All About Hawaii; Thrum's Hawaiian Annual 1950
1 All About Hawaii; Thrum's Hawaiian Annual 1950
Honolulu Hawaii Honolulu Star Bulletin 1950 Diamond Jubilee Edition soft cover
This is a book, yes, but it's an ephemeral one because it's sort of like the phone book -- you can get a new one every year! This one's nice because it commemorates Hawaii's Diamond Jubilee and precedes its statehood. The front sections has a lot of Hawaiian history and there is much info later on the various island and the sugar and pineapple industries. There is also some tourist info and ads for hotels and restaurants, but this is really about what Hawaii was like at mid-century. Photo illustrated in black and white. the book measures 5"x7" and has 352 pages. The only fault is wear to the very bottom of the spine with a small loss of paper at both edges. Otherwise it's tightly bound and clean as whistle inside and out. 352 pages.

Menu Wagon Wheel Waikiki's Unique Garden Restaruant (1945)
2 Menu Wagon Wheel Waikiki's Unique Garden Restaruant (1945)
Waikiki, Hawaii Wagon Wheel Restaurant 1945 Card cover Good condition
This restaurant has long been closed, but it was managed by Sally Close (how ironic) in 1945. Oddly, the food could be served in the Midwest with the exception of alligator pears and papaya. Roast leg of lamb with guava jelly was $1.35, one of the two most expensive entrees on the list. There doesn't seem to be a wine list even though it's a dinner menu. Dinner, however, was served from noon to 8:30 p.m.The menu needed some TLC, so I repaired three tears on the reverse side. The menu itself had been stapled badly so that part of it hung out the side. So I took off the staple, ironed the cresae and restabled. A nice collectible of Hawaii past.

Arts & Decoration Combined With The Spur December, 1940, Adams, Harry S. (editor)
7 Adams, Harry S. (editor) Arts & Decoration Combined With The Spur December, 1940
Stroudsburg, PA Artspur Publications Inc. 1940 Volume LIII, Number 1 soft cover Very good
This issue represents post glory days for the Spur Magazine which during the Depression never flinched at hard times. It was all about the good life and so it still is here, but the format has changed and it's double billing on the masthead. The format is different too -- the size is smaller at 10"x12-1/2" and no longer shows beautiful photos of debutantes and society brides. The old theme is still there though with talk of homes in Honolulu, a New York penthouse, getting the most out of horseback riding, ski vacations, skeet shooting, thoroughbred poodles and contemporary furniture. Magazine is clean and tightly bound with no mailing label. Articles are in black and white, but there are color ads for Plymouth and Four Roses whiskey.

The bright, colorful cover on this in-flight menu reminds us how all those niceties from 1983 are gone. Laid-in are two partially filled out questionnaire provided by the Hawaii Visitors Bureau. All tiems are crisp and clean. Menu measures 7-12" x 11-1/4" and is SIGNED by the chef.

Ken Magazine May 5, 1938. Spanish Children Refugees.Nazi Propaganda Industry, Hemingway, Ernest
9 Hemingway, Ernest Ken Magazine May 5, 1938. Spanish Children Refugees.Nazi Propaganda Industry
Chicago, Ilinois Ken Inc. 1938 Vol. 1 No. 3 Soft cover Fine condition
This magazine is so clean, tightly bound, beautifully kept and has 29 full pages of photographs. the one that caught my eyes was the group of Catholic religious men. Most stood as normal while several did the Hitler salute (see photo). Among the many stories there's these: British sailors caring for 35 Spanish refugee orphans as cargo in a boat; How Hitler Conquered England; The Nazi Propaganda Industry; Molokai's sanitary leper island and more. The magazine measures 10-1/2" x 1-1/2" and has 106 pages.

Kirtland, Ohio Self-published 1996 Fall, 1996 Card cover Very good condition
Other than a flat crease to lower back corner, this is a very nice magazine which tells stories of WWII from the point of view of the Catholic priest who launched it. This issue covers Father Kinkopf's return to the place of his deployment during he Battle of Midway; the world of the lepers on Molokai; and the men of the Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy "still entombed in the U.S.S. Arizona which sunk." Journal is augmented with black and white photographs and measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2". 48 pages. (HISTORY3)

The Spur Magazine May, 1939 (Kentucky Derby, Lei Day in Hawaii, New Bedford Fishing), Krows, Arthur Edwin (editor)
11 Krows, Arthur Edwin (editor) The Spur Magazine May, 1939 (Kentucky Derby, Lei Day in Hawaii, New Bedford Fishing)
New York City The Angus Company 1939 Volume 63 No. 5 soft cover Very Good condition
This is the last year of the Spur's tall format. In 1940 everything changed. Already this one from 1939 was down to a monthly, rather than a twice a month publication. but it still bills itself as "A Magazine of the Good Things in Life." There are some good things here too -- there's big articles about the Kentucky Derby, Lei Day in Hawaii, and the ever-growing sight of fishing ships in New Bedford. There's also society stories, a piece on Shirley Temple, dogs, fox hunting and more. The color ads include Packard, Lincoln Zephyr, Grace Line Caribbean-South American Cruises. Magazine measures 10" x 14" and has 64 pages.
