1862 Johnson's Map of Washington and Oregon
1 1862 Johnson's Map of Washington and Oregon
Unknown Location Johnson and Ward circa 1863 later printing
The 1862 map of the territories of Washington and Oregon is a lovely thing with its hand coloring and handsome double face font for lettering. If you look in the lower corner you see the number 57 which indicates it was the 57th plate in Alvin J. Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas published originally by Johnson and Browning in 1862. The question is when was this particular one printed? It states on the map that the publisher was Johnston and Ward which means it's around 1863, as that's the year the company's name changed from Johnson and Browning to Johnson and Ward. The map was made at the start of the Civil War with much land especially in eastern Oregon not settled, but you can also pick out sites such as Mt. Ranier and Fremont's Peak among others, plus you can see the route proposal for the Pacific Railroad. The map measures roughly 13" x 17". It's a guess though because it's been professionally double matted snd that's all I can see of it. Only faults are a dark spot to upper right corner and a small surface mar to mat at about 3-1/2" down from the top left. There is a small tear to the mat and a thin indentation next to it on the map itself, but the paper is not torn. The map including matting mesures 18" x 22". Will ship for $2 in U.S.

Atlas de Columbia; Una Contribucione al Majer Conocimiento de Nuestro Pais
2 Atlas de Columbia; Una Contribucione al Majer Conocimiento de Nuestro Pais
Columbia Superarmericana Editions Colina 1960's soft cover Very good
Very clean, crisp book measuring 5"x"7". Only fault is a faint shadow to front cover from a price sticker. There is no date, but research indicates that these were published in the 1960's. Language is SPANISH, but there is no real text -- just lists and charts of statistics, all of which show places and numbers only, so they are easily read by English speaking readers. The maps are located at the front, 44 in all -- and all in full color.

Cheltenham and London Ed. J. burrows & co. Ltd. circa 1930's Third Edition soft cover Very Good
A little toning around the edges is all that detracts from this attractive map which shows a tape attached to the map with a grommet for easier reading. The map is surrounded by local ads which add greatly to the sense of the era. Map measures 6-1/4"x10"closed and 23-1/2"x25" fully opened.

Decorative Old Maps of the Sixteenth, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (Six Fine Prints in Full Color 1940)
7 Decorative Old Maps of the Sixteenth, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (Six Fine Prints in Full Color 1940)
New York City Penn Press circa 1940 Very good
I love when I can find a portfolio of prints and ALL the prints are in it. This is the fruit of a lucky day because here we have a giant portfolio measuring 20" across x 16" tall and all six maps are accounted for. The maps are very clean with no tears and are beautiful with the lavish color of the periods. The portfolio itself had a few small tears, all of which I have repaired with almost invisible, non-browning archival tape at back. The maps are as follows: The Map of the World by N.J. Visscher who portrayed California as an island (17th c.); Map of Europe by Mercator from the famous Mercator Hondius Atlat of 1633; Map of Asia by the Blaeu Family, 1662; the Holy Land by Abraham Ortelius from the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first atlas, 1570; New Belgium, New England and Virginia by N.J. Visscher prior to the founding of Philadelphia; and Map of Canada by Guillaume P'Isle, the foremost French cartographer circa 1720. We will ship flat. DUE TO SIZE countries outside the U.S. will incur a higher shipping charge. Please contact us with destination for an exact quote. PRIORITY mail in the U.S. will likewise require additional postage, but economy mail remains at $2.00

Florida Official Road Map 1952
8 Florida Official Road Map 1952
State Road Department of Florida 1952 soft cover Fine
Crisp, clean, seemingly unused, map of Florida -- just the thing for a 50's road trip. What's neat about it is that you could use the front address lines and send it back home to friends and family. This one, however, was not sent. The map sports color photos and when folded is larger than the maps issued by the service stations. Closed it meaures 5"x8-1/2". There's extra tourist info too, such as a list of the meanings of Florida Indian names. Note on front -- "Drive safely .... prevent sorrow." This was a time when kids bounced around the backseat of the car like balls for playing jacks. I was one of them!!

