Alice (1992 Opera)
1 Alice (1992 Opera)
Hamburg, Germany Thalia Theatre 1992 soft cover Good-plus
An uncommon item, published in tandem with the opening of the dark opera, Alice, which is based on Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The lyrics probe not the story as much as how it pertains to its author. Was not intended for children. Inside front cover (see photo two) is a small drawing signed by its artist. I can't decipher the first namel, but I do believe the last name is Zinn. I immediately thought of David Zinn who does have a history with the Thalia Theatre, but I can't say for sure that this is right. Research shows no account of him having anything to do with the set design for this show. Program is written in both German and English, primarily German, and is illustrated with both black and white photos and drawings plus color plates. Measures 8"x10-1/2" and has 64 pages plus a laid-in insert with info on the songs. Clean and tightly bound with no names or writing, but does show scratches to back cover and a small bit of edge wear, also at back.

Beatrix Potter Studies II (1986)
2 Beatrix Potter Studies II (1986)
England The Beatrix Potter Society 1986 soft cover Very Good condition
What a surprise find this morning! Nine years ago I bought several full years of the newsletters of the Beatrix Potter Society and four booklets like this one filled with papers presented at the Society's Beatrix Potter Lake District Study Conference. All of it is long gone, but somehow this little straggler landed with a bunch of unrelated items. The booklet's articles re these: Lake District Natural History and Beatrix Potter; The Beatrix Potter Collection at the Free Library of Philadelphia; Collecting Beatrix Potter; Beatrix Potter Piracies and Sequels; and Bertram Potter and the Scottish Borders. Booklet is very clean and tightly bound with no names or writing. Measure 7-1/2" x 8" and has 52 pages.

Bookplate Mary Foster Nassau
3 Bookplate Mary Foster Nassau
Unknown location Unknown publisher Prior to 1884 Fine condition
This is a very attractive personalized bookplate showing what appears to be a photograph of Mary Foster Nassau and her husband, Robert Hamill Nassau, who was both an ordained Presbyterian minister and medical doctor. Mary was his second wife who accompanied him to central Africa near the Ogowe River where they, along with Robert Nassau's sister, Isabelle, served as missionaries. Mary died in 1884. Her husband retired in Pennsylvania and in 1909 wrote a book titled "The Path She Trod: A Memorial of Mary Foster Nassau." Bookplate is clean and unused and measures 3-1/2" x 4-1/2". Very nice for a collector.

Collier's Magazine: The Nation's Weekly August 19, 1933 (George Creel, Railroad Troubles, Kathleen Norris, Babe Herman)
4 Collier's Magazine: The Nation's Weekly August 19, 1933 (George Creel, Railroad Troubles, Kathleen Norris, Babe Herman)
New York P.F. Collier & Son 1933 soft cover Robert O. Reid
Striking cover art by Robert O. Reid sets the scene for August, 1933. Reid's work was frequently on the cover -- and it's no wonder why. This magazine is handsomely illustrated throughout with a nice mix of articles and fiction. The fiction writers include George Agnew Chamberlain, Stephen Morehouse Avery, Ruth Chandler Moore, Roark Bradford, and Kathleen Norris. Two articles that stoood out was one by George Creel, who was an investigative journalist and politiican who served on the U.S. Committee of Public Information, which was actually a propaganda organization started by Woodrow Wilson. In his article he addresses the problems of the railroad industry in the 30's. The other article focuses on Babe Herman, the eccentric Chicago Cubs player. Magazine is oversized at 10-1/2"x13-1/3" and is quite nice with just a few tiny edge tears. Original mailing label at bottom front cover. The recipient was from Barberton, Ohio.

Ethel Franklin Botts Fairy Print 1906
6 Ethel Franklin Botts Fairy Print 1906
Unknown 1906 Very good
This is a lovely print rendered by Ethel Franklin Botts, a student of the great Howard Pyle, as was Jessie Wilcox Smith. Her style is a bit different though with a hint of a collage look at times. She was very prolific and an important illustrator of the day. I don't know exactly what children's book this print derives from, but I do know that it's an illustration for a James Whitcomb Riley poem. The book was published in 1906. Clearly, this was a page of the book - I purchased it from a long time dealer who salvaged plates from disbound and damaged children'books. He was NOT a breaker. The print measures 6-1/2"x9-1/4" with the image measuring 5"x7-1/4". Would make a charming image for a little girl's room.

