Catholic Funeral Memorial Book Unused in Original Box
1 Catholic Funeral Memorial Book Unused in Original Box
Independence Funeral Home Vodargka Funeral Home No date Hard cover Fine condition in Very Good Box
Very pretty cover and two more paintings inside. The book has not been used and is very nice in its original white box. The book is without defect and the box nearly so. There are a couple small white spots on the white background which I almost missed. Otherwise it's a clean, sturdy box. The book measures 7-1/2" x 10" and is clean and bright inside and out. The binding is that of a ring binder that we used to take to school. The book has spaces for name, date and place of birth, age, and date of death. There's also room for photos, funeral notes, the names of officiants, music, the rituals at the cemetery, plus a page for a list of family and friends, floral offerings, comments from the bereaved, life memories, obituaries and more. VERY nice.

John M. Ashbrook Late A Representative From Ohio: Memorial Addresses Delivered In Congress 1982
3 John M. Ashbrook Late A Representative From Ohio: Memorial Addresses Delivered In Congress 1982
Washington, D.C. U.S. Government Printing Office 1982 Presumed first Hard cover Fine condition
I have seen these memorials for a couple members of the House and Senate, but this is the most contemporary. Representative John M. Ashbrook R., was a strong conservative, so much so that the 1982 Alamanac of Amderican Politics called his far right beliefs "almost a catalog of lost causes." But Ashbrook was heartily memoralized by his colleagues. The Ohioans who spoke were Clarence J. Brown, Dennis E. Eckhart, Willis D. Gradison Jr.. Tony P. Hall, Thomas N. Kindness, Delbert L. Latta, Bob McEwen, Clarence E. Miller, Michael G. Oxley, Donald J. Pease, Ralph Regula, John F. Seiberling, Bob Shamansky, Louis Stokes, Ed Weber, Chalmers P. Wylie, The Honorable John Glenn, and Haward M. Metzenbaum. The book measures 6" x 9" and is bo,ud in a handsome black cloth. The book has 96 pristine pages and no names or writing anywhere. Rep. Ashbrook died at 53.

Memorial Record Nancy Bakewell Munroe 1941 (Bakewell Genealogy)
6 Memorial Record Nancy Bakewell Munroe 1941 (Bakewell Genealogy)
Chicago. Illinois Unknown 1941 soft cover Very good
This may have a connection to another item we have -- a booklet about the life of a Catholic priest of the 19th century, a Father Bakewell. This booklet is a memorial to the life and death of Nancy Bakewell Munroe, born in St. Louis, Missouri and died at the age of 85 in Chicago. The booklet is very clean and nice with cording and a tassel. It includes family genealogy, a list of her grandsons who were casket bearers, lists of people who attended and who brought food etc.. For some reason all names are checked. Loose inside there are several extras including an early holy card commemorating the 1927 death of a Nancy De Laureal Bakewell who died in St. Louis. The other items include a card for this Nancy (all were Catholic) and two newspaper articles about her. She was married to Otto M. Munroe and was as a child healed from a hip disease via a miracle associated with Madeleine Sophie Barat, founder of the Sacred Heart Order.

Private Mailing Cards William McKinley Home, McKinley Funeral (1891-1901)
7 Private Mailing Cards William McKinley Home, McKinley Funeral (1891-1901)
U.S. Private publisher 1891 Very good condition
These are private mailing cards which have not been used. The back of the cards indicate that they were "Private Mailing Cards" which were authorized by Act of Congress May 19, 1898 and continued through 1901. After that the buzzword was "postcard." The reason these were called Private Mailing Cards is because the government couldn't create enough new images to make the citizens happy, so private printers were allowed to print their own, as long as they maintained the authorization on the back. The house is the McKinley family homed located in Canton, Ohio. The second card shows the pallbearers lifting McKinley's casket into the funeral car at the Depot in Canton, Ohio. Both will arrive in plastic sleeves.

The Language of Flowers; Thirty Floral Prints and the Story of Each Flower 1937
9 The Language of Flowers; Thirty Floral Prints and the Story of Each Flower 1937
Akron, Ohio Billows Funeral Chapel 1937 Very Good
A beautiful collection of floral prints with a folded flap explaining the story and meaning of each flower. All thirty are pristine and very beautiful, seemingly provided by a funeral home. I suspect that the set was made by another company and then purchased by the funeral home for distribtion as a subtle means to advertise their services. At any rate, it's a thing of beauty and the only one we've ever seen. The outer wrapper is a bit worn at the folds, but I ironed and repaired a few tears at the reverse side with archival tape and it once again looks presentable. The contents are pristine.

The Murder of George Wythe (Colonial Virginia Published 1955)
11 The Murder of George Wythe (Colonial Virginia Published 1955)
Williamsburg, Virginia The Institute of Early American History and Culture 1955 card cover Very good
Very nice clean booklet which tells a fascinating tale. George Whythe may not be a household name, but he was a big deal in colonial America -- first American law professor, abolitionist, noted classics scholar, Virginia judge, and the first of the seven Virginia signers of the United States Declaration of Independence. He also served as representative in the Continental Congress and at the Constitutional Convention.AND he taught and mentored to Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall, and Henry Clay. So when he turned up murdered it was no small mater. The booklet solves the case with 64 detailed pages. It measures 6"x9" and is very clean and attractive. Contains two essays, "The Murder of George Wythe" by Julian P, Boyd and "Examinations of George Wythe Swinney for Forgery and Murder" by W. Edwin Hempill.