Magnetic Declination in the United States 1935
9 Magnetic Declination in the United States 1935
Washignton D.C. U.S. Department of Commerce 1935 soft cover Good
I must admit that I had no idea what magnetic declination was when I bought this booklet. The mystery of it intrigued me and I'm forever attracted to huge maps in small booklets. As it turns out, magnetic declination refers to the angle on the horizontal plane between magnetic north (the direction in which the north end of a compass needle points), and true north (the direction along a meridian towards the geographic North Pole). Apparently this angle varies depending on one's position on the Earth's surface, and over time. So this booklet charts it in the U.S. in 1935. The large fold-out map offers a picture of the changes. The map measures 23"x28" and is crisp and clean with no tears. The booklet measures 6"x9" and has 47 pages illustrated with tables of info. As you can see, the cover shows some smudges. I ran a document pad over it, but it proved impervious.

Map of Roman Britain Scale 16 Miles To One Inch (1956)
10 Map of Roman Britain Scale 16 Miles To One Inch (1956)
Chessington Surrey, England The Ordnance Survey 1956 Third Edition Card cover Good condition
The map folded inside this booklet is enormous measuring 32" across and 42" high. And better yet it's crisp and clean as the day it was printed. The booklet also shows five pages of maps within the text, plus a chronological table, Roman names of places and tribes, notes on maps in the text, and a topographical index. There is also info on changes in the use of symbols, military sites, towns and settlements, the countryside, funeral monuments, industry and mining, communications, aqueducts, lighthouses, theatres and amphitheatres, and a bibliographical note. Booklet measures 8-1/4" x 11" with clean and tightly bound pages. The only faults is creasing to edges, though I did re-glue all four corners and they are strong again.

China Chengdu Cartographic Publishing House 2005 7805448280 / 9787805448282 Card folder Very good condition
Enormous map -- it measures when completely open at 29-1/2" tall and 42" wide. The best part though is the paper it's printed on. It's heavy, glossy, and very easy to fold back up. The scale is 1:6 000 000. Folder measures 8" x 11" and is also very clean. Only faults are minor small creases to outer corners.

Nautical Chart 12324 New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway Sandy Hook to Little Egg Harbor (1975)
12 Nautical Chart 12324 New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway Sandy Hook to Little Egg Harbor (1975)
Washington D.C. U.S. Department of Commerce; National Oceanicand Armospheric Adminsitration; Ocean Survey 1975 Edition 13 Card cover Good folder, fine map
Nautical charts are interesting and this one is huge. The folder is a bit toned and has a couple small abrasions -- one at upper left hand corner at front and one on back of the folder at the middle left. Both sides of it offer extended information. I opened the map to its length and measured it at 15" x 57" long (see photos). The map is pristine with no tears to folds -- no defects at all. The map's scale is 1.40.000 nautical miles. There's also a brochure inside with a 1975 tide table for Long Beach Island and vicinity published by Sandy's Sport Shop of Surf City, New Jersey.

Rome Inside Out: Pop-up Map, 64 Page Guide, Compass and Pen (2003)
13 Rome Inside Out: Pop-up Map, 64 Page Guide, Compass and Pen (2003)
England The Map Group 2003 1904766188 / 9781904766186 Hard cover Fine condition, all parts working
This is the cleverest travel guide I've ever seen. I have had pop-up maps, but not with a 64 page guide in color, a pen nestled inside the spine and a flip-top cap above the pen which houses the compass. It's a great size at 4" x 6" too, perfect for carrying around. The contents say, "See it, buy it, watch it, taste it, know it, note it, index it, and speak it! Sounds like a vacation!

