1920's Photograph Girl's First Holy Communion
1 1920's Photograph Girl's First Holy Communion
Cleveland, Ohio B.A. Marquard circa 1920's Card cover Very good condition
This lovely little girl with her bobbed hair, tee-strap shoes, and bonnet veil is adorable. In her hands are the usual rosary and prayer book given to her for First Communion. There's no indication of her name -- the only thing we know for sure is that she was likely a native of Cleveland. The image itself, minus the"frame" and the outer card folder is 3-3/4" x 5-1/2". In the folder it's 6-1/4" x 8-3/4".

1940's Wedding Pictures; Hand Colored and Duotone
2 1940's Wedding Pictures; Hand Colored and Duotone
Cleveland, Ohio Atlas Studio Very Good
These are very interesting - not just because everyone looks so nice and they're sooooooo 40's, but because of the photography. What we have here is a framed duotone under glass and a loose hand-colored photo of the same wedding with the addition of the groom and groomsmen. Both photos were take by Atlas Studio of Cleveland, but, sadly, we don't know who these people are. The duotone is sealed in a leatherette frame which has a stand on the back for display. The inside image is 8"x10" and the frame is 11-1/2"x13". The color one is also 8x10", so it's easy to frame.

3 Black and White Photo John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Arthur Hunnicut (El Dorado, 1966)
Unknown 1966 Very good 8x10"
Here we have a glossy still from the 1966 Christmas release movie El Dorado. Pictured from left are Robert Mitchum who played Sheriff J.P. Harrah, Arthur Hunnicut as Bull Harris and the star, John Wayne, who played Cole Thornton. The photo is without defect and measures 8"x10". The three actors names are printed on the back by previous owner and there is a small sign of a previous price sticker. Otherwise very good.

Cabinet Card Baby in Antique Chair Broadway Photo Co. Cleveland, Ohio
4 Cabinet Card Baby in Antique Chair Broadway Photo Co. Cleveland, Ohio
Cleveland, Ohio Broadway Photo Company turn of the 20th century Cabinet card Very good
Cute little person in a very big chair. May be a rocking chair. There are no names on the back and no dates, so I'm guessing this picture was taken around the turn of the 20th century. The Broadway Photo Co. was located at 1150 Broadway, Cleveland, Ohio, but research hit a dead end from the start. The card measures 4-1/4"x6-1/2" and is very nice and clean with no wear to edges

Cabinet Card Barefoot Little Girl, Hat Basket and Gate (A.D. Ennis, Vermillion, Ohio)
5 Cabinet Card Barefoot Little Girl, Hat Basket and Gate (A.D. Ennis, Vermillion, Ohio)
Vermillion, Ohio A.D. Ennis Unknown Date Heavy card (cabinet photo) Near fine condition
There is no date on this cute picture of a little girl walking through a gate carrying a basket of goodies. She has incredibly long and thick hair, wearing a straw hat, and is barefooted. There's nothing on the back except one word printed in ink at the lower corner -- Meta. Could Meta be her name? It's sad to see a charming picture only to realize that the subject is lost in time. The photo was taken by A.D. Ennis, a photographer from Vermillion, Ohio. I have many cards with no names, but I've never yet had anyone solve a mystery.

Cabinet Card Little Girl with Flower Basket Sitting on Doorstep (Joshua Smith Studio, Chicago 1876-1886)
6 Cabinet Card Little Girl with Flower Basket Sitting on Doorstep (Joshua Smith Studio, Chicago 1876-1886)
Chicago Joshua Smith Studio Unknown Very good
Joshua Smith was no ordinary run-of-the-mill photographer who at this point in his career specialized in photographing children such as this cute little doorstep girl. In 1878 he won a coveted Silver Medal at the Paris Exhibition and in 1883 was elected president of the American Photographers Association. He also wrote many articles on chemicals and photography. There is no date on this photo, but research shows that the address on the back of it --206 North Clark Street, Chicago --was occupied by him from 1876-1886. The cabinet card is in sepia.

Cabinet Card Musician With Horn (Portsmouth, Ohio 1890)
7 Cabinet Card Musician With Horn (Portsmouth, Ohio 1890)
Portsmouth, Ohio S. Kiefer Art Studio 1890 Very Good
This is a very handsome cabinet card produced by the Art Studio of S. Kiefer of Portsmouth, Ohio. The subject is wearing a band uniform, but the only guess as to what band it was is the word on his hat. I used a magnifying glass to read "Civic" which could mean that he played in the town band. At any rate, someone penned the date on the front of the card -- October 2, 1890. The studio that made this must have been upscale, as the sides of the card are scalloped and colored in gilt. The back of the card is lovely too -- it's a shame that a former seller had placed two stickers on the back --one left a blemish to the very top and the second one is still there. The photographer offered this info, "Negatives preserved for future orders. Children's pictures a specialty. Instantaneous Process Used exclusively."

