30 Postcards G. F. Castleden New Orleans Sketches (1924-1929)
1 30 Postcards G. F. Castleden New Orleans Sketches (1924-1929)
New Orlean, LA G.F. Castleden 1924-1929 Fine in Very Good Envelopes
These are a lovely find if you are enchanted by the architecture of New Orleans. I've never seen this many in one place ever, but I got them from the estate of a Castleden collector. Castleden was a British artist who emigrated to New Orleans and continued his career as an artist there. The cards were aimed at the tourist trade -- ten scenes for a quarter. Three of the original envelopes will accompany them, but the cards weren't in them, so I am uncertain which belong where. The scenes are Old World beautiful and include, but are not confined to, these subjects: Pirate Alley, the monastery of the Capuchian monks, the staircase of the old St. Louis Hotel, the courtyard of the old Spanish Arsenal, oyster schooners, the Spanish Gate of Cabildo, the Courtyard of the Little Theatre, and the Little Green Shutter Tea Room. None have been used and all are in excellent condition. The envelopes are a little worn, but not bad. The photo shows an array of cards, but not all -- there really are thirty!

Menu The Court of Two Sisters, New Orleans 1966
4 Menu The Court of Two Sisters, New Orleans 1966
New Orleans The Court of Two sisters 1966 Card cover Fine condition
This is the prettiest menu cover for dining in a New Orleans courtyard. It catches both the ambiance and the restaurant noted for its mint juleps. In fact, it was those mint juleps that gave me the date of this menu -- in a way. Back then a mint julep cost considerably more than a martini which was 95 cents, so I thought I'd see when martinis were this price. As luck would have it the article I found was about martinis vs. juleps at Sisters -- and THERE was the answer! The menu is lengthy, bright and clean. It measures 9-3/4" x 12-3/4".

Postcards New Orleans Spanish Arch Patio, Brulatour Courtyard, Broussard's Restaurant (1939-40's)
6 Postcards New Orleans Spanish Arch Patio, Brulatour Courtyard, Broussard's Restaurant (1939-40's)
New Orleans, LA A. Hirschwitz; New Orleans News 1939-1940's Very Good condition
Three colorful, crisp linen postcards each showing a different New Orleans scene. The one featuring Broussard's Paradise Courtyard Restaurant is the most interesting not only because it has a dated postmark for 1939, but because it was hand written by J.C. Broussard who was engaged in a little marketing. The message reads "While in N.O. enjoy a delicious French meal at Broussard's famous reastaurant. J.C. Broussard." It was sent to Miss Harriet Stone of Wooster, Ohio. The other two cards (Spanish Arch Patio and Brulatour Courtyard) are likewise nice -- one has not been used, the other shows attempted use with just an address. That one was to have gone to Colene Spencer of Toledo, Ohio. These are more likely to be from the 40s's. EACH CARD WILL ARRIVE IN BRAND NEW PLASTIC SLEEVE.

7 Postcards: Courtyards of New Orleans Old French Courtyard. Courtyard Louisiana State Museum
Boston, New Orleans Tichnor. New Orleans News Co. Circa 1946 Very good condition
The rounded doors and courtyards of New Orleans make very pretty postcards. These two are very clean. The one with the yellow doors shows the Louisiana State Museum in New Orleans. It has not been used. The date I affixed to the pair is the result of the second card which shows Old French Courtyard, New Orleans. That one was sent to a Mrs. M.C. Binkley of Washington, D.C. and postmarked on April 7, 1956. Both cards will arrive in its own brand new plastic sleeve.

Gombo Zhebes: Little Dictionary of Creole Proverbs Selected From Six Creole Dialects, Hearn, Lafcadio
8 Hearn, Lafcadio Gombo Zhebes: Little Dictionary of Creole Proverbs Selected From Six Creole Dialects
New York Stated Will H. Coleman Reprint Hard cover Fine condition
This booklet is marked as though it were the original published by Will H. Coleman. It's even dated 1885, but everything about this book is contemporary. Nonetheless it's an interesting one if you are interested in New Orleans and especially the Creole language and culture. The booklet measures 6-1/4" x 9-1/4" with 42 pages including index. Book is presented in both English and Creole. The author, Lafcadio Hearn was Irish, but worked in New Orleans as a newspaper reporter and then migrated to Ohio. Eventually he moved to Japan, married a Japanese woman, had children and wrote many books about Japan. This book is quite good because it also offers notes in English about the meanings and origins of the proverbs. Beautiful condition too.
