1 "There's A Reason"; A Journey Through the Factories That Make Postum, Grape Nuts and Post Toasties (post-1914)
Battle Creek, Michigan Postum Cereal Company After 1914 Hard Cover Good-plus No Dustjacket as issued
This is an amazing little book published after the death of C.W. Post, the founder of the Postum Cereal Company which produced Grape Nuts and Post Toasties as well as the coffee substitute, Postum. From 1905 until his death in 1914 C.W. sued, was sued, and gained a reputation as a charlatan who worked overtime making bogus health claims against caffeine. He also came up with what was called a mysterious slogan for his breakfast beverage "There's a reason ...", thus the title of the book. Great pictures abound in here -- the ones at the front in color show such things at Post's private office. Most photos, however, are of the plant and people at work making the products with help from mighty machinery. Book measures 7-1/2" x 9" and has 47 pages. It's tightly bound with clean pages and no writing. Faults are exterior -- a few little stains and a few tiny spots of edge wear to the green border around the cover picture. Overall quite good. It's puffery of course, but fun puffery!

Advertising Blotter Willard Battery Storage (Cleveland, Ohio, 1917)
4 Advertising Blotter Willard Battery Storage (Cleveland, Ohio, 1917)
St. Paul, Minnesota B&B 1917 Near fine condition
The colorful scene of a sportsman in a boat in what looks like a marshy area made me think this blotter might be newer than it is. I got out my magnifying glass and there it was though -- a 1917 date. The Willard Battery Storage company was founded in Cleveland in 1896 by Theodore Willard. It stayed the course al the way through WWII, but finally changed hands in 1952. As you can see, there's another comapany name on the blotter, the St. Thomas Storage Battery Company, but here's why. Under the phone number of St, Thomas it reads, "All Makes of Batteries Repaired. Authorized Willard Service Station for Elgin County.

This is a wonderful wartime report from Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing covering all aspects of the business including power generation; power distribution; processing items such as metals, coal, rock products, cement, forest products, petroleum, rubber, chemicals, food, and solvent oil; industrial; construction and agriculture; and transportation. The book is over-sized at 8-1/2"x 11" and has 80 pages. Minor small horizontal creases to spine, likely endemic to the publishing process, but otherwise clean and tightly bound. Fortune Magazine July, 1935 (Anheiser-Busch, Women In Business, Restoring Williamsburg, U.S. Smelting & Refining)
10 Fortune Magazine July, 1935 (Anheiser-Busch, Women In Business, Restoring Williamsburg, U.S. Smelting & Refining)
New York Time-Life 1935 Volume XII, No. 1 soft cover Very good
Very clean, nice issue of one of the star magazines of the 30's. The photography is excellent, as are the articles and the magazine's design. Three topics grabbed my attention -- a colorful piece about Anheiser-Busch and its bottled beer, Part I of a story about women in business, and a look at Mr. Rockefeller's renovation of colonial Willamsburg. There's also a piece about the cotton industry, one on U.S. Smelting & Refining and a profile of Harry Hopkins. Magazine has no real defect of note. It measures 11-1/2"x14" and has 140 pages. OVERSEAS ORDERS WELCOME, but shipping may be higher than stated due to size. Contact me with destination for actual quote.

Fortune Magazine, November, 1938 (Saks Fifth Avenue)
11 Fortune Magazine, November, 1938 (Saks Fifth Avenue)
New York city Time Inc. 1938 Volume XVIII, No. 5 soft cover Very good condition
There's lots to read about in this over-sized magazine, but I think the most provactive is the story about Saks Fifth Avenue, which to this day keeps the population fashionable. Other topics of interest are: The Industrial South; Nunn-Bush and labor; the adventures of Del Monte; energy sources, including solar; and a look at the American Medical Association. Magazine is big at 11-1/2" x 14" with 174 pages. It's clean inside and out with just minor spots of edge wear to cover, but overall is really very nice. We have others listed online here, but also have a stack that are not on yet. So if you're looking for a specific example please let me know and I'll see what I have.

Four Photographs, One Drawing, The Shale Brick Company, Columbus, Ohio
13 Four Photographs, One Drawing, The Shale Brick Company, Columbus, Ohio
Columbus, Ohio Unknown origin Unknown Very good
This is a decidedly mysterious and odd item. It consists of four photographs of the former Shale Brick Company of Columbus, Ohio, plus a drawing of an auger. The drawing shows paper around the edges and old glue stain, so at least it, if not the photos too, had been affixed to something else at one time. Everything is old, but the mounting and labeling on cardstock is quite contemporary. The photos are labeled The Shale Brick Company, Columbus, Ohio 17th Avenue Brick Plant, Mixing Plant, Elevated Tressel (sic) for Cars Conveying Raw Materials to Plant, and Mixing Plant. The drawing is captioned "The auger bit forced clay through a dye in a continuous bar. Three cutters cut the bricks which were transferred to the dryers for 24 hours at 450 degrees." Research turned up very little about the company except that it was located on 17th Ave. just north of the fairgrounds, produced common brick and building tile, and a quarry was located near the plant. The photographs measure 3-1/2"x4-1/2" and the cards 4-1/2"x5". The photos are slighlty wavy from the adhesive, but are clear and clean.

Gages The Pipe Machinery Company Wickliffe, Ohio Catalog 1958 Prices, 1961 Stock Report
14 Gages The Pipe Machinery Company Wickliffe, Ohio Catalog 1958 Prices, 1961 Stock Report
Wickliffe, Ohio The Pipe Machinery Company 1961 Hard cover, spiral binding Very good condition
A silver and black graphic and a hard surface cover announce that this catalog is something special. The only fault is a crease to lower front corner. I tried to flatten it, but with minimal success. The catalog measures 8-1/2" x 11-1/4" and has 84 pages. But at the back of the catalog are THREE surprises -- the company's January, 1961 Stock Report, a Price list for 1958, and a brochure for the company's Hilo Set Plugs. Very nice find!

Gorman Rupp Company Lightweight Pumps (circa 1956)
15 Gorman Rupp Company Lightweight Pumps (circa 1956)
Mansfield, Ohio Gorman Rupp Company circa 1956 Soft cover in original envelope
This is a nice little package of materials about Gorman-Rupps self-priming centrifugal lightweight pumps available in three sizes -- the Midget 1-1/2"; The Hawk, 2"; and The Eagle, 3".The large blue leaflet has much information on both sides. The previous owner wrote the prices on the cover and penciled information on the top of the repair parts list which also serves as instructions manual. He also remarked that he bought his pump in 1956 which is why I have some idea of when this was published. The original envelope is intact and more instructions on the reverse side. There are also three warranty postcards, two filled in, one not. The envelope measures 6-1/2" x 9-1/2" with an intact label. It was pretty grungy when I got it, but I used a document pad to clean it and repaired a tears with archival tape.
