1 "Seated at the organ I was weary and ill at ease" The Lost Chord Vintage Postcard
New York The Knapp Company Unknown Near fine
This is the prettiest card I've seen using a line from F. Earl Christy's poem "The Lost Chord." Most of them are in black and white with a rather disheveled background, though more of the verse. This shows only the first line -- clearly it's part of a series -- which reads "Seated one day at the organ I was weary and ill at ease ..." The small center graphic is lovely and makes for an understated, elegant card. It has not been postally used and there is no writing. It's numberd 381.

75th Anniversary Gala Program Severance Hall, September 30, 2006 (Cleveland, Ohio)
2 75th Anniversary Gala Program Severance Hall, September 30, 2006 (Cleveland, Ohio)
Cleveland, Ohio Severance Hall 2006 7sth Anniversary Card cover Very good condition
Very handsome souvenir commemorating Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra. Seventy-five years of fine music is captured in these pages, including blue tinted pictures. There are many people named in the first two pages -- chairs, co-chairs, honorary committee members, gala committee, grand benefactors, benefactors, patrons, and leadership gift donors. There's also a nice section about the orchestra's summer 2006 European tour, plus a retrospective of years past. The Opening Night Gala program is listed along with a bio of Franz Welser-Most, Music Director, and more. Program measures 8-1/2" x 11-1.2" and has 24 pages. Only fault is a small bit of scratching to lower back corner next to spine. Overall quite lovely and worth keeping.

Caruso was, and still is, THE MAN when the topic turns to opera. This over-sized booklet measuring 8-1/2"x11" is packed with photographs and information in 39 pages -- with NO advertising. It's also in good clean condition with just a small touch of wear at the upper front corner and a little rubbing, also at front. Alice (1992 Opera)
5 Alice (1992 Opera)
Hamburg, Germany Thalia Theatre 1992 soft cover Good-plus
An uncommon item, published in tandem with the opening of the dark opera, Alice, which is based on Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The lyrics probe not the story as much as how it pertains to its author. Was not intended for children. Inside front cover (see photo two) is a small drawing signed by its artist. I can't decipher the first namel, but I do believe the last name is Zinn. I immediately thought of David Zinn who does have a history with the Thalia Theatre, but I can't say for sure that this is right. Research shows no account of him having anything to do with the set design for this show. Program is written in both German and English, primarily German, and is illustrated with both black and white photos and drawings plus color plates. Measures 8"x10-1/2" and has 64 pages plus a laid-in insert with info on the songs. Clean and tightly bound with no names or writing, but does show scratches to back cover and a small bit of edge wear, also at back.

Baldwin Wallace Alumnus (July, August 1967)
6 Baldwin Wallace Alumnus (July, August 1967)
Berea, Ohio Baldwin Wallace College 1967 soft cover Good-plus
Oversized magazine with a wonderful cover graphic. It measures 10"x 13-1/4 and has 33 pages. The back shows a mailing label discreetly placed in the area designed for it and there is also a bit of edge wear to the spine area, none of which impinges of the integrity of the binding. If you graduated from BW in 1967 or were at the Alumni party the same year there's lots of memories in this one. There's also an article about BW's admired Conservatory and the cover and fold-out celebrate the art of Felix de Weldon, the artist pictured beneath the enormous horses on the cover. There's also BW sports in here and news from the classes from 1898 to 1967

7 Balieff's Chauve-Souris of Moscow American Season Under the Direction of F. Ray Comstock and Morris Gest 1923
New York The Dancey-Davis Press 1923 soft cover Very Good
Very beautiful and scarce program published for the 1923-24 American season of this Russian musical comedy prduction. Oversized at 9-1/4"x12-1/4" and lavishly illustrated with black and white photographs and eye-popping color art. Nikita Balieff was considered the bad boy of the Russian stage which is why his performances were so lauded. Al Jolsen said of him, "I have been to three Tuesday matinees, and if you give another performance before breakfast, I shall be there too." 32 pages. This is the original program, not a modern reprint.

