Fortune Magazine July, 1935 (Anheiser-Busch, Women In Business, Restoring Williamsburg, U.S. Smelting & Refining)
2 Fortune Magazine July, 1935 (Anheiser-Busch, Women In Business, Restoring Williamsburg, U.S. Smelting & Refining)
New York Time-Life 1935 Volume XII, No. 1 soft cover Very good
Very clean, nice issue of one of the star magazines of the 30's. The photography is excellent, as are the articles and the magazine's design. Three topics grabbed my attention -- a colorful piece about Anheiser-Busch and its bottled beer, Part I of a story about women in business, and a look at Mr. Rockefeller's renovation of colonial Willamsburg. There's also a piece about the cotton industry, one on U.S. Smelting & Refining and a profile of Harry Hopkins. Magazine has no real defect of note. It measures 11-1/2"x14" and has 140 pages. OVERSEAS ORDERS WELCOME, but shipping may be higher than stated due to size. Contact me with destination for actual quote.

Postcard St. John's Altar Hampton, Virginia
4 Postcard St. John's Altar Hampton, Virginia
Baltimore, Maryland Louis Kaufman & Sons Unknown date Very Good
Very stunning church interior with emphasis on the altar area. The church's parish originally belonged to the oldest settlement in the United States. The present church as seen here was the third in the parish and was built in 1728. The town of Hampton suffered a serious fire in which the church burned on August 7, 1861. Fortunately, it was restored in 1868. The card has not been used and is very clean. The corners are light bumped, but overall it's a beauty and will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve.

Sullins College Bulletin Bristol, Virginia 1968-1969
5 Sullins College Bulletin Bristol, Virginia 1968-1969
Bristol, Virignia Sullins College 1968 Vol.68, No. 1 Card cover Very good condition
This Virginia College for girls began as a high school for girls. But in 1870 it became a junior college under the guidance of the Methodist church. It burned in December 1915 after which the church did not choose to rebuild. It's a long story but the school did reopen and remained so until 1976. What's interesting about this bulletin is the fact that it was published at the time the school reached its highest enrollment. But right after that it again dropped off. There are interesting pictures here -- math class and physics amidst the usual fare for women. Bulletin measures 5-3/4" x 9" and has 90 pages. Very clean and tightly bound with no spine crease and no names or writing

The Murder of George Wythe (Colonial Virginia Published 1955)
7 The Murder of George Wythe (Colonial Virginia Published 1955)
Williamsburg, Virginia The Institute of Early American History and Culture 1955 card cover Very good
Very nice clean booklet which tells a fascinating tale. George Whythe may not be a household name, but he was a big deal in colonial America -- first American law professor, abolitionist, noted classics scholar, Virginia judge, and the first of the seven Virginia signers of the United States Declaration of Independence. He also served as representative in the Continental Congress and at the Constitutional Convention.AND he taught and mentored to Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall, and Henry Clay. So when he turned up murdered it was no small mater. The booklet solves the case with 64 detailed pages. It measures 6"x9" and is very clean and attractive. Contains two essays, "The Murder of George Wythe" by Julian P, Boyd and "Examinations of George Wythe Swinney for Forgery and Murder" by W. Edwin Hempill.

The Wigmaker in Eighteenth-Century Williamsburg
8 The Wigmaker in Eighteenth-Century Williamsburg
Williamsburg, Virginia Colonial Willamsburg 1965 soft cover Very Good
This is a decidedly fascinating little booklet which offers a tremendous amount of information, including drawings of equipment of the trade and the many styles available. The text covers the work of the wigmaker of course, but also the history of the trade, the Williamsburg wig shops, the colonial era clientele, the making of a wig, the prices, the role of barbers. Here's a fascinating fact -- in 1727 a French encyclopedia stated that there were 45 styles of wigs. In 1764 it had grown to 115. Booklet measures 6"x9-1/2" and has36 pages.

Three Postcards Natural Bridge Virginia
9 Three Postcards Natural Bridge Virginia
Two Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Tree, Frederick, Maryland Two by E.C. Kropp; Tree by Bielfeld Inc. circa 1950's-60's Fine condition
Beautiful, color-saturated cards. The one depicting the huge tree is from a different publisher than the other two, so there is a slight difference in margin and back coloration. The tree is an arbor vitae estimated to be 1000 years old. There is also one showing the Lace Water Falls and one of the natural bridge itself, all from the Natural Bridge area in Virginia. None of the cards have been postally used, but one has a name in the address box, but no other writing. All are bright and crisp with sharp corners. Each will arrive in its own plastic sleeve.

Virginia First in the Heart of the Nation Magazine 1931
12 Virginia First in the Heart of the Nation Magazine 1931
Richmond, Virginia Virginia State Chamber of Commerce 1931 Volume VI, number 1 soft cover Good-plus
This a large magazine published by the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce to tout the glories of the state in hope of encouraging tourists. There's no articles -- just montages of black and white photographs designed to encourage the reader to book a trip. The magazine measures 10"x13" and is very clean with the exception of the margin at lower corner of back cover. I did gently clean it, but it's a delicate process, so I didn't get too aggressive. There is also a short tear to the bottom of the spine, but that was easy to repair with non-browning, almost invisible archival tape. I love the cover. It reminds me of The Music Man and the dancing girls -- "one Grecian urn, two Grecian urns!" 21 beautiful pages.

Huge map measuring 18"x31" when completely unfolded, but folds down back down to a handy 5"x8". The map is quite nice on both sides, as one of the reverse section shows small photographs of Virginia's attractions. There are no tears or writing. The only fault is a few light spots of toning to cover. Overall, quite nice.

Yorktown, As I Remember (Virginia, 1981), O'Hara. Lucy Hudgins
20 O'Hara. Lucy Hudgins Yorktown, As I Remember (Virginia, 1981)
Verona, Virginia McClure 1981 Presumed first edition hard cover Fine condition Fine dustjacket
This is a booklet in hard cover containing 78 pages including the index. It's clean and bright with no bumps, no names or writing, and no tears or chips to jacket. The booklet measures 6-1/4" x 9-1/4" and is very clean and nice. The dustjacket is protected by brand new mylar cover. The book is a lovely reminiscence of life in Yorktown, Virginia begining at the turn of the century of which there are many large, full page black and white photographs. Though the booklet's true stories and memories are interesting, the genealogical facet would be especially important to O'Haras, Hudgins, and Powells, especially in Virginia. Her father was Theophilus Trimyer Hudgins and her mother Malvina Powell Hudgins. Her husband was Leslie Richard O'Hara. Lucy also looks back at her ancestors and tells their stories, including the fact that they were slave owners. For the right person this is gem.
