American Forestry Magazine December, 1918 (WWI Emphasis)
1 American Forestry Magazine December, 1918 (WWI Emphasis)
Washington D.C. American Forestry Association 1918 Volume 34, Number300 soft cover Good 1
Magazine shows a little light soil to cover and a flat crease at lower front corner. The spine strip is intact, though I glued it a little at top and bottom. Magazine has no label and the pages are pristine aside from a bit of light soil and tiny flat creases to lower corners of a few pages at front. Printed on quality coated paper. Many black and white photographs. Because this was war time even forestry turned its attention to the war and those who served in it. Some of the topics include: the reforestation of France; the effect on war on France's forests; how forestry and tree culture concern the disabled soldier; memorial trees for dead soldiers; and Christmas boxes for the forest and lumber regiments.

Folding Postcard Nashville, Tennessee WWI Military Message, 1917
2 Folding Postcard Nashville, Tennessee WWI Military Message, 1917
Unknown Unknown 1918 Card cover Good
This is one of those cascading postcard mailers, but the point of this one is not so much the views as the message. All but two pictures (plus reverse views) are gone -- likely the victims of the kids this WWI soldier sent to his family in Ulrichsville, Ohio. His name is Lt. Ernest C. Fox and he was on his way by train to Camp Sheridan, Montgomery, Alabama. The card was sent to his wife and children with this message: "Sept. 17, 1917, Dear Wife and Family, We arrived this far OK. Talk about colored folks, why that is about all one sees here. We have 16 cars on this train now. 498 men and 14 officers. Most of the country so far is just about like home. We have not had our breakfast yet. It is surely nice traveling on the standard Pullman. Will write you when we get to Montgomery, Alabama which will be about tomorrow morning, as we are late because of a heavy train. Love to all, Father."

Lewis Machine Gun (Airplane Type Model 1917-18 Caliber.30)
3 Lewis Machine Gun (Airplane Type Model 1917-18 Caliber.30)
Utica, New York Savage Arms Corporation WWI era Card cover Fair
This item would never win a beauty contest. I almost didn't buy it, but then I opened the back cover and saw the magnificent fold-out in COLOR. And that did it! When I got it home I did the following to improve it: used book cover cleaner and tons of paper towels, used black book tape on spine to stabilize binding; and used document pad to clean smudges. Believe it or not, it's actually come a long way. The pages are quite clean and tightly bound -- item is not often seen. It easures 4" x 6" and has 63 pages. Former owner's name is stamped on first and last pages and is written on back of front cover. Booklet provides much technical and practical advice.

France, England, U.S.A. Michelin Tire Company 1919 soft cover Very good
The Michelin Guides to WWI are collected by WWI buffs. Most of the time you see these without their jackets, but this one retains it. The jacket is clean and the paper is still crisp, but there is some foxing to the right edge of the front cover and a tiny chip to upper corner of it. The booklet itself is pristine with no names or writing. It measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" and has 64 pages. Printed on quality coated paper and illustrated with black and white photographs and maps. Photograph WWI Doughboy Wearing Campaign Hat (circa 1911)
5 Photograph WWI Doughboy Wearing Campaign Hat (circa 1911)
Unknown No Photographer stated Circa 1911 Card folder Fine condition
I love a box of photographs, especially when they're hidden inside a folder. You never know what awaits. Most of the time it's a disappointment, but once in a while you find a good one. I very much like this one for a couple reasons -- one, we can see details of his uniform and his campaign hat which resembles that of a mountie, and two, we're reminded of the legions of young men who fought in WWI. The photo is sepia toned and out of its folder measures 4-1/4" x 6-1/4". Sadly, there is no information on the reverse side. The closed folder measures 5-1/4" x 7-1/2" and is clean and well cared for. I wish I could find his family, but it's unlikely with nothing to go on but the image itself.

7 Rheims And the Battles for Irs Possession (Michelin Guides to the Battlefields (1919)
Milltown, New Jersey Michelin Tire Co. 1919 Flexible boards Very good condition
The Michelin guides are quite a good series with much information for the tourist. But they also provide a concise view of the devastation in France in the aftermath of WWI. The guide measures 6"x 8", has 176 pages printed on quality coated paper, and is illustrated with small photographs throughout. The boards are very clean as are the pages. The only faults are lack of dust jacket and a tiny chip to the side edge of the front free endpaper. Very collectible, as there is a guide for every major battle field in France.

Victory Club Album Official Government Photographs (WWII)
12 Victory Club Album Official Government Photographs (WWII)
Unknown Location Hi-Speed Gas Stations circa 1942-43 hard cover Very Good Conoition
This album is so attractive and in very clean, nice condition. There's a little wear to the top edge at the front near the spine, but it's minor. The album was published following Pearl Harbor, so it dates around 1942 to 1943. The album contains fifty attractive blue tinted cards which children could paste in as they received them. I can't seem to find how they got them, but they appear to have been a Hi-Speed Gas Stations premium for customers' children who joined the Victory Club. This album shows all 50 photos, each of which takes an entire page. The album measures 9-3/4" across and 7-1/4" high.

