The Cosmopolitan Magazine March 1903 (Beauty and the Stage, Beauty at 50, Police of Europe)
1 The Cosmopolitan Magazine March 1903 (Beauty and the Stage, Beauty at 50, Police of Europe)
Ne York Cosmopolitan Magazine Co. 1903 Volume XXXiV, Number 5 soft cover Very good
Very nice clean, tightly bound magazine with a complete spine stip. The yapped edges have been trimmed, but they did their job keeping the pages pristine. The advertising at both front and back is fun in itself, but there's also much to read, including four complete pieces of fiction. There's two articles about beauty -- one as related to actresses (who out-earned their male counterparts)and also beauty and the 50 year old woman. Other topics include police systems in Europe, The Young Napoleon, and Von Lenbach the painter.

The Murder of George Wythe (Colonial Virginia Published 1955)
2 The Murder of George Wythe (Colonial Virginia Published 1955)
Williamsburg, Virginia The Institute of Early American History and Culture 1955 card cover Very good
Very nice clean booklet which tells a fascinating tale. George Whythe may not be a household name, but he was a big deal in colonial America -- first American law professor, abolitionist, noted classics scholar, Virginia judge, and the first of the seven Virginia signers of the United States Declaration of Independence. He also served as representative in the Continental Congress and at the Constitutional Convention.AND he taught and mentored to Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall, and Henry Clay. So when he turned up murdered it was no small mater. The booklet solves the case with 64 detailed pages. It measures 6"x9" and is very clean and attractive. Contains two essays, "The Murder of George Wythe" by Julian P, Boyd and "Examinations of George Wythe Swinney for Forgery and Murder" by W. Edwin Hempill.

Birth Control Methods (Margaret Sanger, 1924), Bocker, Dorothy M.D.
3 Bocker, Dorothy M.D. Birth Control Methods (Margaret Sanger, 1924)
New York city Birth Control Clinical Research 1924 Card cover Fine condition
I was astounded to find this item in a flat at an auction filled with industrial items. The author, Dr. Dorothy Bocker, wrote this this important booklet, but she also was researcher for Margaret Sanger. Lay people interviewed the patients about income, education, family size, and health, but if a woman didn't have a feasible health problem by law the clinic had to decline to treat her. Dr. Bocker distributed these booklet to other doctors whom she required to sign his or her name on a page for it. This one was #9949, signed by Dr. K.E. Schenefren. The booklet measures 6" x 9-1/4" and has 31 pages including several photographs of the methods and information on their values and failures. A very scarce collectible.

Manuals Military Pensions 1899 (2 booklets), Gaddis, Edgar T.; Tallmadge, T.W.
5 Gaddis, Edgar T.; Tallmadge, T.W. Manuals Military Pensions 1899 (2 booklets)
Unknown Location Unknown publisher 1899 soft cover
Here are two booklets published in 1899 by two different attorneys, Edgar T. Gaddis and T.W. Tallmadge, each offering veterans information on pensions and bounties. The brown one is the Gaddis -- the other is missing its cover, hence has no title, but is clean and intact and was written by T.W. Tallmadge. The Gaddis booklet is 20 pages long and measures 3-3/4' x 5-3/4". I repaired the spine and one spot inside the front cover with archival tape which is almost invisible and does not darken. Gaddis hit on these topics: The Old Law Granting Pensions, The Disability-Dependent Law, and The Increase of Pensions Under Act June 27, 1890 and Re-issue. Veterans involved served in the Mexican War, the Indian Wars from 1832-1842, the War of 1812, and the Spanish War. The Tallmadge booklet covers Army Nurses, the new bounty law, a disability chart to show what injuries were worth, and lots of testimonials from happy vets who used Tallmadge's services. 40 pages for this one,

9 Reed, Thomas B. Reed's Parliamentary Rules With Suggestions For Special Rules (1900)
Chicago Rand McNally 1900 Later printing Hard cover Very good
Very nice, clean, pocket sized book which was initially published in 1894, then again in 1898 and here in 1900. The condition is quite good and the book is small at 4"x 6" with very clean bright end papers and pages. The exterior shows a little rubbing to the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine, but no loss of fabric. There are 19 chapters in 229 pages. There was also a tiny tear to top edge at the very back of the book, all of which were repaired by me with tiny pieces of almost invisible and non-browning archival tape. I also just noticed a clean snip to the corner of the last blank page, but, fortunately, the back end paper was not involved. The author was Speaker of the House of Representatives.
