Chapter Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild Complete Paper Cutout for Petite Napoleon Coach
4 Chapter Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild Complete Paper Cutout for Petite Napoleon Coach
Detroit, michigan Fisher Body Craftaman's Guild No date stated Card pieces, paper envelope Very good condition in good envelope
This is an interesting item, published for a contest which was advertised around the world. In the U.S. the kit was sent via the local newspapers, in this case the Detroit Times. Oddly, there is no year stated, so I did some research and found a 1932 Syracuse, New York newspaper story about the contest. Then envelope had many small tears, so I taped the edges to stabilize it. Inside here is a card about the contest itself, another one with intricate instructions and four large cards with many, many, many pieces to assemble. The sad part is, though not surprising, only boys were allowed to compete for college scholarships and money. Not only did they mention it, but they mentioned it many times. Even the application reads "Boy's Name." Nonetheless this project is a gem of paper engineering. The envelope measures 13-1/2" x 18-1/2" and all items fit inside. Take a look on Google and see the beautiful examples in full color.

6 Felt, Silk & Straw Handmade Hats: Tools and Processes
Doylestown, PA The Bucks County Historical Society 1977 soft cover Fine
Crisp, clean booklet, almost like new. We have sold many of these over the years and I still like it as much as ever. If you're interested in haberdashery, or just old skills, this is one great booklet. It measures 8-1/2"x11" and 24 packed pages. illustrated throughout with both photos and instructional drawings. It's part of the Tools of the Nation Series. Discusses all aspects of the handmade hat, plus extensive notations and bibliography at back 24 pages. We used to have lot of other titles from the series, but now just have three -- this one, one about butter making, and one about Pennsylvania pottery. If I haven't listed the other two by the time you see this listing just shoot me an email and I will be happy to put it up for you.

Grandmother Clark's How to Make Hand Made Crocheted Rag Rugs (1933)
8 Grandmother Clark's How to Make Hand Made Crocheted Rag Rugs (1933)
St. Louis, Missouri W.L.M. Clark 1933 Book No. 24 soft cover Good condition
The paper cover is rather lightweight on this catalog, so it's no wonder it was a little loose. I re-enforced it with archival tape alongside the spine at the right hand side of the picture. It hardly shows. The catalog has fifteen pages in color and offers instructions. Crafters could buy kits with everything needed to make the ship rug (see photo) and other attractive designs. The catalog measures 8" tall and 11" wide and has 16 pages of info including the back cover.

This is a very cool thing! I have one but I kept it and now found another which is a bit nicer. This booklet is absolutely pristine. Included in this item are a color harmony wheel, a color identification chart, flesh color mixing chart, and double primaries palette chart. Harper's Bazar December 15, 1988 (Embroidery, Fashion)
10 Harper's Bazar December 15, 1988 (Embroidery, Fashion)
Harper Brothers 1888 Vol. XXI No. 50 soft cover Very good
Though this is actually a magazine, it's printed in newspaper fashion and yet remains remarkably good. There are few tiny edge tears and a chip from the side of page one, but I have been able to mend all tears at folds with non-browning archival tape which is nearly invisible. When opened the magazine measures 12"x16-1/2". The two brown stickers on the face are the mailing labels to De Soto, Missouri. This is the Christmas issue so there are holiday stories, but also an article about embroideries at the London Arts and Crafts Exhibition as well as two pages devoted to embroidery patterns. There's also an article about fashions from New York and a page of art showing them.

House Beautiful Magazine October, 1928
12 House Beautiful Magazine October, 1928
Concord, New Hmapshire House Beautiful Publishing Corporation Vol. LXIV, No. IV soft cover Very Good condition
The cover art of these magazines scream "come hither!" They're bold, colorful and graphically sensational. I was at an auction which had six boxes of them.To say they were a hit is an understatement -- they sold in a frenzy for more money than they should have. I got the last box, which was as good as the rest, but at the end of the frenzy. There's much to read here about homes and gardens with gorgeous full color ads for house items -- roofs, tiles, paints etc.. One of the more interesting stories is about the scissor craft of silhouette making and William Henry Brown who long ago snipped out beautiful images. Other articles cover peony walks, Holland bulbs, wisteria, Pompeiian gardens, house renovations, a well appointed desk, china services on display in Paris, architecture, stone versus stone masonry and much more. The magazine is oversized at 10" x 12-1/2" and is an inch thick. SHIPS FOR $2 IN THE U.S.

