4 C& C Originals Square Dance Dress 114 Size 6-8-10 (Uncut)
Harrison, Arkansas C & C Unknown Very good
I don't buy too many patterns, but every once in awhile ... This one is for a square dance dress with a fancy bodice that flows down to the eight gore skirt. The instructions and pattern pieces are crisp and unused. They also retain their factory folds. Della Lidia Merletti d'Arte (Italian lace)
6 Della Lidia Merletti d'Arte (Italian lace)
Burano, Venice Italy Della Lidia Merletti d'Arte No date Card cover Near fine condition
There is no date on this one that I can see, but it appears to be contemporary -- likely early 2000's. The handmade lace is exquisite and the booklet shows it making itss way from the designer's pencil to the needles used by the women who create the gossamer fabric to the marketplace. the intricate lace turns into dresses, collars, tablecloths, runners, bridal veils, pillows, curtains, shawls and altar coverings. Every page is a discovery and many pop with colorful backgrounds. Text is in Italian, French, German, and English. Booklet measures 8"x 11-1/2" and is very clean and tightly bound. Only fault is a small scratch to front cover.

London, U.S.A. etc. Ehrman Tapestry 1992 soft cover Very good condition
Ehrman's Tapestry is so gorgeous -- the photographs are nothing short of voluptuous. Flowers, foliage, birds, beasts, pictures and patterns ,and fruits and vegetables all come together to create designs of beauty and a catalog to keep even when the new comes out. The catalog measures 8-1/2" x 11" with 64 pages. The price list remains inside and shows prices from $25 to $2845 for two different large carpets -- apples and cabbages and a Georgian carpet. Grandmother Clark's How to Make Hand Made Crocheted Rag Rugs (1933)
8 Grandmother Clark's How to Make Hand Made Crocheted Rag Rugs (1933)
St. Louis, Missouri W.L.M. Clark 1933 Book No. 24 soft cover Good condition
The paper cover is rather lightweight on this catalog, so it's no wonder it was a little loose. I re-enforced it with archival tape alongside the spine at the right hand side of the picture. It hardly shows. The catalog has fifteen pages in color and offers instructions. Crafters could buy kits with everything needed to make the ship rug (see photo) and other attractive designs. The catalog measures 8" tall and 11" wide and has 16 pages of info including the back cover.

Harper's Bazar December 15, 1988 (Embroidery, Fashion)
9 Harper's Bazar December 15, 1988 (Embroidery, Fashion)
Harper Brothers 1888 Vol. XXI No. 50 soft cover Very good
Though this is actually a magazine, it's printed in newspaper fashion and yet remains remarkably good. There are few tiny edge tears and a chip from the side of page one, but I have been able to mend all tears at folds with non-browning archival tape which is nearly invisible. When opened the magazine measures 12"x16-1/2". The two brown stickers on the face are the mailing labels to De Soto, Missouri. This is the Christmas issue so there are holiday stories, but also an article about embroideries at the London Arts and Crafts Exhibition as well as two pages devoted to embroidery patterns. There's also an article about fashions from New York and a page of art showing them.

15 L. Stockman & Son Needlework Catalog and Instruction Book No. 20 (1925)
New York, New York L. Stockman & Son 1925 soft cover Very good
Very handsome catalog from a company which billed itself as "New York City's Pioneer and Leading Art Needlework Shop." It measures 7"x10" and has 31 pages. The attractive purple and cream cover is repeated inside with purple print and purple art throughout. It appears that the company sold finished items stamped with an embroidery design for the customer to complete. Among the items offered are pillow tops, laundry bags, silverware holders, curtains and valances, towels, luncheon sets, children's clothes, kimonos, aprons, bedspreads, dresses, crocheted bags, pillow cases and more. Very clean and nice with just a hint of having been folded in half.

McCall Kaumagraph Transfer Pattern No. 1308 Design for Braiding (Embroidery)
17 McCall Kaumagraph Transfer Pattern No. 1308 Design for Braiding (Embroidery)
Unknown McCall Unknown Very Good
Though called a design for braiding, this is actually an embroidery transfer. There is no date on it, but I got it with a lot of other sewing items which were dated in the 1920's, so it's likely this comes from the same era. What's interesting about is that the design came in either yellow or blue ink. This one's a yellow, so if for some reason the buyer changed her mind about it she could remove it from wool or silk by rubbing with benzene, gasoline or carbona! The design is transferred with an iron and full instructions are on the back. Even unused it'a cool novelty for a sewing collection.

McCall's Magazine January 1914 (Fashion Plates)
18 McCall's Magazine January 1914 (Fashion Plates)
New York The McCall Company 1914 Vol. XLI No. 5 soft cover
I love, love, LOVE these early issues of McCalls. I had some more, but sold them all at the Cleveland Book and Paper show last fall and now I'm down to just this one. But this one is a pretty thing indeed, especially those pages of fashion plates (see photo two). The format was smaller in those days, so this magazine measures just 8"x11", nowhere near the size it grew to later, especially during the 30's. Even in the early days McCall's kept true to form with articles on housekeeping, sewing, fashion, and ways for women to make money (in this issue it's millinery and hostessing). Other features are children, food and cooking, and fiction. Very attractive lay-out and lots of fun ads. One is for Postum, the coffee substitute, and is displayed in full color on the back cover.

Modern Priscilla Magazine September, 1918
20 Modern Priscilla Magazine September, 1918
Boston, Mass. Priscilla Publishing 1918 soft cover Very good
The covers of Priscilla magazine are really sensational, but I think this one by Ronald Anderson may be my favorite to date. What a strong, bold graphic and such a pleasing vignette it portrays. As always, Priscilla is about needlework primarily, but these wartime issues don't flinch from reality either. It's all about making do and still making fine things, as well as service to one's country. It's quite large at 10"x14" and is clean and crisp. No mailing label, but it has been folded vertically for insertion in mailbox. I have ironed it and put it in the book press and it now lays flat. Issue contains two especially fine full page ads -- one for Congoleum "rugs" and one for Colgate Talc Powder.
