Albert W. Smith Educator, Chemist and Engineer (Case Western Reserve University)
1 Albert W. Smith Educator, Chemist and Engineer (Case Western Reserve University)
Cleveland, Ohio Case Western Reserve University Unknown Date Card cover Near fine
This is one of the most elegant booklets I've ever seen. The cover is made of substantial cardstock with raised letters at front, acetate endpapers both front and back, quality coated paper, and excellent black and white historic photographs, plus facsimiles of documents. The subject, Albert W. Smith, was part of small coterie of scientists who worked to found the profession of Chemical Engineering and in doing so put Case Institute of Technology as it as called then, on the educational map.The booklet measures 8-1/2"x11" and has 39 pages.

American Photography, November 1932
2 American Photography, November 1932
Boston, MA American Photographic Publishing Co. 1933 Vol. XXVII, No. 11 soft cover Very good
This is a wonderful look at photographic history. It's not a magazine for the casual Kodak owner, but a serious look at photographic technology as it was in 1933. Articles cover exposure and development; photographic Christmas cards with hand-drawn borders; development with paraphenylenediamine; aerial photography with a rebuilt reflecting camera; the photographic translation of color into monochrome; telephoto pictures and infra red plates and much more. Lots to read. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Many ads too for photographic equipment. Magazine is clean and tightly bound. Measures 7" x 9-3/4". Only fault is light toning to back cover. See last photo.

4 Cinefex: The Journal of Cinematic Illusions No. 67 September 1996 (Independence Day, The Nutty Professor, Pinocchio)
Riverside, California Don Shay 1996 soft cover Very Good
Very handsome magazine, a quarterly devoted to the technology and artistry behind the movies we love. The big story in this one is terrific, as it offers many pages of text and color photographs which explain the pyrotechnics of the film, Independence Day. How they made The Nutty Professor is also fun, as is the puppetmasters of Pinocchio and even a commercial -- Nikes Eyes on the Ball ad. Magazine measures 8"x9" and has 154 pages on quality coated paper

Engineering News and American Contract Journal April, 1887
10 Engineering News and American Contract Journal April, 1887
New York Engineering News Publishing Company 1887 Vol. XVIII, No. 17 soft cover Very Good
It's not common to find an example of this early technical magazine and especially not in such nice condition. There is a small bit of soiling to outer edge of front cover, but it is otherwise very handsome. Oversized at 11" across by 14" tall. Numerous ads at front and back with bold graphics showing various pumps, pipes, derricks, engineering and surveying equipment, fire hydrants, valves. etc.. Even submarine tunnels and early steam shovels. A sampling of articles include the following topics: a landslide on the New York, Central & Hudson Railroad, the foundation for the 1000-ft. Eiffel tower in Paris, and the proposed Long Island Bridge. Technical drawings throughout. Magazine begins pagination where the previous issue left off, but we counted 15 pages of dense text, plus 25 pages of ads.

Fortune Magazine December 1934 (Illuminated Manuscripts, Steinway Pianos, The Diesel Engine)
11 Fortune Magazine December 1934 (Illuminated Manuscripts, Steinway Pianos, The Diesel Engine)
New York Time-Life 1934 Volume X, Number 6 soft cover Very Good condition
The Christmas issue of Fortune Magazine always sported a particularly beautiful cover. What adds to the impression though is the size of the magazine at 11-1/2" x 14". Everything is clean and nice, but there are a few defects -- a few small isolated spots of edge wear to cover, a small bit of foxing to bottom of contents page (see photo) and a bit of the same to the spine side of back cover (again, see photo). The articles this time include: Washington D.C., The Federal Budget (A Guide to U.S. Spending), The Dutch Throne, DuPont, Illuminated Manuscripts, The House of Steinway (pianos), and The Diesel Engine. Ships for $2 in the U.S.. OVERSEAS ORDERS WELCOME, but may be expensive. Please contact us with destination and I will provide an exact quote.

Chicago Laird and Lee Publishers 1904 Hard cover Good condition
This souvenir book commemorates the Lousiana Exposition of 1904 with two hundred photos including 32 colorgraph views and 188 copperplate scenes. Every picture is full page with descriptions beneath. The book measures 5-1/2" x 6-3/4" and has clean and tightly bound pages. I cleaned the blue boards and improved them quite a bit, but there's still some small areas of stubborn soil. Hearst's Magazine May, 1920 (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Howard Chandler Christy)
14 Hearst's Magazine May, 1920 (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Howard Chandler Christy)
New York, New York International Magazine Company 1920 Vol. XXXVII, No. 4 Soft cover Good-plus
Hearst Magazine was one of the most beautiful publications of the day. The cover art alone caught the readers' eyees while the huge content inside kept them reading. If you love short stories this is fiction heaven, but there's also articles too -- about J.P. Morgan's London residence, modern hotels, the DuPonts, science topics such as Luther Burbank and healthier babies and an article by West Virginia Senator David W. Elkins who opined that when it came to business, the United States Senate was 100 years behind the times. Also nice in this issue are illustrations by Howard Chandler Christy and true ghost stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Magazine is huge at 10-1/2" x 14". There's minor wear to lower edge of front cover, a few small spot of foxing at last couple pages and a small repair to top of spine with archival tape done by me. Ships for $2 in the U.S.

Cleveland, Ohio Case Western Reserve University 1987 Card cover Very good condition
This is an interesting find -- a booklet which discusses the one hundredth anniversary of the Michelson-Morley Experiment, but is also a commemorative program. The work of Albert Abraham Michelson and Edward Williams Morley laid the path into modern physics. Later, a young Albert Einstein developed the resolution to the puzzle posed by the experiment. In 1905 he published the paper that outlined his Theory of Relativity. The booklet includes congratulatory letters at the front, including one from President Ronald Reagan, followed by the events to mark the commemoration and photographs and information about Michelson and Morley's project.
