24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
1 24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
U.S.A. American Preservation Unknown date Unknown edition Disbound Articles Very Good Condition
I found these disbound articles in a box of Architectual Review Magazines which I bought at auction. I almost tossed them out until I realized how worthy they are. Each of the 24 focuses on a particular area within a state located anywhere in the country. They all derived from American Preservation magazine, so the color photographs are stunning. Each article is pretty long with many images. I wish I had more room to show them. Areas are these: New Orleans Lower Garden District; Providence, Rhode Island; Salem Massachusetts; Eutaw, Alabama's Greek Revival Architecture; Galveston, Texas; Mizner's Eden Palm Beach's Flamboyant Architecture; Brownsville, Texas; Waterford, Virginia; Helena, Montana; Columbus, Georgia; Madison, Indiana; Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Key West, Florida; Jacksonville, Oregon; Mt. Auburn in Cincinnati, Ohio; Manchester area of Pittsburgh; Savannah, Georgia; Powelton Village, Philadelphia; Saratoga Springs, New York; Crested Butte in the Rocky Mts.; Detroit's Woodward East; Oakland cemetery; Galena, Illinois and Bay View, A Summer Resort in Michigan. All are clean and stapled. Will still ship for $2 media in the U.S. as always.

Cabinet Card Little Girl with Flower Basket Sitting on Doorstep (Joshua Smith Studio, Chicago 1876-1886)
2 Cabinet Card Little Girl with Flower Basket Sitting on Doorstep (Joshua Smith Studio, Chicago 1876-1886)
Chicago Joshua Smith Studio Unknown Very good
Joshua Smith was no ordinary run-of-the-mill photographer who at this point in his career specialized in photographing children such as this cute little doorstep girl. In 1878 he won a coveted Silver Medal at the Paris Exhibition and in 1883 was elected president of the American Photographers Association. He also wrote many articles on chemicals and photography. There is no date on this photo, but research shows that the address on the back of it --206 North Clark Street, Chicago --was occupied by him from 1876-1886. The cabinet card is in sepia.

4 Chicago Grand Opera Company Program Season 1912-1913 (Prices and seating chart laid-in)
Chicago, Illinois Chicago Grand Opera Company 1912 soft cover Very good
This is an early program for the opera season of 1912-1913 held at the Auditorium Theatre of Chicago. Other than a few corner creases that I have pressed flat, the program is clean and bright with no names or writing. The current opera was Thais and the program includes its story, plus a list of others past and future, photos of opera stars, and lists of box holders and the nights they were to be present. As always, local ads abound, but these are quite graphically appealing. The program also includes a separate seating chart (see photo) with the various prices of seats. Program measures 7"x10" and has 32 pages.

Greetings From Chicago, Chicago Art Institute Black and White Postcard
7 Greetings From Chicago, Chicago Art Institute Black and White Postcard
Chicago, Illinois International Postal Card Company Fine
A beauty in black and white sent to our girl (I have MANY of her cards) Sophie Nundahl of Perry, North Dakota from Emil who says, "Thank you for the postal you sent me. With best wishes." Maybe Emil was in Chicago to visit the Art Institute which is pictured on the card and says this of itself, "Situated on Michigan Avenue at the head of Adams St. Contains many famous paintings and works of art." The card was not mailed and shows no date, but all the cards I have belonging to Sophie are from 1906 to 1914.

Indiana Limestone Sculpture Groups on the Michigan Avenue Bridge, Chicago Illinois 1928 (DuSable Bridge)
8 Indiana Limestone Sculpture Groups on the Michigan Avenue Bridge, Chicago Illinois 1928 (DuSable Bridge)
Chicago Indiana Limestone Company circa 1928 Good-plus soft cover Good-plus
This is a scarce item printed by the Indiana Limestone Company after the 1928 completion of the magnificent Michigan Avenue bridge in Chicago which is now known as the DuSable Bridge. The sculptures for which it is best known were commissioned by William Wrigley and there are four of them. James Earl Fraser was the sculptor for The Discovers which depicts La Salle and Marquette and also The Pioneers which show the early pioneers who settled the area that became Chicago. Henry Hering also provided two sculptures, Defense which features Captain Heald and the massacre of the Fort Dearborn garrison and Regeneration which depicts the regeneration of Chicago after the great fire of 1871. This items is designed accordion style. Closed it measures 8" x 11-1/4", but opens to 31" with printing on both sides. It's very clean and nice with just a light damp stain to bottom front edge only (does not appear at back) and a little toning to edges. Overall quite nice.