13 Waechter und Anzeiger Kriegs Album WWI(Captions in English) Vol. 1 No. 13, 1915
Cleveland, Ohio German Consolidated Newspaper Company 1925 soft cover Fine Vol. I No. 13
Very interesting WWI magazine published in Cleveland, Ohio in 1915. There's one page of text to reverse side of front cover in German, but the rest is comprised of photographs with both German and English captions. Fifteen pages of military photos including, but not confined to, these: German artillery advancing into the line of fire on horseback, a Bismarck Monument erected by German soldiers in France, Russian prisoners carrying their machine guns, Russian victims of heavy artillery fire, and German ammunition column on the march near Viguelles (France) with a heavily laden vehicle and two bicycles. We have many more of these magazines, so if you are seeking a different issue from 1915 let me know and I'll see if I have it.

Ypres and Battles of Ypres Michelin llustrated Guide 1920(WWI)
14 Ypres and Battles of Ypres Michelin llustrated Guide 1920(WWI)
France Michelin 1920 Flexible boards with Dustjacket Very good
The Michelin Guides to the WWI battlefields are quite wonderful. I have quite a few right now (all with their elusive dustjackets) and will be listing them. If you want a different one right now just use the contact button and I'll check and see if I have it. The book measures 6"x8-3/4" and is printed on quality coated paper and illustrated profusely with small black and white photographs and full page maps. The book itself is in fine condition. The jacket is quite good too, but does show some light foxing to the outer edge at front, a tiny chip at each lower corner, a few small edge tears, and a small chip at the center of the spine. Covers the German offensive, the Allies offensive, the German offensive of 1918, the Battle of Flanders Hill, the Capture of Kimmel Hill, the last German attack, the Allies victory offensive, and a guide to visiting the battlefields.

15 Aldrich, Mildred A Hilltop on the Marne: Being Letters Written June 3 -- September 8, 1914 (published 1916)
Boston Houghton Mifflin Co. 1916 Thirteeth Impression Hard cover Very good condition No Dustjacket
I knew of this book, but never read it. I'm so glad I bought it though. It's the story of a woman in her 60's who came to France from the U.S. and was living in a beautiful house in a sleepy hamlet. But it wasn't long before the view outside the window of her parlor was shocking. WWI was down below. The book is smallish at 4-1/4" x 7" with 188 pages including some black and white photographs. The book is a series of letters sent back to America. A nice little gift to a history buff. the book is clean and tightly bound with just a very small bit of wear.

The War With Germany; A Statistical Summary (SIGNED, 1919), Ayres, Leonard P.
16 Ayres, Leonard P. The War With Germany; A Statistical Summary (SIGNED, 1919)
Wshington D.C. Government Printing Office 1919 Revised Edition Hard cover Good
This is a very interesting statistical overview of WWI revised to August 1, 1919. It's also signed and inscribed by the author who was also a military colonel. The original's owner's name is readable, but another owner drew a line through it and added his name on top. The book is clean and tightly bound, but it does have one defect (see photo). There are two parallel tears at the bottom of one page and the paper between them turned into an accordion. I've seen this before, bu I cn't imgine what happened. Anyway, I ironed it flt, used archival tape to mend the tears and put it i8n the book press. It's now totally flat, but the tiny ladder of creases is still visible. The book has many graphics to show the numbers of such topics as the four million men; the six month training requirement; transportation for 10,000 men per day; food, clothing and equipment; weapons; airplanes, motors and balloons; 200 days of battle; health and casualties; the cost of a million dollars an hour; and international comparisons. Overall good with some wear to extremities and a little fraying at top and bottom of spine. Measures 6" x 9-1/2" and has 154 pages. God WWI collectible.

Solon, Ohio Eagle Creek Press 2006 0975936611 / 9780975936610 Presumed First Card cover Very good condition
Very nice clean booklet of 81 pages which measure 7" x 10" and are illustrated throughout with black and white photographs. The text begins with the return of the doughboys from WWI; Newton D. Baker's Baby (the college);Crisis; Postwar Renaissance; Confusion; More Crisis; the Lecture Series and more. The best part to me is the history of the annual Case book sale. I have been going to it for 20 years and many items both on this site and my book site came from the huge Case sale. I only missed the opening day once and that because I tore my rotor cuff the day before, but I was there on half price day with one arm in a sling and a husband who piled books, packed books, checked out books and hauled boxes of books to the car! book has no names or writing and is clean and tightly bound.

The Second Liberty Loan WWI 1917 (McAdoo speech, explanation, and application), McAdoo, Honorable W.G.
20 McAdoo, Honorable W.G. The Second Liberty Loan WWI 1917 (McAdoo speech, explanation, and application)
Washington D.C. Government Printing Office 1917 soft cover Good condition
There were many items published to convince citizens to buy Second Liberty Bonds to finance WWI. I have one advertising piece here in color which is graphically appealing. The other three items are plain janes, but they're also the nuts and bolts that got the job done. First off we have a booklet titled "The Second Liberty Loan and the Causes of Our War with Germany" given as a speech by the Honorable W. G. McAdoo which was delivered at the annual convention of the American Bankers' Association in Atlantic City on September 20, 1917. McAdoo was Woodrow Wilson's Secretary of the Treasury and it was up to him to explain how the idea worked as a partial investment combined with taxes. The three billion dollar offer was open for only six weeks and was done by November 15, 1917. The booklet contains 16 seriously dense pages. In addition to that is a larger four page explanation of all the ins and outs for those who wanted in. It shows one small circular stain to last page. The third item is the application to invest. The application had once been pasted in a scrapbook, but I was able to remove the adhered paper leaving just a few small stains from the glue. The whole is not commonly found. (BUS.)