Cabinet Card Musician With Horn (Portsmouth, Ohio 1890)
9 Cabinet Card Musician With Horn (Portsmouth, Ohio 1890)
Portsmouth, Ohio S. Kiefer Art Studio 1890 Very Good
This is a very handsome cabinet card produced by the Art Studio of S. Kiefer of Portsmouth, Ohio. The subject is wearing a band uniform, but the only guess as to what band it was is the word on his hat. I used a magnifying glass to read "Civic" which could mean that he played in the town band. At any rate, someone penned the date on the front of the card -- October 2, 1890. The studio that made this must have been upscale, as the sides of the card are scalloped and colored in gilt. The back of the card is lovely too -- it's a shame that a former seller had placed two stickers on the back --one left a blemish to the very top and the second one is still there. The photographer offered this info, "Negatives preserved for future orders. Children's pictures a specialty. Instantaneous Process Used exclusively."

10 Carnegie Hall Program; The Philharmonic Symphony Society of New York Program (John Barbiolli Conductor 1941-42)
New York Alfred Scott 1941-1942 Season soft cover Near fine condition
Very nice, attractive program from the 1941-42 Centennial season of the Philharmonic-Symphony Society of New York for the April 1 and 2 performances under the direction of John Barbirolli, noted earlier as a cellist and later as a conductor. He served as music director of the New York Philharmonic from 1937-42. This offering consists of the Carnegie Hall program with the explanatory Philharmonic one laid-in. The Carnegie Hall program features Barbiolli's portrait on the cover as well as an ad inside for his recordings on Columbia Records. The performance consisted of Bach's Chorale Prelude "Wenn wir in hochsten Nothen sind" arranged for orchestra by Barbirolli and Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater."Carnegie Hall program measures 7-1/2"x10-1/4" and has 14 pages, while the Philharmonic program measures 6"x9".

Chautauqua Summer Center For Music and Drama Season Program 1942 (Plus Related Ephemera)
11 Chautauqua Summer Center For Music and Drama Season Program 1942 (Plus Related Ephemera)
Chautauqua, New York Chautauqua Institution June, 1942 Vol. 7 No. 117 soft cover Very Good
Very nice clean program which shows the schedule for the entire summer of music and theatre at Chautauqua during the summer of 1942, as well as articles and photographs of the performers. Measures 8-1/2"x 11-1/4" and has 32 pages. There is a vertical crease down the center from having been folded, as so many programs were, but the crease is light. What's interesting about this particular one is the stuff I found inside. The previous owner was a young woman, Elizabeth Lorson, from Wooster, Ohio who was in New York City hoping to be taken on by a voice trainer of merit. Someone from back home wrote the following Western Union telegram (includes envelope) to her which was sent to the Parnassus Club in 1941. It reads, "Fear not about missing the boat. Most likely overcrowded. Anyway advise trying man Genevieve works with Sidney Dietch. His approach remotely like Griffith. Feel winter in New York with right teacher most valuable. You can always come home to me if conditions unhappy. Will write very soon. Lovingly, Eve." Dietch was one of the very finest in the city. Also, included is a postcard stating that the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra would be broadcasted on the radio August 10th, 1941. The message on the reverse is written by the young lady seeking a voice teacher. It reads "Just got mother's letter telling me May is probably coming. Will sure be glad to see who ever comes. Don't suppose you'd get this before Saturday. Will write soon. Love, Betty." She apparently was part of the music program at Chautauqua in 1941. The final item is a photo of an opera singer named Helen Jepson previously from Akron, Ohio, clipped from an unknown source. Wooster is close enough to Akron to have inspired Betty! (Elizbeth)

Cher Living Proof Farewell Tour 2003 (With Ticket Gund Arena Cleveland)
12 Cher Living Proof Farewell Tour 2003 (With Ticket Gund Arena Cleveland)
Unknown loation Isis Productions Inc. 2003 card cover Very good Condition
If you're a Cher fan and don't have one of these you might want to take a look -- it's a dazzler! There's almost no text, but the photographs are all in color, huge, and spectacular. The cherry on the cake is the entire ticket-- not just the stub. It's an adult ticket for Gund Arena, Cleveland, Ohio May 16, 2003 at 7:30 p.m.. and shows a price of $79.75. This is not a program -- it's a homage and an oversized one at 12" x 15-1/2". Pages are clean and tightly bound, but there is some edge wear at spots to both side of cover. Price has been lowered accord8ngly.

