A Pocket Guide To New Zealand (Military Personnel 1943 WWII)
2 A Pocket Guide To New Zealand (Military Personnel 1943 WWII)
Washington, D.C. War and Navy Department 1943 soft cover
Very nice clean booklet, one of many for various countries in which U.S. military forces maintained a presence in WWII. The booklet measures 4" x 5-1/4" with 43 pages plus a blank page for notes (unused). Though the subject is serious, there are a few cartoony pages to inject a bit of humor -- there's also a map, a list of common phrases, and an overview of New Zealand slang. We have other pocket guides in the series, so let me know if you are lookingg for a specific title.

A Pocket Guide To Western Africa (For Military Personnel 1943 WWII)
3 A Pocket Guide To Western Africa (For Military Personnel 1943 WWII)
Washington D.C. Special Service Division, Army Services Forces, United States Army 1943 soft cover Very Good
Handy and truly pocket-sized guide for WII soldiers serving in Africa. It measures just 4-1/4" x 5-1/4" and has 39 pages of information. There's also a map, a short history of the region, and what to do and not to do. Booklet is very clean and attractive. An example of the cautions is this one "Treat an Af5rican with some formality. Most Africans dislike horseplay and backslapping. They like to shake hands." I also have other guides for soldiers in other countries available.

American Forestry Magazine December, 1918 (WWI Emphasis)
5 American Forestry Magazine December, 1918 (WWI Emphasis)
Washington D.C. American Forestry Association 1918 Volume 34, Number300 soft cover Good 1
Magazine shows a little light soil to cover and a flat crease at lower front corner. The spine strip is intact, though I glued it a little at top and bottom. Magazine has no label and the pages are pristine aside from a bit of light soil and tiny flat creases to lower corners of a few pages at front. Printed on quality coated paper. Many black and white photographs. Because this was war time even forestry turned its attention to the war and those who served in it. Application for Appointment As Flying Cadet (WWII Documents 1942)
7 Application for Appointment As Flying Cadet (WWII Documents 1942)
U.S. Government 1942 Stapled papers Very good condition
The Flying Cadets are not heard of much today, but in WWII they provided a considerable amount of personnel. Some were even on the ground working as flight engineers, armament officers, meteorologists, and photography officers. After the war, however, the ground jobs were no longer needed. The Flying Cadets, however, came back in good numbers to serve in the Korean War as pilots, navigators and bombardiers. This five page document was submitted by a Clevelander along with three positive referrals from two Cleveland companies -- two different ones from Cleveland Diesel Engine Division of General Motors and one from General Carloading Company Inc.. The four small documents are receipts for paying his premium for VA service life insurance. Three of these are dated 1945 and one is dated 1946. All are clean and nice.

Civil War Envelope The Rebel States South Carolina (1861)
9 Civil War Envelope The Rebel States South Carolina (1861)
New York Reigles & Co. 1861 Very Good condition
Here's an ephemera item which deserve its title -- the odds of an empty envelope hanging around for over 150 years is amazing. I have never seen one before in person, but I have seen pictures. These were printed for multiple states, but this one happens to be from South Carolina. The devil carrying the flag, the bold letters spelling The Rebel States, and the pastel color were used for all. What differentiates them is the state's particular seal in front of the devil. The envelope is closed, but there is nothing in it. It measures 3" tall by 5-1/2" wide. It will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve.

Cleveland Official Souvenir of the Thirty-Fifth National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic 1911
10 Cleveland Official Souvenir of the Thirty-Fifth National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic 1911
Cleveland E.W. Doty 1901 Soft cover Good
Wonderful souvenir of the encampment of the Grand Old Army in Cleveland in September, 1911. The program is clean and tightly bound, but does have some faults which include small tears to the yapped edges, a slight vertical crease to a few front pages and soil in a distinct grid pattern to back cover. This is not an oil-based stain, as it does not appear on the reverse side. The binding is tight thanks to two staples, but I wonder if at one time it was bound with thread, as there are three very tiny holes through the entire spine. At any rate, the pages are clean as a whistle and there are 92 of them. Coated paper and many black and white photographs enhance the text which is likewise plentiful. A significant item for collectors of Cleveland history, Grand Army of the Republic, or military. Measures 7"x10-1/2"

Collier's Magazine July 10, 1943 (General Jonathan Wainwright POW)
12 Collier's Magazine July 10, 1943 (General Jonathan Wainwright POW)
Springfield, Ohio Crowell-Collier Publishing Co. 1943 Volume 112, No. 2 soft cover Very Good
Very nice clean magazine with just two faults -- a little foxing to bottom margin on reverse side of cover and the mailing label at front. Otherwise it's tightly bound and attractive. Measures 10-1/2"x13". The issues from the WWII era are especially good -- many color ads with a military theme and a military cover. This cover features General Jonathan Wainwright, Commander of U.S. Forces on Bataan Peninsula March 18-May 6, 1942 when he was taken as a prisoner of war in Formosa. There's an article inside about it. Other interesting articles include Presidential predictions for 1944; the opium boats, sinister "pleasure ships" which sailed from Hong Kong before the Japanese were at war, but ultimately revealed Japan's silent weapon; and life behind barbed wire. There are also a number of short stories, including one from the very popular, Faith Baldwin,

