Cutout Dressing Books; Japanese Paperdolls
4 Cutout Dressing Books; Japanese Paperdolls
Japan No publisher stated No date. Circa 1940s-50's Card cover Like new
This is a charming paperdoll book with a Japanese flair. There's no date, but the pictures seem to suggest that it comes from the 1940's or 50s. Everything is die-cut, so no scissors necessary. Just pop out the dolls, the clothes, and the accessories and it's time to play. There are four pages filled with items -- I've photographed them all so you can see everything that comes with it. Book measures 7-1/2 x 10-1/2" in beautiful condition.

If you appreciate Japanese art this is a particularly interesting catalog, as it shows creative "waves" which changed Japanese calligraphy. This went on for a long period of time to reach the Avant Garde Calligraphy Movement in Japan which shares a relationship between the Avant Garde and Western Abstract Art. Another essay titled The Calligraphic Spirit and Modern American Art. From there we see the many samples of modern calligraphy. The catalog measures 9" square and has 111 pages. ENGLISH language primarily. (Asia Box 1)

Fortune Magazine March, 1935 (Japanese Silk; 6 Day Bike Race Madison Square Garden)
6 Fortune Magazine March, 1935 (Japanese Silk; 6 Day Bike Race Madison Square Garden)
New York Time-Life 1935 Volume XI, No. 3 soft cover Good
There is a bit damage to this one, but I bought it anyway because the article about Japanese silk is fantastic! I'll get to that soon, but first you need to know that the upper corner of the last couple pages and the back cover corner were all creased up. I have been able to smooth it all out (see photos)-- we're talking just a couple pages at the back. One required archival tape before the corner fell off and one has a small loss of a corner. The cover just shows several creases at the corner. There's also a small bit of wear to both the top and bottom of the spine, but it doesn't impinge on the binding at all. Everything is tight. Now then, the best story in this issue is a TEN PAGE extravaganza about Japanese cloth. If you love textiles, or all things Japanese as I do, this one's a keeper! Other articles are about International Cement, Soviet Art, symphony finance, Social Security, the six day bike race at Madison Square Garden, and Duparquet, the company which provided quality cooking utensils and kitchen design. Magazine is huge at 11"x14", but still ships for $2.00 in the U.S. OVERSEAS ORDERS WELCOME, but due to size and weight the shipping will be higher. Contact me with destination and I will provide an actual cost. No obligation.

10 Japonisme: Japanese Influence on French Art 1854-1910 (2 catalogs, 1975)
Cleveland, Ohio Cleveland Museum of Art et al. 1975 First edition soft cover Very good
These are examples of beautiful and informative art catalogs. There's a large one that's like a book and another thin one to augment it. The smaller one is most common, but usually it doesn't include the over pages protecting the cover as shown here. There is much to read in the large book which features full page tipped-in color art in addition to that which is printed on the page, primarily in black and white. The catalog measures 8" x 10-1/2" and is very clean and tightly bound. Cover is plain white and pristine, designed with a dustjacket which shows a small horizontal crease to lower front edge. Printed on high quality glossy paper. Essays include the following: Japonisme; Early Sources and the French Printmaker 1854-1882 by Gabriel P. Weisburg; Japanese Influence on French Prints 1883-1910 by Phillip Dennis Cate; Japanese Influence on French Painting 1854-1910 by Gerald Needham;. and Japonisme and French Decorative Arts by Martin Eidelberg and William R. Johnston. The smaller booklet is in black and white with both photos and art. It measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 26 counted pages. Catalogs were published to accompany the exhibit held from July 9, 1985 to January 26, 1976 at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Rutger's University Art Gallery; and The Walters Art Gallery. Oriental Art Catalog August 27, 88, 1970 Robert C. Eldred Co., Inc.
14 Oriental Art Catalog August 27, 88, 1970 Robert C. Eldred Co., Inc.
East Dennis, Massachsuetts Robert C. Eldred Co., Inc. 1970 Card cover Very good condition
Catalog is clean and bright with no tears and no writing, and is tightly bound. The only fault is a trim to the yapped edge at side edge of front cover. This is often done because the overhang develops small tears which end up with pieces of the edge falling off. This trim was better than most. The catalog measures 7" x 10-1/2" and has black and white photographs which show both Chinese and Japanese items. Most of the works came from the estate of Andrew R. Dole of Oak Park, Illinois. Session I focused on Japanese art. Among the items were prints and paintings, snuff bottles, rugs, wood carvings, sculpture, ivory, netsuke, inro and lacquer, furniture, textiles and more. The second session was Chinese art including jewelry, pottery, porcelain, rugs and metals.

16 The Foundation of Japanese culture and the Oomoto Religion (1957)
Japan Oomoto Cultural Institution 1957 first edition stated soft cover Very Good condition
This one's a small booklet which focuses on the relation between the culture in the Tamba region and the Oomoto religion. The booklet measures 5" x 7-1/2" and has 11 pages. The only fault is creasing to the last page due to a plate affixed with water and glue to the final page showing edition and other publishing information. There are several several photographs at the front. The Oomoto religion is a Sectarian Shinto sect, one of many which sprang up in the 1950's. Not often seen.

The Most Promising Artist Grand Prix Print Contest Catalog (1984)
17 The Most Promising Artist Grand Prix Print Contest Catalog (1984)
Japan RYU International Gallery 1984 12th annual Card cover Very good condition
This catalog is written in both Japanese and English. I have no idea where I got it and when - it just fell out of the closet this morning. According to the preface this 1984 contest was celebrating its 12th year. It had also garnered much interest with the American collector population which very much appreciated contemporary Japanese prints. The catalog is handsomely designed with a plain white cover over which is what you see in the pciture -- a black and white dustjacket. Each print is pictured, as is the artist. The fun part is to see at the back if your faves won. Catalog measures 7-1/4" x 10-1/4" and is very clean and tightly bound. Minor edge wear in spots is on;y detraction.

Town and Country Magazine May, 1963
18 Town and Country Magazine May, 1963
New York City Hearst Publishing 1963 Soft cover Good
This is an upscale magazine with articles about "the good life". In this issue there is an extensive article about Paris, another about golf and other sports enjoyed in Japan. and the most beautiful piece of all about living with great paintings by Bonnard, Matisse, Vullard, Monet, Chagall, Cezanne and Modigliani. Accompanying it is a parade of art in full page and full color and all printed on very substantial paper. There's also a travel piece on New Orleans. The young girl on the cover is Charlotte Bingham who wrote a book titled "Coronet Among the Weeds." Magazine measures 10" x 12-3/4" with 166 pages. As you can see the upper corner is missing. There were some small tears too which I repaired with archival tape. Overall the magazine is clean and tightly bound.

19 Allen, Ellen Goodman Japanese Flower Arrangement In A Nutshell: A Primer (1966)
Rutland, Vermont Charles E. Tuttle 1966 21st printing card cover Very good condition
The Charles Tuttle company is noted for its interesting and beautiful books about Japan. They also published the collectible small booklets for the tourist trade after WWII. This booklet was first published in 1955 and has been reprinted many times because it's filled with useful information offered in straightforward language. The focus here is on various forms of Moribana and Heika style attangements. It even includes photos of more advanced free-style arrangements which show what can be done with creativity and basic principles. The booklet measures 6"x8" and has 55 pages printed on quality coated paper. The only defects are sunning to spine and a tiny tear to the dustjacket which covers a plain white front cover. The tear is at the top of the front endflap and I repaired it at the back with a small piece of archival tape.
