A Seidel For Jake Wirth Jacob Wirth Co. German Restaurant (Boston, 1964)
1 A Seidel For Jake Wirth Jacob Wirth Co. German Restaurant (Boston, 1964)
Boston Stinehour Press 1964 soft cover Near fine
The Jacob Wirth German Restaurant opened its doors in Boston in 1949. This booklet was published in 1964 as a tribute. A seidel is a lidded tankard of beer, so this is a toast to good food and good times raised by a list of people who loved it. In addition to the restaurant the Jacob Wirth Company was also a wholesaler of Rhine wine and domestic and imported beers. The booklet measures 6"x9" and has 45 pages of history and stories as well as black and white photographs and a menu at the back.

Canadian National Railways Menu September 6,1939
2 Canadian National Railways Menu September 6,1939
Canada Canadian National Railways 1939 card cover Very Good
Very handsome 1939 menu for passengers on the Canadian National Railway September 6, 1939. This was a banner year for Canada with the arrival of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth who in May of '39 took a Royal Tour of the country stopping at both small towns and large cities to the delight of fervent crowds. To celebrate the Royal Tour the two Canadian railways -- the Canadian National and the Canadian Pacific --each worked hard to outdo the other in providing half the cars for the Royal Train. Of course by the time this menu was printed the hoopla was all over, but the cover shows The National Monument at Ottawa which was unveiled for the King and Queen on May 18th, 1939. A very nice addition to the menu, Candiana, railroadiana, or travel collection. Measures 6-1/2"x9-1/2" and is printed on heavy card. The left side is in English and the right in French.

Chinese Travel Ephemera: Quantude Restaurant Advertising, Boarding Card, Shanghai Antique & Curio Store
3 Chinese Travel Ephemera: Quantude Restaurant Advertising, Boarding Card, Shanghai Antique & Curio Store
China Quanjude Group; /China International Travel Service 2004 Card cover Fine condition for all
I just found this array of fun things in a travel collection I bought a couple years ago. Everything was in the envelope with the restaurant advertising. The envelope, the card, and business card came from the China Quanjude Group which introduced the roast duck seen in the photo in 1864, during the third year of Tongzhi, Quing Dynasty. There's also a Boarding Card from the China International Travel Service, a small advertising card which lists the Chinese Dyanasties and the items which can be bought at the store, and lastly, two very attractive Chinese characters on beautiful paper. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Fred Harvey Restaurant Menu 1945 (Aid to Military Ribbon Identification)
4 Fred Harvey Restaurant Menu 1945 (Aid to Military Ribbon Identification)
Kansas Fred Harvey Restaurants 1945 card cover Very good
Fred Harvey was a restaurant phenomenon. On this menu it sums up his amazing growth with this line, "from Cleveland to the Pacific coast." This particular menu was printed for the restaurant located in Union Station, Los Angeles and dated Monday, May 28, 1945. In addition to the patriotic cover it's interesting to see how much food has changed in America. Of course the prices are give-away by today's standards -- imagine a cocktail for 35 cents -- but you would rarely see such offerings as what Fred Harvey was serving up for lunch in '45. How about some braised smoked beef tongue with noodles and raisin sauce? Or maybe "our own baked beans with salt pork"? Nice collectible.

Menu Landmark Inn(Chinese Cuisine, 1974)
6 Menu Landmark Inn(Chinese Cuisine, 1974)
No location stated Landmark Inn 1974 Card cover Very Good Condition
I've had this menu for awhile and tried many times to determine its origin, but I, still don't know. You would think that because they served an extensive list of Chinese food would have helped, but it didn't. The only clue I found was a message inside from "Danny" who took a page to enitce diners with the various types of Chinese cuisine --Mandarin, Hunan, Cantonese etc. The only reason I even know the date is because a previous owner wrote it (1974) on one of the pages. The restaurant created a showy full-page list of cocktails in addition to seven pages of entrees, appetizers and desserts. The menu measures 10" x 13" and is handsomely tied with cold cording and tassels.

Murray Hill Taxis Ltd. Operating Montreal Tours
7 Murray Hill Taxis Ltd. Operating Montreal Tours
Montreal, Canada Canadian Tourist Association No date circa 1940's soft cover Good condition
This travel guide has it all -- great hotels, restaurants, things to do, things to buy. It measures 7" x 8" and has 25 counted pages with brown printing and sepia photographs. It was tricky to figure out the date, but after several tries I got it -- a photo of Countess Nicol and her son (see photo) did it. The Countess and Count were Little People -- I remembered seeing that picture somewhere else. It was supposed to have been in the 1940's. I think that's about right because the fashions are 30's-40's and there is very nice photo of a tour bus.

8 Postcard Fred Harvey's Lunch Room Union Station, Chicago (1920's)
Fred Harvey 1920's Very Good Condition
This card is unused, so no dates written by sender and no post mark. The only clue to find a date here is the pink cloche hat on the lady in the foreground next to the two men. The cloche hat is a Roaring Twenties fashion favorite. Fred Harvey was the restaurant king of his day. This one was beautiful and located in the Chicago train station. Card is clean and nice and will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve.