Description of the Rules for the Management of the Springfield Rifle Carbine and Army Revolvers Calibre .45
15 Description of the Rules for the Management of the Springfield Rifle Carbine and Army Revolvers Calibre .45
Unknown circa 1960 Reprint soft cover Very good
Though there is no reprint publisher named and the date shows as 1874, this booklet is far too new for this to be true. I think this is the Ray Riling reproduction from 1960. I had one once and, as I recall, it looked like this. The booklet was originally published in 1874 by the National Armory of Springfield, Mass. The pages are constructed from quality coated paper, including the fold-out diagram at the back. The booklet measures 6"x9-1/2" and has 51 illustrated pages. There is much information here. Very clean with sunning to spine only. former owner's large pictorial bookplate is on the back of the front cover.

Deutschland-Katalog 1977/78 Orden & Ehrenzeichen 1800-1945
16 Deutschland-Katalog 1977/78 Orden & Ehrenzeichen 1800-1945
Munich Jorg Nimmergut 1977 soft cover Very Good condition
This is a small but comprehensive catalog of German Orders and Decoration from 1800 to 1945. It measures 4" x 5-3/4" and has 304 pages. Though it is written in German, it's not hard to use because each drawing is numbered to match the name of the item in German. There are a total of 456 items in all. I bought quite a few of these not long ago, all different, so if you are interested in a different small katalog from Germany let me know and I'll see if I have it.

Echoes of a Lost Generation: Poetry and Essays of the Holocaust (1978)
17 Echoes of a Lost Generation: Poetry and Essays of the Holocaust (1978)
Cleveland Heights, Ohio Cleveland Heights High School 1978 Second edition Card cover Good condition
I bought this booklet years ago in Cleveland Heights, but was not sure where it came from originally ,so back into the closet it went several times. But this time my research answered the question of location. It's a student publication written and published at Cleveland Heights High School. There are stark black and white drawings and a few black and white photos. The students grasped both the history and the emotion of the horror. Many wrote with the voice of the children but others told the story of the adults who lost their lives too. The booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" with 46 pages and each poem or essay is signed by its author. Booklet shows only some light sunning around the edges of the front cover, but is otherwise nice.

Both are like new and unused. Also tucked inside is War for Empire in Western Pennsylvania; Fort Pitt Guidebook. The main booklet measures 6"x9" and has 67 pages including some full page black and white photographs and diagrams. Nice enough to be a gift.

Folding Postcard Nashville, Tennessee WWI Military Message, 1917
19 Folding Postcard Nashville, Tennessee WWI Military Message, 1917
Unknown Unknown 1918 Card cover Good
This is one of those cascading postcard mailers, but the point of this one is not so much the views as the message. All but two pictures (plus reverse views) are gone -- likely the victims of the kids this WWI soldier sent to his family in Ulrichsville, Ohio. His name is Lt. Ernest C. Fox and he was on his way by train to Camp Sheridan, Montgomery, Alabama. The card was sent to his wife and children with this message: "Sept. 17, 1917, Dear Wife and Family, We arrived this far OK. Talk about colored folks, why that is about all one sees here. We have 16 cars on this train now. 498 men and 14 officers. Most of the country so far is just about like home. We have not had our breakfast yet. It is surely nice traveling on the standard Pullman. Will write you when we get to Montgomery, Alabama which will be about tomorrow morning, as we are late because of a heavy train. Love to all, Father."

Fred Harvey Restaurant Menu 1945 (Aid to Military Ribbon Identification)
20 Fred Harvey Restaurant Menu 1945 (Aid to Military Ribbon Identification)
Kansas Fred Harvey Restaurants 1945 card cover Very good
Fred Harvey was a restaurant phenomenon. On this menu it sums up his amazing growth with this line, "from Cleveland to the Pacific coast." This particular menu was printed for the restaurant located in Union Station, Los Angeles and dated Monday, May 28, 1945. In addition to the patriotic cover it's interesting to see how much food has changed in America. Of course the prices are give-away by today's standards -- imagine a cocktail for 35 cents -- but you would rarely see such offerings as what Fred Harvey was serving up for lunch in '45. How about some braised smoked beef tongue with noodles and raisin sauce? Or maybe "our own baked beans with salt pork"? Nice collectible.