Country Woman, Dear Detroit, The Bees Are Drunk, Quick Sugar Harvest, Funeral In Frederiksted, In the Lutheran Church, and Dogs. The booklet is clean and nice other than rusting to the staples. Hearst's Magazine May, 1920 (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Howard Chandler Christy)
9 Hearst's Magazine May, 1920 (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Howard Chandler Christy)
New York, New York International Magazine Company 1920 Vol. XXXVII, No. 4 Soft cover Good-plus
Hearst Magazine was one of the most beautiful publications of the day. The cover art alone caught the readers' eyees while the huge content inside kept them reading. If you love short stories this is fiction heaven, but there's also articles too -- about J.P. Morgan's London residence, modern hotels, the DuPonts, science topics such as Luther Burbank and healthier babies and an article by West Virginia Senator David W. Elkins who opined that when it came to business, the United States Senate was 100 years behind the times. Also nice in this issue are illustrations by Howard Chandler Christy and true ghost stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Magazine is huge at 10-1/2" x 14". There's minor wear to lower edge of front cover, a few small spot of foxing at last couple pages and a small repair to top of spine with archival tape done by me. Ships for $2 in the U.S.

Seven beautiful glossy, full color postcards showing the interior and exterior of the home of American poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; a depiction of his sons, Charles and Ernest; and of his wife, the former Frances Elizabeth Appleton. The house was located at 105 Brattle Street, Cambridge Mass. and Longfellow lived in it from 1837 to 1882. The chairw as given to him as a gift on his 72nd birthday from the children of Cambridge because it was made of the chestnut wood made famous in his poem "The Village Blacksmith." The room with the fireplace was Longfellow's study. The other one with a table was the dining room, and the staircase is what he referred to as "the broad hall stair" in "The Children's Hour". Invitation 25th Anniversary Pomorean Literary Society Scio College (Ohio 1893)
12 Invitation 25th Anniversary Pomorean Literary Society Scio College (Ohio 1893)
Scio, Ohio Pomorean Literary Association Scio College 1893 Near fine
Pretty invitation professionally printed and then decorated with flowers and ribbon by hand. The invitation is one-sided and printed on heavy card stock with decorative scalloped edges on all four sides. It measures 4"x6-1/2" and is in very nice condition. I failed to find anything about the sponsoring group, but Scio College had more lives than a cat. It began as Rural Seminary, a Methodist Episcopal school, and then became New Market College named for its town, and then it was the One Study University which required students to take classes only in their major. That apparently didn't worked out that well, as they dropped the idea and named it Scio College for the town of Scio. Enrollment dropped, however, so the pharmacy department was taken over by the University of Pittsburgh and everything else merged with Mt. Union. A scarce item, but a nice find for the right person.

Jane Austen's Little Instruction Book
14 Jane Austen's Little Instruction Book
White Plains, New York Peter Pauper Press Inc. 1995 0880886935 / 9780880886932 First Edition Hard cover Very good condition Very good dust jacket
This little book is charming, the perfect gift for a literary woman. The book is divided into these themes: Women, Men, Relationships, Simple Rules and Life Lessons, each comment of which was written by Austen in one of her beloved novels. The book is small, but not a true miniature. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 6-1.4" wide with 63 pages. The book is clean and bright with no tears, chips, or creasing. The only defect, if you consider one, is a gift inscription which reads thus, "--------, with all our Aloha." I have a pretty floral bookplate laid-in for the buyer to use it or not.

