24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
1 24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
U.S.A. American Preservation Unknown date Unknown edition Disbound Articles Very Good Condition
I found these disbound articles in a box of Architectual Review Magazines which I bought at auction. I almost tossed them out until I realized how worthy they are. Each of the 24 focuses on a particular area within a state located anywhere in the country. They all derived from American Preservation magazine, so the color photographs are stunning. Each article is pretty long with many images. I wish I had more room to show them. Areas are these: New Orleans Lower Garden District; Providence, Rhode Island; Salem Massachusetts; Eutaw, Alabama's Greek Revival Architecture; Galveston, Texas; Mizner's Eden Palm Beach's Flamboyant Architecture; Brownsville, Texas; Waterford, Virginia; Helena, Montana; Columbus, Georgia; Madison, Indiana; Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Key West, Florida; Jacksonville, Oregon; Mt. Auburn in Cincinnati, Ohio; Manchester area of Pittsburgh; Savannah, Georgia; Powelton Village, Philadelphia; Saratoga Springs, New York; Crested Butte in the Rocky Mts.; Detroit's Woodward East; Oakland cemetery; Galena, Illinois and Bay View, A Summer Resort in Michigan. All are clean and stapled. Will still ship for $2 media in the U.S. as always.

2 Glimpses of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and City of St. Louis. 1904
Chicago Laird and Lee Publishers 1904 Hard cover Good condition
This souvenir book commemorates the Lousiana Exposition of 1904 with two hundred photos including 32 colorgraph views and 188 copperplate scenes. Every picture is full page with descriptions beneath. The book measures 5-1/2" x 6-3/4" and has clean and tightly bound pages. I cleaned the blue boards and improved them quite a bit, but there's still some small areas of stubborn soil. The original owner's name, F.J. Hall 1904, written with abandon on the title page. There is also a blank bookplate inside the back cover, but no name. (Entertainment Box 1)

Menu The Court of Two Sisters, New Orleans 1966
4 Menu The Court of Two Sisters, New Orleans 1966
New Orleans The Court of Two sisters 1966 Card cover Fine condition
This is the prettiest menu cover for dining in a New Orleans courtyard. It catches both the ambiance and the restaurant noted for its mint juleps. In fact, it was those mint juleps that gave me the date of this menu -- in a way. Back then a mint julep cost considerably more than a martini which was 95 cents, so I thought I'd see when martinis were this price. As luck would have it the article I found was about martinis vs. juleps at Sisters -- and THERE was the answer! The menu is lengthy, bright and clean. It measures 9-3/4" x 12-3/4".

Postcards New Orleans Spanish Arch Patio, Brulatour Courtyard, Broussard's Restaurant (1939-40's)
6 Postcards New Orleans Spanish Arch Patio, Brulatour Courtyard, Broussard's Restaurant (1939-40's)
New Orleans, LA A. Hirschwitz; New Orleans News 1939-1940's Very Good condition
Three colorful, crisp linen postcards each showing a different New Orleans scene. The one featuring Broussard's Paradise Courtyard Restaurant is the most interesting not only because it has a dated postmark for 1939, but because it was hand written by J.C. Broussard who was engaged in a little marketing. The message reads "While in N.O. enjoy a delicious French meal at Broussard's famous reastaurant. J.C. Broussard." It was sent to Miss Harriet Stone of Wooster, Ohio. The other two cards (Spanish Arch Patio and Brulatour Courtyard) are likewise nice -- one has not been used, the other shows attempted use with just an address. That one was to have gone to Colene Spencer of Toledo, Ohio. These are more likely to be from the 40s's. EACH CARD WILL ARRIVE IN BRAND NEW PLASTIC SLEEVE.

7 Postcards: Courtyards of New Orleans Old French Courtyard. Courtyard Louisiana State Museum
Boston, New Orleans Tichnor. New Orleans News Co. Circa 1946 Very good condition
The rounded doors and courtyards of New Orleans make very pretty postcards. These two are very clean. The one with the yellow doors shows the Louisiana State Museum in New Orleans. It has not been used. The date I affixed to the pair is the result of the second card which shows Old French Courtyard, New Orleans. That one was sent to a Mrs. M.C. Binkley of Washington, D.C. and postmarked on April 7, 1956. Both cards will arrive in its own brand new plastic sleeve.

