15 Postcards Views of Monticello
1 15 Postcards Views of Monticello
Virginia Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Inc. Unknown Near Fine
Beautiful glossy set of 15 postcards, each showing a different aspect of Monticello, the exquisite Charlottesville, Virginia home of President Thomas Jefferson. The cards are slightly oversized at 4" high and 6-1/4" across. None have been used. All are nicely kept with sharp corners. Only fault is light toning around the edges of the reverse sides. 24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
2 24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
U.S.A. American Preservation Unknown date Unknown edition Disbound Articles Very Good Condition
I found these disbound articles in a box of Architectual Review Magazines which I bought at auction. I almost tossed them out until I realized how worthy they are. Each of the 24 focuses on a particular area within a state located anywhere in the country. They all derived from American Preservation magazine, so the color photographs are stunning. Each article is pretty long with many images. I wish I had more room to show them. Areas are these: New Orleans Lower Garden District; Providence, Rhode Island; Salem Massachusetts; Eutaw, Alabama's Greek Revival Architecture; Galveston, Texas; Mizner's Eden Palm Beach's Flamboyant Architecture; Brownsville, Texas; Waterford, Virginia; Helena, Montana; Columbus, Georgia; Madison, Indiana; Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Key West, Florida; Jacksonville, Oregon; Mt. Auburn in Cincinnati, Ohio; Manchester area of Pittsburgh; Savannah, Georgia; Powelton Village, Philadelphia; Saratoga Springs, New York; Crested Butte in the Rocky Mts.; Detroit's Woodward East; Oakland cemetery; Galena, Illinois and Bay View, A Summer Resort in Michigan. All are clean and stapled. Will still ship for $2 media in the U.S. as always.

30 Postcards G. F. Castleden New Orleans Sketches (1924-1929)
3 30 Postcards G. F. Castleden New Orleans Sketches (1924-1929)
New Orlean, LA G.F. Castleden 1924-1929 Fine in Very Good Envelopes
These are a lovely find if you are enchanted by the architecture of New Orleans. I've never seen this many in one place ever, but I got them from the estate of a Castleden collector. Castleden was a British artist who emigrated to New Orleans and continued his career as an artist there. The cards were aimed at the tourist trade -- ten scenes for a quarter. Three of the original envelopes will accompany them, but the cards weren't in them, so I am uncertain which belong where. The scenes are Old World beautiful and include, but are not confined to, these subjects: Pirate Alley, the monastery of the Capuchian monks, the staircase of the old St. Louis Hotel, the courtyard of the old Spanish Arsenal, oyster schooners, the Spanish Gate of Cabildo, the Courtyard of the Little Theatre, and the Little Green Shutter Tea Room. None have been used and all are in excellent condition. The envelopes are a little worn, but not bad. The photo shows an array of cards, but not all -- there really are thirty!

5 A New Generation Looks at Downtown Housing in Cleveland (1983)
Cleveland, Ohio Architects Society of Ohio. Cleveland Chaper American Institute of Architects 1983 Card cover Very good condition
Downtown Cleveland is the coolest place to live these days, but in 1983 when this study came out the suburbs ruled. The Architects Society of Ohio and the Cleveland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects challenged Ohio's college students at the University of Cincinnati, Kent State, Miami, and Ohio State to participate in a student design seminar. This booklet is the result. As you can see it's bound with a metal spiral and is clean and nice. Measures 8" x 10-1/2" and has 22 pages. Illustrated with colorful graphics, small photographs and architectual drawings. Not often seen.

A Plan For Historic Preservation Charlestown, Massachusetts 1968
6 A Plan For Historic Preservation Charlestown, Massachusetts 1968
Charlestown, Massachusetts Charlestown Preservation Society Inc. 1968 Very Good Soft Cover Good-plus
I very much like old urban planning/historical preservation items, so of course had to have this one. It was likely printed for the exclusive use of the Charlestown Preservation Society, so there aren't too many kicking around. The booklet is clean and oversized at 9"x11" and spiral bound to lie flat. The plastic comb is completely intact. It's illustrated throughout with maps and black and white photographs. A very interesting retrospective of the town.

