30 Postcards G. F. Castleden New Orleans Sketches (1924-1929)
3 30 Postcards G. F. Castleden New Orleans Sketches (1924-1929)
New Orlean, LA G.F. Castleden 1924-1929 Fine in Very Good Envelopes
These are a lovely find if you are enchanted by the architecture of New Orleans. I've never seen this many in one place ever, but I got them from the estate of a Castleden collector. Castleden was a British artist who emigrated to New Orleans and continued his career as an artist there. The cards were aimed at the tourist trade -- ten scenes for a quarter. Three of the original envelopes will accompany them, but the cards weren't in them, so I am uncertain which belong where. The scenes are Old World beautiful and include, but are not confined to, these subjects: Pirate Alley, the monastery of the Capuchian monks, the staircase of the old St. Louis Hotel, the courtyard of the old Spanish Arsenal, oyster schooners, the Spanish Gate of Cabildo, the Courtyard of the Little Theatre, and the Little Green Shutter Tea Room. None have been used and all are in excellent condition. The envelopes are a little worn, but not bad. The photo shows an array of cards, but not all -- there really are thirty!

George Washington Postcards by Merrimack (3)
8 George Washington Postcards by Merrimack (3)
New York Merrimack Publishing No date Card stock Very good condition, unused 1 set
I bought these postcards from a history buff who particularly took interest in the life of George Washington. The three cards are from series No. 2320 and all show various amounts of metallic flair. The first one shows an image of Washington next to the White House and at the lower right corner he is named "Washington, The Father of the Country." The second card is clearly an emotional moment when Washingon took leave of his officers, hence why he was ebracing one. The third card is Washignton astride his white horse. The writing at top reads "First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen." All cards are also embossed as you can see fom the backs. The cards will arive in brand new plastic sleeves.

The house was located at 105 Brattle Street, Cambridge Mass. and Longfellow lived in it from 1837 to 1882. The chairw as given to him as a gift on his 72nd birthday from the children of Cambridge because it was made of the chestnut wood made famous in his poem "The Village Blacksmith." The room with the fireplace was Longfellow's study. The other one with a table was the dining room, and the staircase is what he referred to as "the broad hall stair" in "The Children's Hour". The cards not used and show only faint toning to backs. All will arrive in plastic sleeves. A nice little gift for the right person.

Language of Flowers Postcard Series; Violet, Lily, Sweet Pea, three cards)
10 Language of Flowers Postcard Series; Violet, Lily, Sweet Pea, three cards)
Unknown Very good
This is a charming postcard series titled the Language of Flowers. From it we have three cards numbered 555, 556, and 563. None have been postally used. There is no date on any, but two of the three came from the same recipient (we have many of hers) and her dated cards range all from 1906 to 1914. The floweres are identified in the upper right corner along with their meaning in the language of flowers. These include violet,"faithfulness"; lily, "peace"; and sweet pea, "wish you joy." The lily card is addressed in pencil to Sophie Nundahl, Perry North Dakota with this message, "Haven't any more Easter greetings, so will have to send you this one. Clarence." The violet card just has Sophie's name and the words "from 13-3", which may be March, 1913 which makes sense if it, too, was an Easter card. The lily card was addressed to Emmett Olson, Frazer, Minnesota.

new York ArtVue Post Card Co. 1940's Fine
Here we have nine vintage postcards from the 40's which were not used at all -- no writing, no postage, and very crisp and clean. Black and white photography captures the colonial feel of the period furniture and appointments of rooms in the museum which once served as actual barracks for about 300 men each. This is the last of the five authorized by the colony in 1758. It became a museum in 1914 and continues operation today. Postcard scenes include: Broad Seal Chapter Room; Sons of the Revolution Room, the Armory, the Favid Forman Vhapter Room, the Auditoreum, the Recption Hall, the General Mercer Chapter Room, the Trent Chapter Room, and the General Washington Chapter Room.

13 Port Columbus International Airport 75th Anniversary 1929-2004 (postcards)
Columbus, Ohio Port Columbus 2004 75th Anniversary Card cover Fine cards in VG folder
I haven't been aware of this postcard set, but I knew a good thing when I found it! There are ten postcards printed with black and white photographs and a blue "frame" on each. The cards are a tad larger than usual, measuring 4-1/2" x 6". All are crisp and clean with no writing or postal stampings. Port Columbus opened on July 8, 1929 with Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone and Edsel Ford in the audience. The folders (there are two) are crisp and clean also, but there is a tiny tear to the right side of the main folder. I used a very tiny piece of archival tape on the reverse side and all is well. A very nice souvenir.