Cabinet Photo Woman in Ruffled Dress in Wicker Wheelchair (Bailey, Rochester, N.Y.)
8 Cabinet Photo Woman in Ruffled Dress in Wicker Wheelchair (Bailey, Rochester, N.Y.)
Rochester, New York Bailey Photography Unknown Date Fine condition
This photo called out to me for a couple reasons, but the first was the fact that it's so bright and light which is not often the case with photographs of the late 1800's and early 1900's. The second thing I noticed was her unusually frilly dress and then FINALLY realized that she was sitting in an elaborate wicker wheel chair. The card is marked with the photographer's name -- Bailey -- and the location is Rochester, New York. Beautiful condition. Measures 4-1/4" x 6-1/2".

Celluloid Photo Album with 26 Cabinet Photos
9 Celluloid Photo Album with 26 Cabinet Photos
Unknown location Unknown publisher Circa late 19th century, early 20th Hard cover Very good condition
The celluloid picture albums are so pretty. This one has gilded page edges, a pictorial celluloid front cover and velvet over boards at spine and back. There is also a gold clasp which works beautifully. Inside the pages (heavy cardboard) are 26 cabinet photos and none at the back for carte de visites, so you could add. The sad part is that there is no way of finding out who these people are unless someone recognizes something or someone. The album measures 8-1/2" x 10-1/2. There are two tiny chips to the front, but you can't touch them. It's as smooth there as it is all over.

10 Christie's South Kensington Leica Cameras, Cameras and Optical Toys 1996
London Christie's South Kensington 1996 Nov. 21, 1996 Card cover Near fine condition
Very handsome auction catalog with no names or writing, no spine crease, and no dog-ears. Very clean and tightly bound. It measures 8-1/4" x 10-1/2" and is lavishly illustrated with black and white photographs. The main feature is the Leicas, but the other cameras are also interesting -- top names like Rolex, Canon, Nikon and and others plus some you may not have heard of. But if you're a Leica fan the catalog is a must-have research tool.

Cleveland at Night Photograph by Mort Tucker 1984
11 Cleveland at Night Photograph by Mort Tucker 1984
Cleveland, Ohio Mort Tucker Photography 1984 Fine condition
Gorgeous photograph of downtown Cleveland at night. It appears to have never been framed, nor pasted in an album. The back is stamped Mort Tucker Photography, Cleveland, but there is no writing on it. The finish is a subdued gloss to inhibit glare and the photo itself measures 8"x10" which makes it easy to frame. The beautiful golden color is definitive and definitely catches the eye. Photo is in an envelope with its original cardboard to keep it from creasing. Former owner wrote in pencil on it "March, 1984 Mort Tucker Cleveland Landmark Photo."

Dear Old England Calendar 1952
14 Dear Old England Calendar 1952
New york Wilkinson Publishing Co. Ltd. 1951, but calendar is for 1952 Card cover Very good condition
About two decades ago when I began my business I had one of these calendars for 1951. I thought it was charming, but never again did I see one until recently. It's in nice condition too and no one pulled off any of the small monthly pages. The cover photo is printed in sepia and the big photos inside are in black and white. The cover shot is of Westminster Abbey seen from St.James's Park. Inside there are no notations or circling on any of the dates. Very nice! Would make a nice gift for someone born that year.

Four Photographs, One Drawing, The Shale Brick Company, Columbus, Ohio
16 Four Photographs, One Drawing, The Shale Brick Company, Columbus, Ohio
Columbus, Ohio Unknown origin Unknown Very good
This is a decidedly mysterious and odd item. It consists of four photographs of the former Shale Brick Company of Columbus, Ohio, plus a drawing of an auger. The drawing shows paper around the edges and old glue stain, so at least it, if not the photos too, had been affixed to something else at one time. Everything is old, but the mounting and labeling on cardstock is quite contemporary. The photos are labeled The Shale Brick Company, Columbus, Ohio 17th Avenue Brick Plant, Mixing Plant, Elevated Tressel (sic) for Cars Conveying Raw Materials to Plant, and Mixing Plant. The drawing is captioned "The auger bit forced clay through a dye in a continuous bar. Three cutters cut the bricks which were transferred to the dryers for 24 hours at 450 degrees." Research turned up very little about the company except that it was located on 17th Ave. just north of the fairgrounds, produced common brick and building tile, and a quarry was located near the plant. The photographs measure 3-1/2"x4-1/2" and the cards 4-1/2"x5". The photos are slighlty wavy from the adhesive, but are clear and clean.

Magazine is clean and nice with no label. Only faults are a small tear to outer edge of front cover repaired by me at back with non-browning archival tape and a bit of light soil to back cover. Glimpses of Greater Cleveland and Some Old Time Views (1904)
19 Glimpses of Greater Cleveland and Some Old Time Views (1904)
Cleveland, Ohio Whitworth Brothers Company 1904 soft cover Very Good
This is a surprisingly hard to find booklet, but a very attractive one. I especially like the paper it's printed on -- very satiny to the touch. This is not a history in words, but rather in captioned photographs. The booklet measures 8-3/4"x11-1/2" and has 33 counted pages showcasing 103 counted images of monuments, nature scenes, buildings, water scenes, businesses, downtown -- many views of a bustling city. Booklet is clean and tightly bound with just some wear to outer layer of paper over thin spine which in no way compromises the integrity of the binding. Overall nicely cared for.