A Study for the Exchange Hotel Sandusky, Ohio (1980)
7 A Study for the Exchange Hotel Sandusky, Ohio (1980)
Cleveland, Ohio Dalton, van Dijk, Johnson & Partners, Architects 1980 Card cover, spiral binding Very good condition
Very nice clean, tightly bound, document bound with a plastic spiral which is still holding well. Booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" with 24 pages and both diagrams and photographs. The Exchange Hotel was the oldest standing brick structure at the time of the rennovation. it had deteriorated quite a bit after it became a rooming house and a reestaurant/night club. In July of 1977 a raging fire damaged it extensively. It's a very interesting report sprinkled with anecdotes such as Charles Dickens once checked in!

Howell, Michigan is known for its beautiful residential architecture -- many lovely vintage homes, enough to fill seven different walking tours. The booklet is illustrated with small drawings and offers information of each home or building -- its design, date, ownership etc.. Booklet measures 5-1/2" x 8" and has 103 pages including index. Booklet is spiral bound and is quite nice with the exception of a few small tears to bottom of spiral which I repaired with small pieces of archival tape. The guide has no names or writing and is very clean.

Architecture and Construction in Cincinnati: A Guide to Building Designers and Builders (Volume One, 1987)
9 Architecture and Construction in Cincinnati: A Guide to Building Designers and Builders (Volume One, 1987)
Cincinnati, Ohio Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati 1987 First Edition Card cover Very good condition
I love the way this guide mimics the skyscrapers which bracket the two tall buildings on the cover. The book itself is tall and narrow and measures 4" x 9" with 195 pages. In addition to all types of architecture there are six tours you can take in the city, plus one in nearby Kentucky, another at Mariemont and one featuring sculptures and other art. The guide is wonderful with many black and white photos.

Atkins Saws In The Home & Atkins Silver Steel Dado Heads (Vintage Advertising Brochures from E.C. Atkins & Company)
10 Atkins Saws In The Home & Atkins Silver Steel Dado Heads (Vintage Advertising Brochures from E.C. Atkins & Company)
Indianapolis Atkins Saw Company No date
Though some would argue that Diston Saws, made in Philadelphia, were the finest handtools of the 19th and early 20th centuries, others would rank products made by the E.C. Atkins Co. of Indianapolis right up there with the best of them. This wonderful brochure entitled Atkins Saws in the Home gets the point across with both its cover graphic of a smiling man using a hand saw and this snappy copy: "Mr. Happy Man says a saw that 'chews' may cost less but the saw to choose is an Atkins. The Finest On Earth." Though the trifold brochure is undated, it appears to be from the 20's or 30's. It measures 4x9" folded, 12" by 9" when opened and 12x18" when extended to full size. The graphics of the full extended page are fabulous --wonderful images of the various saws produced by the company in black and white against a light grey background banded in the same blue as front cover.Copy includes Hints for the Home Workshop, Useful Facts & Figures, How To Care For A Good Saw, plus info on the company and its motto -- "For the man who does things." We will also include a smaller brochure advertising Atkins Silver Steel Dado Heads booklet printed with the name Waco Tool Works of Chicago. This, too, is a trifold, but measures just 3-1/2" x6" closed. Both are in very good condition with just a small bit of soiling to outer fold of larger brochure and a speck of paper loss at a couple corners when fully extending (see photo). Goof gift for an antique tool collector.

11 Beaubourg 1977-1987: Les Dix Primieres Annees Du Centre Georges Pompidou (Beaux Art Magazine, 1987)
France Beaux Arts 1987 Card cover Cery good Condition
Wow! What a fun magazine for the arts. I bought it at a small shop which mostly sold popular fiction. I looked around, saw nothing of interest and almost went out the door just as my eye caught this beauty. The only thing that would make it better would be both in English and French text. As it is, it's completely in French and yet you can get the drift of it anyway. Lots of color pages and many types of arts and artists. Topics cover architecture, poetry, history. Jasper Johns, Magritte, Matisse, Dance, Concerts, Pollock, Man Ray, photography, Manet, De Kooning, Post-Modernism, Sculpture, Collage, and more. The mgzine measures 8-3.4" x 11" and has 130 pages.