9 Postcard Porch Dining Room Summit Hotel, Uniontown, PA
Mil;aukee, Wisconsin E.C. Kropp Co. Unknown Very good
This is very pretty card which also tells much about the Summit Hotel on the reverse side. It was open only from April through November and offered its guests golf, tennis, saddle horses, miniature golf, dancing and "moving pictures." There were 100 rooms with running hot and cold water, steam heat, private baths and telephone. Among the celebrities who stayed there are President and Mrs. Harding, General Pershing, Thomas Edison, Henry and Edsel Ford, Cornelius and Reginald Vanderbilt and John Burroughs, author of many books on natural history. Card is clean and attractive with just a tiny spot at corner of stamp box. Has not been postally used and there is no writing. Card will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve.

Postcards New Orleans Spanish Arch Patio, Brulatour Courtyard, Broussard's Restaurant (1939-40's)
11 Postcards New Orleans Spanish Arch Patio, Brulatour Courtyard, Broussard's Restaurant (1939-40's)
New Orleans, LA A. Hirschwitz; New Orleans News 1939-1940's Very Good condition
Three colorful, crisp linen postcards each showing a different New Orleans scene. The one featuring Broussard's Paradise Courtyard Restaurant is the most interesting not only because it has a dated postmark for 1939, but because it was hand written by J.C. Broussard who was engaged in a little marketing. The message reads "While in N.O. enjoy a delicious French meal at Broussard's famous reastaurant. J.C. Broussard." It was sent to Miss Harriet Stone of Wooster, Ohio. The other two cards (Spanish Arch Patio and Brulatour Courtyard) are likewise nice -- one has not been used, the other shows attempted use with just an address. That one was to have gone to Colene Spencer of Toledo, Ohio. These are more likely to be from the 40s's. EACH CARD WILL ARRIVE IN BRAND NEW PLASTIC SLEEVE.

Spain Travel Brochure
12 Spain Travel Brochure
Madrid, Spain Ministerio De Informacion Y Turismo No date soft cover Very good condition
This is a very attractive travel brochure which shows off the many faces of Spain. There is no date and I could find no clues that would have at least dated it by decade. It's fairly contemporary -- from the 80's to the early 2000s. There's much to read about hotels, restaurants, museums, beauty sites, shopping, sports, festivals and other fun things. The brochure closes up to a handy 4-3/4" x 9-1/2 and opens to twice as big. Other than a few small isolated edge wear, the brochure is lovely. TEXT IS IN ENGLISH.

Toffenetti Restaurant Times Square Postcard (1951)
13 Toffenetti Restaurant Times Square Postcard (1951)
New York Lumitone Photoprint 1951 Very good
Fun souvenir postcard clearly purchased by a tourist who wrote on the back, "Ate here after South Pacific 12 o'clock June 7, 1951." Toffenetti's "the cathedral of all restaurants" was started by an Italian immigrant named Dario Toffannetti. He opened his first place in 1914 and this huge THOUSAND seat eatery in 1940 at 43rd Street and Broadway on New York's Times Square. The menu consisted of both American and European food, plain and inexpensive, and Toffenetti's was open 24 hours a day! Postcard was not postally used and is clean and bright with a semi-glossy finish. Only fault is a few spots of very light foxing at back. Will arrive in plastic sleeve.

Bellemont, Arizona Canyonlands Publication 2000 0970259506 / 9780970259509 First printing stated Card cover Fine, as new
Not only is this booklet crisp and clean, it also has the bag it came in which retains the name of Fred Harvey. Harvey was an English immigrant who saw an opportunity to launch a business and provide travelers with quality hotels and restaurants. Prior to this, travelers who took a train west had no reliable places to stay or eat. The booklet has many photographs and an interesting text. It measures 6" x 9" and has 30 pages.

The Golden Lamb (Ohio's Oldest Hotel) 1968, Phillips, Hazel Spencer
15 Phillips, Hazel Spencer The Golden Lamb (Ohio's Oldest Hotel) 1968
Oxford, Ohio Oxford 1968 7th printing Hard cover Fine, as New
I've sold several of these over the years, but never one in such perfect condition. Gorgeous is the word, so I added a mylar cover to keep it that way. The Golden Lamb in Lebanon Ohio is a storied place, its history, it's good times in a charming environment, and for some, even ghost stories. I'm not sure if the latter is in the book, but I read some first person "eeries" a couple years ago in the Medina Gazette which of course adds greatly to the fun, even though not everyone believes it.The book measures 6"x 8" and has 59 pages replete with facsimile documents and black and white photographs. The only defect is a gift inscription on the back of the front free endpaper. I actually like these because they become part of the booklet's history. "This one reads "To Mamie, About one of your favorite places. Lovingly, Your daughter, Agnes. August 16, 1970."