To Those Who See (1965 gift book association copy), Frostic, Gwen
12 Frostic, Gwen To Those Who See (1965 gift book association copy)
Benzonia, Michigan Presscraft Papers 1965 hard cover Good-plus
This is a rather unique copy of a fairly common book, as it was owned by a doctor of note from The Cleveland Clinic who wrote by hand in it about death. The book itself is an early artist's book, a genre which is today a growing sector of the book market. Gwen Frostic, a Michigan artist, wrote poetry and paired it with art and beautiful artists' paper. On the back endpaper of this copy the doctor wrote out a poem by Mrs.Coolidge about the death of President Calvin Coolidge's son during his stint in the White House. On the back pastedown next to it the Cleveland doctor wrote about the death of his wife and his remarriage. The final sentences are "Since we know nothing of death except that it comes to all it is not reasonable to be sad for the person who has died. What I felt for myself in my loss now has been transformed to a rich memory of a woman I loved and the ways we traveled through the world together." Book measures 6-1/2x9-1/2". Writing by doctor has been taped in. Only other fault is browning to raw edges of fibrous artist paper. (BIO)

Athena Tacha: Massacre Memorials And Other Public Projects (1984), Lippard, Lucy
13 Lippard, Lucy Athena Tacha: Massacre Memorials And Other Public Projects (1984)
New York City Max Hutchinson Gallery 1984 Card cover Very good condition
This is a remarkably scarce catalog by an artist who was born in Greece, but worked in Ohio at least for awhile. This catalog is very clean and nice with just some minor edge wear. The opening is a very good essay by Lucy Lippard who explains the artist's work and accompanis it with notes on the massacre memorials and on tile designs for urban spaces. The exhibition for which this catalog was published occurred in NYC from October 25 to November 17, 1984. Catalog measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 14 pages printed on card stock. As this writing I have another catalog of Atherna Tacha's art.

Patricia Cronin; All Is Not Lost (sculpture art catalog, 2012), Molesworh Helen
14 Molesworh Helen Patricia Cronin; All Is Not Lost (sculpture art catalog, 2012)
USA Newcomb Art Gallery, Tulane University 2012 0966859510 / 9780966859515 Hard Cover As New Condition No Dustjacket, As Issued
This is a gorgeous art catalog inside and out. What I like about it in addition to its beauty is the information it provides about the artist and her work. I like that there's photos of her creating these oversized sculptures. I also am taken with a section titled Ghosts and Sculpture, Harriet Hosmer and Patricia Cronin. Harriet Hosmer, as it turns out, was an artist who at the age of 20 in 1851 had a supernatural encounter. She, too, was a sculptor and here she and Cronin merge ghosts and sculpture and love and death in the 21st century. The catalog measures 8-1/4" x 10-1/4" and has 72 pages, several in color.

Ancient Chinese Tomb Sculpture March 22 to April 10, 2004, No author
15 No author Ancient Chinese Tomb Sculpture March 22 to April 10, 2004
New York City J.J. Lally and Company, Oriental Art 2004 Card cover Very good condition
Beautiful exhibit catalog in clean tightly bound condition with no names or writing. The cover is fashioned of cardstock which serves as both cover and dustjacket with deep "endpapers." Twenty specimens were on exhibit and each has a full page, full color presentation with lengthy descriptions for all. The first work seen in the catalog is spectacular (see photo) of the painted pottery orchestral group of three musicians playing bells, chimes and drum. It dates from the Western Han Dynasty (206 B.C. -- A.D. 8). Catalog measures 8-1/2" x 11". Only fault is three page corner creases which I have ironed and put in the book press, so all are lying perfectly flat. Price reduced to compensate for defect.

The Garfield Memorial (1894), No author
16 No author The Garfield Memorial (1894)
Cleveland, Ohio Garfield National Memorial Association 1894 Hard cover Very good No DJ, as issued
This is a scarce little booklet published after the installation of the President James Garfield Memorial Statue in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. There was one copy which came out in 1890, but it has only two pages of text. This later one debuted in 1894 with eight pages of text and two pages showing the state by state and territory contributions to the project which came to $134,755.70. Eventually it grew to $150,000. Following the financials the booklet is comprised of 16 photographs, one per page. I have attached the photo of the crypt. The book is hard cover and measures 6"x9". Four Dark Days in History; A Photo History of President Kennedy's Assassination, No author stated
17 No author stated Four Dark Days in History; A Photo History of President Kennedy's Assassination
Los Angeles, CA. Special Publications Inc. 1963 Collectors' Edition soft cover Very good condition The Evening Star, Washington D.C.
This is a common publication, but a very good one for looking back at the death of President Kennedy and also looking at it for the first time. The photographs are very large and tell the story greatly with the help of the text and the captions under the photos. It begins with the breakfast in Texas and the president's final talk. Fromthere a few pages are given to the motorcade until the shots hit the president. The story goes on until the funeral is over and the the First Lady takes the American flag presented to her. The last items are the Congrssional Record for both the House and the Senate. The booklet measures 8-1/4" x 10-3/4" and has 59 counted pages. The binding is secure and there are no creases or writing. The only fault is a little wavines on to edge of the pages -- no water marks.

A Tribute to John Fitzgerald Kennedy by Helen Steiner Rice (1963), Rice, Helen Steiner
18 Rice, Helen Steiner A Tribute to John Fitzgerald Kennedy by Helen Steiner Rice (1963)
Cincinnati, Ohio Gibson Greeting Cards 1963 card cover Good condition
This very handsome tribute to JFK is quite scarce. The poem inside was written by Helen Steiner Rice and is likely in one of her many books. But this trubute is beautifully designed including the raised gold medallion on the cover. It's also quite large at 7"x11". The poem was read on the Lawrence Welk Show on November 30, 1963. The Gibson Card Company must have had a relationship with Lawrence Welk because I once had five miniature books, each of which had one Steiner-Rice poem for text and three of those five were also read on the show. The tribute is very clean and nice, but it does show age toning to the front around the edges predominately.