Life At the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago (Oversized Advertising Booklet in Original Envelope, 1930)
9 Life At the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago (Oversized Advertising Booklet in Original Envelope, 1930)
Chicago Moody Bible Institute 1930 Soft cover Fine in good envelope
Very seldom does old paper survive as splendidly as this oversized 1930 college booklet for the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago. It is in very fine condition and retains its own original mailing envelope on which former owner wrote her name. The envelope has some edge tears, but has protected the item wonderfully. Booklet is very handsome, printed on cream paper and measures 9x12-1/2." Photographs run in filmstrip form down the outer edges of each page, with the exception of portraits of staff and founder. There are 29 pages in all with much information about all aspects of life at the school, including such quirky things as the fact that in 1929 students consumed 9,420 dozen eggs! This one needs just the right home.

Morse Standard Power Transmission Products Catalog (1979)
10 Morse Standard Power Transmission Products Catalog (1979)
Aurora, Illinois Borg-Warner Corporation Morse Division 1979 SP-79 Card cover Very good condition
Hefty trade catalog which is 1" thick. I would have told you the number of pages, but there is different numbering throughout, as usual with the industrial catalogs. It shows some light wear, but overall it's tightly bound and the pages are clean. It measures 8-3/4" x 11". The Morse company sold roller chain, leaf and wrench chain, silent chain, hi-vo chain, flexible couplings, clutches and clutch couplings, torque limiters, bearings and rod ends, marine bearings, timing belt, SCR adjustable speed drives, shaft-mounts, and reducers. SHIPS in the U.S. for $2.

Official illustrated Guide Chicago Zoological Park (Brookfield, Illinois (1942)
11 Official illustrated Guide Chicago Zoological Park (Brookfield, Illinois (1942)
Brookfield, illinois The Chicago Zoological Society 1942 Card cover Very good condition
Very nice, clean visitors' guide to the zoo. The bright cover is an eye catcher, but the inside has many black and white photographs and 108 pages of info. There's also a wonderful, full color, crisp map which folds out from the inside back cover (see photo). Guide measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2". Only fault is a bit of light foxing around margins of the back cover and the page across from it, a very common area for foxing. There's one more thing, but I very much like it -- it's an inscription written on the top edge of the back of the front cover. It says, "Sunday afternoon May 23, 1943 with Dave Mirin."

Official World's Fair Weekly Century of Progress Chicago, 1933
12 Official World's Fair Weekly Century of Progress Chicago, 1933
chicago A Century of Progress Internatioanl Exhibition 1933 Vol. I, No. 8 soft cover Very condition
From May to October 1933 the entity overseeing the Chicago World's Fair published a full-out magazine with stories about the exhibits and information on what to do each day. The highlights for this week, the fourth, went on until June 24th. The big event was the Zoo of Dragons. I took a picture of both the ad and the opening pages of the story itself -- quite an endeavor! Other stories include a convention bringing together scientists from all over the world; the exhibition of the painting, Whistler's Mother, which was on loan from a museum in Paris; the story of neon lights; log rolling; faster trains; the art of Sweden; a cyclorama of the Battle of Gettysburg; an Old West Town and much more. Magazine is in clean, tightly bound condition -- very nice. Measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 64 pages.

This card is unused, so no dates written by sender and no post mark. The only clue to find a date here is the pink cloche hat on the lady in the foreground next to the two men. The cloche hat is a Roaring Twenties fashion favorite. Fred Harvey was the restaurant king of his day. This one was beautiful and located in the Chicago train station. Print Chicago Exposition 1893 The Golden Door
17 Print Chicago Exposition 1893 The Golden Door
Chicago The Jones Brothers Publishing Co. 1893 Very good
Very handsome print, one of a portfolio of various scenes from the Chicago Exposition. This one depicts the Transportation Exhibit's famous Golden Door. The print is explained on the reverse side. The reason it was such a big hit is that a single arch, appeared to be several retreating ones. it was also embellished with carvings, bas reliefs, and mural paintings. The print with margins measures 8-/2" x 12" with the image measuring 6" x 9" Very clean and nice with a flat superficial crease to upper left corner which would not be seen after framing.

The Book and Catalogue of the Second Retrospective Exhibition of the Art Institute Alumni Association (Chicago 1922)
20 The Book and Catalogue of the Second Retrospective Exhibition of the Art Institute Alumni Association (Chicago 1922)
Chicago The Art Institute of Chicago 1922 soft cover Good
This is a spectacular find -- gorgeous graphic art and nine tipped-in art works from the exhibition. Of those artists the one I recognized was C.A. Willimvosky who was an important Impressionist of the 20th century. He died in 1971. The show was huge -- 696 works in these categories: applied art, architecture, graphic arts, painting, and sculpture. The catalog also includes a narrative entitled The Manuscript on Gray Charcoal Paper by Thomas Wood Stevens who appears to have corrected errors of fact in a submission by an unknown sender. The catalog has some issues -- edge wear, wear to both ends of spine with small bits of paper loss, re-stapling by a former owner and a small piece of archival tape to top of spine and to reverse side of top corners to keep them from snapping off. The inside of the catalog is lovely -- very clean, no writing, heavy, beautiful paper and deckled edges. Scarce item.