Ken Magazine August 25, 1938 (Hemingway, Jack London, Germany, the Reich)
15 Ken Magazine August 25, 1938 (Hemingway, Jack London, Germany, the Reich)
Chicago Ken Inc. 1938 Vol. 2, No. 4 Soft cover Very Good
Ken magazine launched on April 7, 1938 via the founders of Esquire, but it lasted just a scant two years with two issues a month. It was political and controversial, so much so that Ernest Hemingway stopped writing for it after 14 issues. He's here in this issue though with an article titled Good Generals Hold the Line. The magazine is oversized at 10" x 13-1/2" with 86 pages. Other articles include the price of a debut for young women, Microbes Join the Army, Safe Government Broadcasting, Prelude To American Fascism, a nice article about author, Jack London, and more. Magazine is in good, clean, tightly bound condition. Two small flat creases to upper front corner and a scratch to green area on model's forehead. Very attractive overall.

Liberty Magazine Sept. 8, 1934 (Erle Stanley Gardner)
16 Liberty Magazine Sept. 8, 1934 (Erle Stanley Gardner)
New York Liberty Publishing Corporation 1934 soft cover Good
Magazine isn't perfect, but what a find to see a short story, The Case of the Curious Bride, by Erle Stanley Gardner at the very back. He's not even on the cover! But Gardner's here and the story features one of his most popular characters -- Perry Mason. It's also nicely illustrated in vintage 30's style. The other interesting note is a rebuttal about women's intelligence by the novelist Kathleen Norris. The magazine is clean and tightly bound but shows small chips to bottom edge and a few tiny edge tears to outer side edges which I have repaired with very small pieces of invisible archival tape. Pages have toned evenly, but there is some foxing to the outer side edge of the front cover. Magazine measures 8-1/2"x11" and has 62 pages.

McCall's Magazine November, 1940 (Ku Klux Klan, Lenore Mattingly Weber)
17 McCall's Magazine November, 1940 (Ku Klux Klan, Lenore Mattingly Weber)
New York McCall Corporation 1940
Did you grow up reading the Beany Malone books? If so, the author, Lenore Mattingly Weber, is in this issue with a short story. Her name jumped right off the cover for me! Other items of interest are an article about the actvities of the Ku Klux Klan, a story by John P. Marquand, and preparations for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Oh, and of course those elegant fashion plates. The magazine is clean and tightly bound with a small tear to top and bottom of spine, both of which I repaired with almost invisible archival tape. Other than that there's a few tiny bits of edge wear and mild soil to light portions of front and back. I did, however, clean it with a document pad. The magazine is oversized at 11" x 13-3/4" and has 146 pages. Shios for $2 in the U.S.

Munsey Magazine January 1896
18 Munsey Magazine January 1896
New York Frank A. Munsey 1896 soft cover Very Good
It's interesting how Munsey Magazine had a HUGE circulation and yet it's less well known than Century, Harper's and Frank Leslie's. I just got six issues though so am happy as a clam. Before I tell you about this one though here's a fun fact about Munsey -- it was considered a bit racy and some stores would not stock it due to its "undressed women and undressed statuary." This issue is clean and tightly bound. A previous owner trimmed off the overhang (known as yapped edges) -- a common reaction after they acquire a million small tears. Great ads, fiction and articles await. The most signifiant article is one about sculptor James E. Kelly entitled Sculptor of American History. Among Kelly's accomplishments are Sheridan's Ride and the Buford Monument at Gettysburg. Also of interest is a journey through Europe following the footsteps of the poet Lord Byron. Much discussion of popular culture too with photos of big names in the arts.

Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, 1966 Moving the Library Company. Shirley Jackson Chronology)
19 Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, 1966 Moving the Library Company. Shirley Jackson Chronology)
New York City Bibliographical Society of America Second Quarter, 1966 Volume Sixty soft cover Near fine condition
Very handsome journal of interest to book lovers with extra ephemera laid-in. There's lots to read here, but I think the hands-down most interesting article is the one about moving The Library Company of Philadelphia, a 235 year-old establishment which contained 235,000 volumes! How they did it is fascinating and there are wonderful photos (see pictures). Some of the other stories of note are The Identification of Type Faces in Bibliographical Description and Shirley Jackson: A Chronology and Supplementary Checklist. Inside the front cover you will find a leaflet about the Society's Autumn Meeting with information on four sides, plus an unused list of itinerary items to choose if interested. Journal measures 6-1/4" x 9-1/4" with 129 pages. Only fault is a tiny stain to bottom of front cover. Otherwise pristine.
