Californie Illustration Pour L'Exposition De Paris 1900. California Paris Exposition.
2 Californie Illustration Pour L'Exposition De Paris 1900. California Paris Exposition.
Calfornia / Paris California Paris Exposition Commission 1900 soft cover Good condition
This is such a seldom seen and beautiful booklet it's amazing that someone kept it only to let it incur defects. I never like to buy items with problems, but this one called for a rescue mission. The biggest problem when I first got it was the cloth spine strip which was completely missing on the front and the spine, but somehow remained on the back. I used a heavy brown book tape, but only on the naked parts -- if you look at the back cover you'll see the original cloth. The others issues are two snapped off corners, one page where something sticky must have caused a small abrasion, and some rubbing to gold edges. The booklet has gorgeous graphics in pastel colors and much information in three languages -- French, English and German. The booklet measures 7" x 10" and has been deeply discounted due to condition.

Earl Carroll's Vanities Beauty Souvenir (1940's)
3 Earl Carroll's Vanities Beauty Souvenir (1940's)
California Oscar Tittman No date. circa 1940's soft cover Very good
Collectors of Hollywood and California memorabilia will love this program from Earl Carroll's Vanities, a nightspot once located on Sunset Blvd. in L.A. The booklet measures 8"x11" and has plentiful black and white photographs as well as odd facts such as his measurements for the perfect girl (including her ankles and wrists) and his Demandments of Beauty. I counted 16 pages. Booklet is clean and tightly bound with just a bit of rubbing to spine area. Earl Carroll died at the age of 55 in a bizarre plane crash in 1948. I also have some postcards of the showgirls.

Fabulous Finocchio's Night Club San Francisco (Circa 1950's Two Brochures)
4 Fabulous Finocchio's Night Club San Francisco (Circa 1950's Two Brochures)
San Francisco Finocchio's Night Club No date. Circa 1950's - early 60's card covers Very good
Here we have two brochures from Finocchio's, a popular club which was located in San Francisco. It began as a speakeasy during Prohibition, then morphed into a club with lavish shows featuring female impersonators once it was legal to serve alcohol again. The green and white brochure measures 6" x 7-1/4" and opens to three times that size showing individual performer pictures. It was designed to be mailed as a souvenir, but it was not. The smaller brochure measures 4" x 7-1/2" and opens to twice that. This one shows drink prices on the reverse side. Scotch was $1.15 and bourbon, gin, vodka, rum and cordials were $1.10, though premium brands required an additional $1.15. Both are clean and attractive. The club closed in the late 90's after the death of the owner.

Fred Harvey Restaurant Menu 1945 (Aid to Military Ribbon Identification)
5 Fred Harvey Restaurant Menu 1945 (Aid to Military Ribbon Identification)
Kansas Fred Harvey Restaurants 1945 card cover Very good
Fred Harvey was a restaurant phenomenon. On this menu it sums up his amazing growth with this line, "from Cleveland to the Pacific coast." This particular menu was printed for the restaurant located in Union Station, Los Angeles and dated Monday, May 28, 1945. In addition to the patriotic cover it's interesting to see how much food has changed in America. Of course the prices are give-away by today's standards -- imagine a cocktail for 35 cents -- but you would rarely see such offerings as what Fred Harvey was serving up for lunch in '45. How about some braised smoked beef tongue with noodles and raisin sauce? Or maybe "our own baked beans with salt pork"? Nice collectible.

Group For Creative Meditation Tenth annual Transpersonal Conference March 18, 19, 1978
6 Group For Creative Meditation Tenth annual Transpersonal Conference March 18, 19, 1978
Ojai, Califonria Group for Creative Meditation 1978 card cover Very Good Condition
This is still a very relevant booklet as it provides not only the itinerary for the two day conference, but commentary from each speaker explaining the various topics which include: Holistic Meditation; Silence; and Synthesis of the Visible and Invisible. The text is dense, so there's a lot to read in this 36 page booklet. It measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" and is very clean and tightly bound with no writing. The only fault is some toning around the edges of the cover. Otherwise crisp and nice.

Hotel Del Monte California
8 Hotel Del Monte California
San Francsico Hotel del Monte/ Sunset Printing Early 1900's soft cover
It's a shame the upper front corner is missing from this charming and very early brochure advertising one of the finest resort hotels in the country. Normally I would pass it by because of it, but I didn't because this one is very early (the hotel was built in 1880). There is no stated date, but all it takes is a glimpse of the women guests in their big hats and long skirts and it's easy to place it at the turn of the 20th century. The engravings inside, all in brown tones, are exquisite and the lyrical prose makes you wish for time travel... "From the wide veranda over which riotous roses clamber to make welcome shades of winter sunlight, maidens send forth their Tourney Knights to win favor on the polo field." Brochure measures 5-1/2"x7-1/2" and has 22 pages. VERY Edith Wharton!