Chicago Grand Opera Company Program Season 1912-1913 (Prices and seating chart laid-in)
13 Chicago Grand Opera Company Program Season 1912-1913 (Prices and seating chart laid-in)
Chicago, Illinois Chicago Grand Opera Company 1912 soft cover Very good
This is an early program for the opera season of 1912-1913 held at the Auditorium Theatre of Chicago. Other than a few corner creases that I have pressed flat, the program is clean and bright with no names or writing. The current opera was Thais and the program includes its story, plus a list of others past and future, photos of opera stars, and lists of box holders and the nights they were to be present. As always, local ads abound, but these are quite graphically appealing. The program also includes a separate seating chart (see photo) with the various prices of seats. Program measures 7"x10" and has 32 pages.

Choice Songs From Crowning Glory (Hymnal, 1893)
14 Choice Songs From Crowning Glory (Hymnal, 1893)
Chicago Billhorn Brothers 1893 Hard cover Good condition
This is a slim hymnal of 104 songs. It was owned by Mrs. Ellen C. Hammett who declared it her book on front free endpaper with a simple penciled name and date of 1894. The book is lacking a few pieces of overlay paper primarily along outer edge of front cover. There are also a few toned areas on front endpaper. The pages are otherwise very clean and binding is tight. The ones I recognized are Bringing In the Sheaves, Rock of Ages, and Nearer My God to Thee. Book measures 5-1/2" x 8"

Choirs From the Basilicas and the Vatican (Program Laid-in) 1919
15 Choirs From the Basilicas and the Vatican (Program Laid-in) 1919
New York St. Gregory Musical society Inc. 1919 soft cover Very Good
This two-piece souvenir of a 1919 evening of liturgical music marks the first time in history that the choirs from the Roman Basilicas and the Vatican performed outside of Rome. The program does not indicate the city directly, but an Ohio reference on back cover and the fact that the location was St. Clair Avenue leads us to believe it had to have been Cleveland. The most important piece, however, is the larger brochure which measures 8x10" and is profusely illustrated and filled with information about the choirs and their history. Although unpaginated, we counted 24. Cover, though simple, is banded in gold with ecclisastical decoration.

Very nice clean sheet music focused on one song -- The Song of the Shepherd Boy which is the last one in the list of printed music on the front page. Wichita, Kansas Player Piano Company Inc. 1991 1991-1992 Catalog Soft cover Very good condition
This is a remarkable trade catalog which confines itself to all things player piano, but if you have one, or want one, this is fun to read. Right on the front cover Armstrong says he has "the lagest selection of player piano parts and accessories in the world" It sure looks possible! The first section displays such things as bellows cloth, lubricants, punches, gaskets, leather and ward washers, suction units and much, much more. The second section is all about those music rolls, but not all of them are vintage. Well, they are now because the newest songs are from the late 80's! Also included is an unused order blank. 18 Earl Carroll Theatre New York Program 1928 (W.C. Fields)
New York City Earl Carroll Theatre 1928 soft cover Very good
It's relatively easier to find Earl Carroll ephemera from his California night club days than it is from his earlier NYC theatre. But here we have a program from his seventh Follies, this time featuring the famous W.C. Fields. The program has very nice ads and lot of photos of the performers including a large picture of Fields. What's also fun is a close-up article about Carroll's eccentricities, of which there were many! The program measures 9"x12" and has 25 pristine pages. Nice quality item, clean and tightly bound with just a tiny abrasion to front cover.

Earl Carroll's Vanities Beauty Souvenir (1940's)
19 Earl Carroll's Vanities Beauty Souvenir (1940's)
California Oscar Tittman No date. circa 1940's soft cover Very good
Collectors of Hollywood and California memorabilia will love this program from Earl Carroll's Vanities, a nightspot once located on Sunset Blvd. in L.A. The booklet measures 8"x11" and has plentiful black and white photographs as well as odd facts such as his measurements for the perfect girl (including her ankles and wrists) and his Demandments of Beauty. I counted 16 pages. Booklet is clean and tightly bound with just a bit of rubbing to spine area. Earl Carroll died at the age of 55 in a bizarre plane crash in 1948. I also have some postcards of the showgirls.