Bermuda The Garden Club of Bermuda 1973 Second edition Card Cover Good-plus
This is an oversized booklet measuring 9" x 12" with 81 clean, tightly bound pages. The only faults are some toning to a few areas of the white back cover and former owner's name and address in upper front corner of first page. The booklet is lavishly illustrated with black and white photographs of the interiors and exteriors of some of the island's most stunning residences at the time of writing, many of which were already 300 years old! Very handsomely presented on quality coated paper.

Build Beauty, Economy, Permanence into your Home with Curtis Woodwork (1944)
13 Build Beauty, Economy, Permanence into your Home with Curtis Woodwork (1944)
Clinton. Iowa Curtis Woodwork 1944 Soft Cover Fine Condition
I love when a nice ephemera item is hiding extras on the same subject. I bought the main booklet and -- surprise! -- I got two extra small booklets about kitchens and entrances and a letter from the company. Home builders knew that after the war there would be many people, especially veterans, yearning for a home of their own. The building trade started early to feed the pent-up desire, but by the time this advertising came out the end of the war was only a year away -- 1945. The yellow pamphlets measures 3-1/2" x 6-1/4". The large booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 15 pages covering windows, exterior doors, interior doors, built-in china cabinets, stairways, fireplace mantels, and kitchen cupboards. All items mentioned are included.

14 Chapelle Du Rosaire of the Dominican Nuns of Vence
Vence, France No publisher stated 1996 Card cover Fine condition
Not long ago I saw a documentary about the beautiful windows designed by Matisse for the chapel of a nunnery in France. So when I saw this booklet about it I had to have it. Matisse considered this project his master work and indeed it is. The booklet is gorgeous, printed on quality coated paper with bright, beautiful photography accompanied by description. It measures 7-1/4" x 10" and is as new. I doubt it was ever read. Would make a lovely gift.

Detroit Cultural Center (Design Prototypes 1960's)
16 Detroit Cultural Center (Design Prototypes 1960's)
Detroit, Michigan Urban Design Division of Detroit City Plan Commission No date, but circa 1960's soft cover Good condition
A spectacular design book which is not often seen. The condition shows some exterior glitches -- edge wear in spots, a chip to outer paper at outer edge of back cover and two corner creases, also at back. One is superficial, the other I have sustained with non-browning archival tape on the reverse side. This is a large book measuring 12" square with a sturdy wire binding. There is no date, but there was an easy clue in plain sight. The mayor listed inside was Jerome P. Cavanaugh who left office in 1969. Prototypes re for Includes prototype designs for the Institute of Arts, Hall of Man, Museum of Science and Technology, Planetarium, Center for the Musical and Theater Arts, and Gardens.

Frank Lloyd Wright A Modern Aesthetic June 6 to July 15, 1986 (The Darwin D. Martin House)
19 Frank Lloyd Wright A Modern Aesthetic June 6 to July 15, 1986 (The Darwin D. Martin House)
Chicago, Illinois Struve Gallery 1986 card cover Very Good Condition
This is a beautiful catalog in very good condition. It should, however, have a white paper dustwrapper printed with the exact design on the cover of the booklet itself. It's still very attractive with no defect of note. The Darwin D. Marvin house was built in Buffalo, New York in 1903-1904 and was considered the house that truly showed Wright's genius. Wright was friends with the owners until the death of Darwin Martin in 1935. Until then he designed furniture, lighting fixtures and even dresses for Mrs. Martin. He also consulted on the couple's collection of Japanese prints and ceramics. This booklet measures 8" x 11" and is illustrated handsomely with photos of the stained glass windows and the furniture.