Small Coloured Relief-Panorama of the Rhine With Text Inserted No. 2 (1931)
14 Small Coloured Relief-Panorama of the Rhine With Text Inserted No. 2 (1931)
Hoursch & Bechstedt 1931 soft cover Very Good
This is a magnificent travel item hiding its beauty between a rather bland cover. As soon as you open it out spills 11 panels which together give you a look at the Rhine and its towns from Colgne to Mainz in bold jewel-like colors. Each panel includes text artfully blended against the background to provide a bit of history, an attraction or two, and the population of each town. Very nice addition to a Golden Age travel collection

Special Map A in Original Envelope with Protractors (ROTC, 1935)
15 Special Map A in Original Envelope with Protractors (ROTC, 1935)
Harrisburg, PA The Military Service Publishing Company 1935 Fine Map in Good Envelope
A colorful map printed as an adjunct to ROTC textbooks. The date printed on the map at lower corner is 1935. The map folds nicely into its original envelope which measures 6-1/2" x 9-1/2". I ironed the envelope and repaired a tear with archival tape and it's quite clean and useable now. Only real fault is loss of corners to flap. The map is crisp with no tears and enormous at 31" across and 33-3/4" high. There are a couple small spots of foxing to margin, but overall it's a beauty. The two cardboard protractors are present and without defect. Very nice overall.

Tourist Map of Greece (Very Large, 1952)
16 Tourist Map of Greece (Very Large, 1952)
Athens, Greece National Tourist Office of Greece 1952 Folds Very good condition
The thing I like about folded maps is that moment when it unfolds in all its glory -- especially if the colors are strong and the size is huge. This one is THAT one -- yellow and blue domination and a whopping 28" across and 34" tall. When folded it measures 4-1/2" x 9-1/2". A former owner wrote his name on the top in pencil, but I never like to erase that sort of thing, but you can if you want. There's also a travel stamp that makes it look official.

17 United States Gulf Coast Florida Nautical Chart From Estero Bay to Lemon Bay Including Charlotte Harbor (11426)
Washington D.C. United States Department of Commerce September 4, 1982 25th edition soft cover Very good
Enormous navigational chart which measures 36"x48" yet folds up to a neat 9"x12". It's very clean and crisp with just a little browning to a couple edges on reverse side. There is also a wrinkle at a panel which looks like it may have ocurred during printing. Soundings recorded in feet. Very nice overall.

Virginia Official State Map 1937
18 Virginia Official State Map 1937
Richmond, Virginia Department of Highways 1937 March, 1937 soft cover Very good
Huge map measuring 18"x31" when completely unfolded, but folds down back down to a handy 5"x8". The map is quite nice on both sides, as one of the reverse section shows small photographs of Virginia's attractions. There are no tears or writing. The only fault is a few light spots of toning to cover. Overall, quite nice.

Visitors Guide to the Centennial Exhibition and Philadelphia 1876
19 Visitors Guide to the Centennial Exhibition and Philadelphia 1876
Philadelphia J.R. Lippincott & Co. 1876 Hard cover Good condition
Small hard cover vistors' guide which sports two large maps -- one in black and white of 1876 Philadelphia and the other a colorful panorama of the grounds of the exhibition. Both maps are good sized -- see photo of the fairgrounds map in full color below. What I love about this particular book is the inscription written by the owner who actually went to see the spectacle. In pencil she wrote, "Mother and Grace visited the exposition in July, 1876. Keep it 'til 1976!" There's also a small newspaper about the Smithsonian's effort to create a new centennial in 1976! The good news is nobody threw this book away. It measures 4-1/2" x 7" and has 48 pages illustrated with a few engravings. P.S. I made a few repairs to back of map with archival tape. Ypu can barely see it on the back and not at all on the front.

20 World At A Glance Advertising Map Margo Fine Wines (1940's)
New York City Hill Specialties 1940's Hard cover
This is a clever little gizmo made by Hill Specialities and sold to businesses which had them printed with their own company names. This one is advertising "Margo Fine Wines, Make Every Meal A Banquet!" ad the retailer, Bisceglia Brothers Corporation, Philadelphia. The map can be viewed in micro by using one of the eleven tabs seen at front. To see the whole map and go macro you pull out the cardboard pieces like an accordinan. Folded the map measures 3" x 6-1/4" and can fit a shirt pocket.
