dolls and her clothes are in great shape, the scissors is still there, and so is the stand. The only thing missing is a small tube of glue which would be dried out anyway if were there. The doll is 5" tall. The box itself measures 5-3/4" x 6". There's a few nicks here and there to the box, mostly at the edges, but not too bad. Overall this is a nice collectible

The Alphabet Butterfly Coloring Book for Limerick-Loving Lepidopterists (1975), Brewer, Jo (editor)
13 Brewer, Jo (editor) The Alphabet Butterfly Coloring Book for Limerick-Loving Lepidopterists (1975)
Waltham, Massachusetts Capra Press 1975 First Edition stated Card cover Very good condition
This may be the cutest coloring book I've ever had. It's a cute, sneaky, fun item which teaches kids (and adults) about butterflies and limericks. None of the pictures have been colored, so the fun is yours. It's really a book you can play with no matter what your coloring skills are. Some of the pictures are for adults, others for kids. The book measures 7" x 8-1/2" and is clean and tightly bound with 61 pages. There is a bit of sunning to spine and a tiny stain to front cover by spine, but otherwise it's great.

Antique Airplanes Coloring Book (1975), Copeland, Peter E.
14 Copeland, Peter E. Antique Airplanes Coloring Book (1975)
New York City Dover 1975 card cover Very Good Condition
What a fun coloring book for anyone crazy about early aviation. Amongst the examples waiting to be made beautiful are Orville Wright's plane from 1903, the Spirit of St. Louis, WWI German bombers, a flying boat and much more. All drawings were made by Peter F. Copeland who at the time of publication was Chief of the Illustration Department for the Smithsonian. NONE of the pages have been colored. The book measures 8" x 11-1/2" and has 41 counted pages. One small defect is a blank name sticker (see photo) on the first page. The only other issue is a manufacturing defect -- the lamination on the front cover does not go all the way across to the side edge of the front cover, resulting in a thin line at the edge.

18 Giles, Ken Weatherbird Presents Super Circus Great Animal Show (circa 1949-56)
U.S.A. Weatherbird Shoes Circa 1949-56 soft cover Fine condition
This is an astonishing find based on Super Circus, one of the earliest TV shows for children. It was sponsored by Weatherbird Shoes and began in Chicago in 1949 and ended in New York in 1956. I was born in 1951 and we had TV by'52, but I have no memory of this show. All I remember is Ding-Dong School with Arlene Francis! This booklet is in amazing condition -- crisp and clean as new with just a small bit of wear to a small section of top back edge. It's a pop-out book of animals with instructions on how to assemble them. There are five pages with all pieces intact. Measures 10" x 10-1/2" and is truly rare.
