1949 Calendar Raymond Vietzen Archaeologist Elyria, Ohio
2 1949 Calendar Raymond Vietzen Archaeologist Elyria, Ohio
Minneapolis Shedd Brown Manufacturing 1949 Card backing Very Good condition
Raymond Vietzen was a self-taught archaeologist, founder of the Archaeological Society of Ohio, and author of many books on his excavations and its Native American artifacts. He also founded the Indian Ridge Museum in Elyria, Ohio. I have sold the books for years, but never ran across any calendars until now. The Museum opened in 1930, but on this 1949 calendar he bills himself solely as "Doctor of Motors -- Archaeologist." I bought this a couple amonths ago and later found out that I had two. I sold the first one, so this is the last. It's in nice condition with no pages ripped off and no circling of dates. The calendar measures 9-1/4" x 11". (CAL. Box I)

1971 Steam Passenger Service Directory Sixth Annual (Additional Ephemera Laid-in)
3 1971 Steam Passenger Service Directory Sixth Annual (Additional Ephemera Laid-in)
New York Empire State Railway Museum Inc. 1971 Sixth annual soft cover All items very good
This is an interesting combination of items, all in one from a previous collector. The 6th Annual Steam Passenger Service Directory of 1971 was stuffed with numerous newspaper stories about trains, primarily from the Toledo, Ohio area during the 70's. These did cause some toning to the reverse side of cover, both front and back, but I have sequestered them now in a plastic bag in which they will arrive. Also accompanying the directory are a brochure, a business card and an unused ticket, all from the Toledo Lake Erie and Western Railway, Inc. The directory measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" and has 128 page , all of which contain a black and white photograph, plus info on each train.

1978 Calendar Dance Magazine Quotes the Greats (School of Cleveland Ballet)
5 1978 Calendar Dance Magazine Quotes the Greats (School of Cleveland Ballet)
New York City Dance Magazine 1977 soft cover Fine Condition
This was an annual calendar designed and published by Dance Magazine for distribution to entities such as the School of Cleveland Ballet which could have their name printed on the final page for their own advertising. I have seen these before, but always missing at least one page. This one has all 12 and all are pristine. Each month shows a photo of a famous dancer along with a quote from each. The 1978 calendar aimed the spotlight on Alexandra Danilova, Natalia Makorova, Peter Martins, Edward Vilella, Vaslav Nijinsky, Louis Peres, Cynthia Gregory, Margot Fonteyn, Erik Bruhn, Martha Graham, Mikail Baryshnikov, and Anna Pavlova. Measures 4" x 8-3.4"

24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
7 24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
U.S.A. American Preservation Unknown date Unknown edition Disbound Articles Very Good Condition
I found these disbound articles in a box of Architectual Review Magazines which I bought at auction. I almost tossed them out until I realized how worthy they are. Each of the 24 focuses on a particular area within a state located anywhere in the country. They all derived from American Preservation magazine, so the color photographs are stunning. Each article is pretty long with many images. I wish I had more room to show them. Areas are these: New Orleans Lower Garden District; Providence, Rhode Island; Salem Massachusetts; Eutaw, Alabama's Greek Revival Architecture; Galveston, Texas; Mizner's Eden Palm Beach's Flamboyant Architecture; Brownsville, Texas; Waterford, Virginia; Helena, Montana; Columbus, Georgia; Madison, Indiana; Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Key West, Florida; Jacksonville, Oregon; Mt. Auburn in Cincinnati, Ohio; Manchester area of Pittsburgh; Savannah, Georgia; Powelton Village, Philadelphia; Saratoga Springs, New York; Crested Butte in the Rocky Mts.; Detroit's Woodward East; Oakland cemetery; Galena, Illinois and Bay View, A Summer Resort in Michigan. All are clean and stapled. Will still ship for $2 media in the U.S. as always.

8 75th Anniversary Gala Program Severance Hall, September 30, 2006 (Cleveland, Ohio)
Cleveland, Ohio Severance Hall 2006 7sth Anniversary Card cover Very good condition
Very handsome souvenir commemorating Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra. Seventy-five years of fine music is captured in these pages, including blue tinted pictures. There are many people named in the first two pages -- chairs, co-chairs, honorary committee members, gala committee, grand benefactors, benefactors, patrons, and leadership gift donors. There's also a nice section about the orchestra's summer 2006 European tour, plus a retrospective of years past. The Opening Night Gala program is listed along with a bio of Franz Welser-Most, Music Director, and more. Program measures 8-1/2" x 11-1.2" and has 24 pages. Only fault is a small bit of scratching to lower back corner next to spine. Overall quite lovely and worth keeping.

10 A Change of Place:Ohio Arts Council Artist Residencies (1997)
Columbus, Ohio Ohio Arts Council 1998 Card cover Fine condition
This is one of those Ohioana items which are new to me. It's always fun when a new one appears. This over-sized booklet traces the beginning of the residential movement for Buckeye artists in 1983 when Ohio joined the Studio Workspace Program in Long Island, New York. Next came the Headlands Center for the Arts near San Francisco in 1997. The artists in residence shown in this booklet were Gretchen Stevens Cochran, Malcolm Cochran, James Duesing, Gilda Edwards, Sean Foley, Mitchell Sanford, Karen Snouffer, Kay Willens, and Walter Zurko. 12 A New Generation Looks at Downtown Housing in Cleveland (1983)
Cleveland, Ohio Architects Society of Ohio. Cleveland Chaper American Institute of Architects 1983 Card cover Very good condition
Downtown Cleveland is the coolest place to live these days, but in 1983 when this study came out the suburbs ruled. The Architects Society of Ohio and the Cleveland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects challenged Ohio's college students at the University of Cincinnati, Kent State, Miami, and Ohio State to participate in a student design seminar. This booklet is the result. As you can see it's bound with a metal spiral and is clean and nice. Measures 8" x 10-1/2" and has 22 pages. Illustrated with colorful graphics, small photographs and architectual drawings. Not often seen.

Very nice clean, tightly bound, document bound with a plastic spiral which is still holding well. Booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" with 24 pages and both diagrams and photographs. The Exchange Hotel was the oldest standing brick structure at the time of the rennovation. it had deteriorated quite a bit after it became a rooming house and a reestaurant/night club. In July of 1977 a raging fire damaged it extensively. It's a very interesting report sprinkled with anecdotes such as Charles Dickens once checked in!

Annual Circular for the Eighth Year of the Cleveland Academy 1869-70
20 Annual Circular for the Eighth Year of the Cleveland Academy 1869-70
Cleveland, Ohio The Cleveland Academy 1869 Eighth year soft cover Good-plus condition
It's interesting that in the eighth year of the Cleveland Academy the school still sent a circular rather than a catalog to students and would-be students. The other interesting thing is that the senior and middle grade classes were populated with girls only. The junior class and the preparatory class, however, had both girls AND boys, though girls dominated. Example --the junior class had 44 girls and nine boys. Members of the graduating class were Laura Barnett, Helen P. Briggs, Fannie A. Fuller, Nettie Hall, Grace A. Kingsley, Cora Kingsley, Gussie Marchand and Ada W. Simonds. The circular shows a light skim of grayness to top front edge and an indentation to the upper fold from a paper clip. A previous owner wrote 68-9 next to the date which is 1869-70. I held it up to my magnifier and the printed date is right. A very scarce item.