Reedley, California Leo K. Brown 1970 soft cover
This is a 1970 reprint of the original 1915 booklet produced to accompany an exhibit held at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. It is clean and tightly bound with just a small stain to upper front corner from an old price label which fell off and residual glue on reverse side of cover from a removed bookplate (no paper still adhering). Judith Shea: La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art (March 18- May 22, 1988)
10 Judith Shea: La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art (March 18- May 22, 1988)
La jolla, California La jolla Museum of Contemporary Art 1988 First Edition Card cover Fine condition
Very nice, clean art catalog which was published to accompany two exhibitions, first in La Jolla and secondly at the University of Massachusetts. At first glance it would appear that the artist created clothing. In a way she did, but no one wore the cloth ones and definitely not the sculptured metal ones. As you can see, everything is very basic in design, recalling the shapes of the 1950's. The catalog measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 24 pages.

La Reina: Los Angeles In Three Centuries (1929)
11 La Reina: Los Angeles In Three Centuries (1929)
Los Angeles, California Security Trust and Savings Bank 1929 Card cover Very good condition
I had one of these a long time ago -- must be 18 years or so. What a delight to see it again after all this time. This one is nicer too than the one had before. It shows a little wear to the lower front edge and a couple small tears to the yapped edges which I repaired on the back with small pieces of almost invisible archival tape. This is a history of Los Angles replete with lots of wonderful black and white photographs. It was published to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Security Trust and Savings Bank. The souvenir measures 5-1/2" x 9" with 208 pristine pages.

Los Angeles County (Booklet 1930's)
12 Los Angeles County (Booklet 1930's)
Los Angeles Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County No date circa 1930's soft cover Fine
The colorful cover of this attractive booklet is definitely an eye catcher and the condition is superb. At first glance it appears to be a travel guide, but is not. It's a sort of state of the union telling both residents and tourists all the many reasons to be glad they're there! Oddly, it has no date, but the last year quoted for research and statistics is 1936. Black and white photographs abound and are printed on coated paper. Covers all facets of county life. Measures 5-1/4"x7-1/2". An added bonus is a flyer tucked inside from a San Francisco restaurant called The Challenger offering an economy plate luncheon at thirty cents! Two choices -- sausages or spring lamb, both with sides.

Los Angeles To-Day July, 1924
13 Los Angeles To-Day July, 1924
Los Angeles, CA Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce 1924 soft cover Very Good
Beautiful booklet with a great cover image, plus numerous color photos inside which augment an informative text written for the tourist. Also at the front is a Union Pacific ad which tells visitors about train service. The entire booklet is devoted to the beauty of the area and things for tourists to see and do. But those who love California architecture will also love the emphasis on the housing styles. 32 pretty pages. Measures 5"x6-3/4". The only fault was rusted staples, which I took out and put in new ones. (Travel Box I)

San Francisco, CA M. Geraldi & Sons circa 1960's Card cover Very Good condition
What a graphic! The second I saw this menu I was hooked. It's a big one too measuring 10" x 14" and very clean and nice. It opens to show two pages of appetizers, cocktails, specials, sea food, salads, fishermen's dinners, steak, sandwiches, dessert, child's plate and beverages. The back of the menu is all about wine, champagne, mixed drinks, and other alcohol including beer and ale. (Entertainment II)

Postcard Market Street Palace Hotel San Francisco, California
18 Postcard Market Street Palace Hotel San Francisco, California
SanFrancsico, California Scenic View Card Company No Date Fine condition
Bright, color saturated view of San Francisco's Market Street with the spotlight on the Palace Hotel in the foreground. Also of interest are the trolleys painted in sherbet hues. An exceptionally pretty card. It's amazing that this card was ever postmarked though because the sender provided two different names and addresses. The first one omits the state and shortens the name of the town. I know it was supposed to be Springfield, Ohio because I have had many postcards addressed to this recipient. Mesasage reads "Drove on this street the Sunday we went to Golden Gate Park. Ate lunch in the Cliff House on the ocean front and had tea and cakes in the Oriental Garden. Took a nice drive along the coast. Have been to the Yosemite National Park, a marvelous place. Amy V." Card will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve.

Real Photo Postcard Cliff House and Seal Rocks, San Francisco (1940's)
20 Real Photo Postcard Cliff House and Seal Rocks, San Francisco (1940's)
Unknown Location EKC circa 1940's Fine condition
Very nice, clean postcard which has a glossy finish and a white margin. The back is not divided and there is no writing or stamping. The stamp box shows the logo of the EKC Company. The logo is one clue to the date, as are the cars and the history of the Cliff House. It opened originally in 1858 and then again in 1863, 1877, 1883, 1896 and 1937. Clearly this photo was taken after the 1937 renovation. The hotel perches over Ocean Beach, a site that claimed some 30 ships.Card will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve.