How To Decorate Halls, Booths and Automobiles (1927)
13 How To Decorate Halls, Booths and Automobiles (1927)
Framingham, Massachusetts Dennison Manufacturing Company 1927 later printing Soft over Fine condition
Crepe paper has long been synonymous with life's festive events and no one knew the business as well as the Dennison Manufacturing Company which set up shop in Framingham in 1897. Although the company merged with Avery in 1990, there was a time when the railroad that ran in front of its red brick buildings groaned under a heavy load of crepe paper in a rainbow of colors. This booklet uses strong graphic drawings to unveil a a parade of great ideas. It's clean and bright inside and out with no names or writing. Measures 5-3/4" x 8-1/4 and has 36 pages.

L. Stockman & Son Needlework Catalog and Instruction Book No. 20 (1925)
15 L. Stockman & Son Needlework Catalog and Instruction Book No. 20 (1925)
New York, New York L. Stockman & Son 1925 soft cover Very good
Very handsome catalog from a company which billed itself as "New York City's Pioneer and Leading Art Needlework Shop." It measures 7"x10" and has 31 pages. The attractive purple and cream cover is repeated inside with purple print and purple art throughout. It appears that the company sold finished items stamped with an embroidery design for the customer to complete. Among the items offered are pillow tops, laundry bags, silverware holders, curtains and valances, towels, luncheon sets, children's clothes, kimonos, aprons, bedspreads, dresses, crocheted bags, pillow cases and more. Very clean and nice with just a hint of having been folded in half.

Lone Scouts of America: First Degree, Second Degree, Third Degree, Fourth Degree (circa 1915-1924)
16 Lone Scouts of America: First Degree, Second Degree, Third Degree, Fourth Degree (circa 1915-1924)
Chicago Lone Scouts of America circa 1915-24 soft cover Good Condition
These four booklets taught young boys all manner of subjects -- first aid, Indian crafts, natural history, astronomy and more. The Lone Scouts were loosely organized, as membership did not hinge on adult leadership. Many kids lived in rural areas and were truly lone scouts. All you had to do was sign up through the mail and you could obtain the various publications and other items. In 1924, however, the loners merged with the Boy Scouts. The strong Native American influence was that of the works of Ernest Thompson Seton. Booklets measure 4" x 6" and have a cumulative 223 page count. Booklets are clean and tightly bound, but have been used and have minor faults, but nothing egregious. There's also included two advertising pieces from the Lone Scouts, one of which is a letter and a page on how to win badges and medals, and a magazine subscription form. The other is an application to join. There is some browning to the letter which had been placed against the back of the front cover of Volume 1. I have sequestered the advertising in a cello bag and will send it as such with the booklets..

McCall Kaumagraph Transfer Pattern No. 1308 Design for Braiding (Embroidery)
18 McCall Kaumagraph Transfer Pattern No. 1308 Design for Braiding (Embroidery)
Unknown McCall Unknown Very Good
Though called a design for braiding, this is actually an embroidery transfer. There is no date on it, but I got it with a lot of other sewing items which were dated in the 1920's, so it's likely this comes from the same era. What's interesting about is that the design came in either yellow or blue ink. This one's a yellow, so if for some reason the buyer changed her mind about it she could remove it from wool or silk by rubbing with benzene, gasoline or carbona! The design is transferred with an iron and full instructions are on the back. Even unused it'a cool novelty for a sewing collection.

Metal Craft Supply Company Catalog (1948)
19 Metal Craft Supply Company Catalog (1948)
Providence, Rhode Island Metal Crafts Supply Company 1948 Card cover Good condition
Very nice catalog -- clean and bright inside with no names or writing. There's a few spots of edge wear and rubbing to edges at back, and darkening at spine, but overall it's quite good with a tight binding. The company provided equipment and supplies for brass, pewter, aluminum, silver and copper work. Items included are metals in sheet and wire form, hammers, mallets, anvils, solders, enamels, stones, findings, and etching and polishing materials. Many black and white photos and drawings. VERY attractive!