Jackson's Famous Photographs of the St. Louis Exposition and
10 Brown, Charles Walter Jackson's Famous Photographs of the St. Louis Exposition and "The Pike"; Louisiana Purchase Exposition - Over 200 Views and Scenes 1803-1904
Chicago Metropolitan Syndicate Press 1904 Soft cover Good
The cover of this desirable booklet shows light freckling around the edges and a one inch loss of paper to the top of spine. The latter I covered with archival tape which doesn't brown and will keep the damage contained. The photographs are wonderful -- over 200 views and scenes. It says also on the front cover that there's to be a map too, but I don't have one. With the map and none of the problems mentioned it would have been twice the price. Booklet measures 5-1/4" x 7-1/4" and is clean and tightly bound. Among the highlights are palaces, pavilions for countries, animals, the Great Siberian Railway, rides, craft demonstrations, night time electric illumination and more.

Collier's Magazine January 22, 1954 (France, Leprosy in Louisiana, Korean Hell Camps), Buck, Pearl; Bradbury, Ray; Sheen, Fulton J.
11 Buck, Pearl; Bradbury, Ray; Sheen, Fulton J. Collier's Magazine January 22, 1954 (France, Leprosy in Louisiana, Korean Hell Camps)
Springfield, Ohio Crowell-Collier Publishing 1954 Volume 133, No. 2 soft cover Very Good Condition
The main story in this issue is The Mystery Man of the Pentagon which turns out to be Wilford James McNeil, comptroller of the Defense Department. But there's also stories about the survivors of the Korean "hell camps", Dr. Frederick A. Johansen and leprosy in Louisiana; the big problem in France best known as "The sick man of Europe"; The Crucifixion by Fulton J. Sheen; and a look at the cabin Dwight Eisenhower built for his golf vacations, though for some reason it's called Mamie's cabin. There are also two short stories by famous authors. Ray Bradbury has The Marriage Mender and Pearl Buck has Shield of Love. Magazine is clean and nice, though does show light foxing to back cover. Measures 10-1/2" x 13-1/2" and has 110 pages.

Gombo Zhebes: Little Dictionary of Creole Proverbs Selected From Six Creole Dialects, Hearn, Lafcadio
12 Hearn, Lafcadio Gombo Zhebes: Little Dictionary of Creole Proverbs Selected From Six Creole Dialects
New York Stated Will H. Coleman Reprint Hard cover Fine condition
This booklet is marked as though it were the original published by Will H. Coleman. It's even dated 1885, but everything about this book is contemporary. Nonetheless it's an interesting one if you are interested in New Orleans and especially the Creole language and culture. The booklet measures 6-1/4" x 9-1/4" with 42 pages including index. Book is presented in both English and Creole. The author, Lafcadio Hearn was Irish, but worked in New Orleans as a newspaper reporter and then migrated to Ohio. Eventually he moved to Japan, married a Japanese woman, had children and wrote many books about Japan. This book is quite good because it also offers notes in English about the meanings and origins of the proverbs. Beautiful condition too.

The Story of Spanish Moss and The Wax Tree Louisiana's Forgotten Product (Sample of Spanish Moss Laid-in), Martinez, Raymond J.; Holmes, Jack D.L.
14 Martinez, Raymond J.; Holmes, Jack D.L. The Story of Spanish Moss and The Wax Tree Louisiana's Forgotten Product (Sample of Spanish Moss Laid-in)
Jefferson, Louisiana Hope Publications No date stated Card cover Very good condition
I had one of these before, but it didn't have what this one has -- a sizable amount of Spanish moss inside a cello bag. It lays totally flat so can be inside without damage. The booklet has two authors -- Martinez wrote about the Spanish moss and Holmes about the forgotten Wax Tree. Very interesting and in nice condition. The only fault is faint foxing to the inside of the covers, front and back, and the next page of both. I took a photo of it, but it's really quite light. Booklet measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2 and has 31 pages.
