A Cruise Round South America 1930 (S.S. Samaria)
1 A Cruise Round South America 1930 (S.S. Samaria)
Boston, New York etc. Raymond & Whitcomb Company 1930 soft cover Very good condition
This is a rather scarce travel guide from the Golden Age of Travel. It's very clean and tightly bound with a small bit of isolated edge wear and a small crease at lower spine. Measurements are 6"x9-1/4" with 48 pages. Many wonderful black and white photographs of sites to see, but also a picture of the ship, the S.S. Samaria. The itinerary shows that the cruise began from New York on Feb. 1, 1930 and ended up at New York on April 4th. In between passengers visited Cuba, Panama, Peru, Chile, Uruguay, the Argentine Republic, Brazil, Barbados, Martinique, and the Virgin Islands. Only 280 passengers would be accommodated on the ultra lavish ship. No price for the cruise -- you had to contact an agent!

Christmas Greetings From the Regiment of Midshipmen (circa 1960's)
2 Christmas Greetings From the Regiment of Midshipmen (circa 1960's)
The Regiments of Midshipmen Unknown Heavy Cradstock Fine
Beautiful, unused Christmas card fashioned from especially heavy card stock for use by the Regiment of Midshipmen. There is no date, but I am pretty sure that the image on the face depicts the chapel which may well date it from the 60's. It measures 6"x7x1/4" and opens to reveal a color painting of the U.S. frigate Constitution.

Compagnie Generale Transatlantique French Line
3 Compagnie Generale Transatlantique French Line "Liberte"
Paris French Line 1950's soft cover Very good
Beautiful travel guide to the luxury of the French Line's star ship "Liberte" which was purchased to replace the Normandie. It had previously been the Europa, but was bought due to its high speed turbine engine for service to the French Line. However, two disasters -- breaking away from her moorings and crashing into a wrecked ship and later a fire caused a delay of five years -- but when Liberte finally made her debut she wowed them! Guide shows art renderings of all the many amenities, plus inset photographs. The whole theme is one of a dreamy Valentine to the "good life." Measures 8-1/4"x10-1/2" and has 32 pages including a centerfold of the ship in full color.Clean and nice -- no date, but circa 1950's.

Friday Magazine July 11, 1941 (Ann Sheridan, Windjammers, Poll Tax, Sorcery)
4 Friday Magazine July 11, 1941 (Ann Sheridan, Windjammers, Poll Tax, Sorcery)
New York City Friday Inc. 1941 Volume 2, number 23 soft cover Good-plus
Beautiful cover art featuring the lovely actress, Ann Sheridan. The magazine is not too common and is clean and tightly bound, though it does have a few faults. I repaired the spine at top and bottom and a few tiny edge tears at back with almost invisible archival tape which is holding well. The only ther is a bit of brownign to lower back cover (see photo). Magazien is huge at 10-1/2" x 13-1/2". Story topics include Ann sheridan, FDR and poll tax, windjammers, guerilla doctors of Shensi, and sorcery.

Matson Lines Mardi Gras Dinner Menu (February 15, 1968)
7 Matson Lines Mardi Gras Dinner Menu (February 15, 1968)
Honolulu, Hawaii Matson Lines 1968 Card cover
A beautiful painting of a scene in Fiji is perfect for the Matson Lines which was located in Hawaii. Mostly they carried cargo, but they also had passenger liners which went From L.A. and San Francisco to Hawaii, to other exotic islands, and even as far as Australia and New Zealand. But along came a spike in modern air travel and Matson's liners were making fewer forays. By 1970 they were done. The liner for which this menu derived was the S.S. Lurline. The menu took a southern slant with Carnival lobster cocktail, jumbo prawns a la Creole, spouther fired breast of chicken, southern ambrosia and Dixie chocolate cake. Menu measures 9" x 12".

Menus Carnival The
8 Menus Carnival The "Fun Ships"
No location stated Carnival Ships No date Card cover Very good condition
The blue folder seen in the first photo is a menu. What's interesting about it is the five additional menus inside hich have no covers. They're plain front and back with the menu printed inside of each. The blue one is a luncheon menu, the others dinner menus, each with a specific theme -- American night, Pacific night, French night, Spanish night and Italian night. All are clean and nice. The only fault is minor edge wear to the blue one.

Nautical Chart 12324 New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway Sandy Hook to Little Egg Harbor (1975)
9 Nautical Chart 12324 New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway Sandy Hook to Little Egg Harbor (1975)
Washington D.C. U.S. Department of Commerce; National Oceanicand Armospheric Adminsitration; Ocean Survey 1975 Edition 13 Card cover Good folder, fine map
Nautical charts are interesting and this one is huge. The folder is a bit toned and has a couple small abrasions -- one at upper left hand corner at front and one on back of the folder at the middle left. Both sides of it offer extended information. I opened the map to its length and measured it at 15" x 57" long (see photos). The map is pristine with no tears to folds -- no defects at all. The map's scale is 1.40.000 nautical miles. There's also a brochure inside with a 1975 tide table for Long Beach Island and vicinity published by Sandy's Sport Shop of Surf City, New Jersey.

New York City Harbor Festival 1977
10 New York City Harbor Festival 1977
New York City Intercom Interrelated Communcations 1977 soft cover Very good condition
I had one of these years ago and it had the same strike-out on the upper left front cover over the original price. I wonder if it's come back to me. Anyway, this is a gorgeous souvenir with BLUE pages. I know they don't look like it in the pictures, but they really are blue. There's much to read in this booklet-- first of all, the itinerary, and then on to the history and a look at the individual ships, plus info on the the Sun-Fish Sail-In and activities such as the New York Times Sail Regatta and the Shriners coming in on the water. Lots of photographs throughout too. The program measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 56 pages, plus back matter. It's a beauty.

Post Card Steamer in the Ice Glacier Bay, Alaska
12 Post Card Steamer in the Ice Glacier Bay, Alaska
Seattle, Washington Hopf Brothers circa 1907-1914 Very good condition
This card offers very few clues to its age, but it's an early one due to it muted colors and hand colored look. It was also printed in Germany which was common for many quality cards during the period. Whenever you see the little round logo with its trio of girls you know it's a Hopf. Sometimes it's brightly colored, but this one matches the scene. Card has not ben used and is clean and nice. Will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve.

13 Postcard "Hendrick Hudson" Hudson River Line (circa 1920's)
Unknown location Unknown publsher Not stated circ 1920's Very Good condition
This black and white card is very clean and nice with no writing on the divided back and no postmark. I did, however, find one just like it with a postmark dated 1922. The Henrick Hudson was put into service in 1906 at the cost of one million dollars. It was quite the thing in its day -- it even had art on its interior walls. The boat was a side wheel steamer licensed to carry 5500 passengers from New York City to Albany and that it did until 1951 when it was not only discontinued, but purposely broken down and hauled away. Card will arrive in brand new plastic sleeve.

Postcard Evelyn Boat Russells Point, Ohio 1920
17 Postcard Evelyn Boat Russells Point, Ohio 1920
Unknown Unknown 1920 Good
Nice postcard of the popular Logan County tour boat, Evelyn, filled to the brim with sightseers. The card's photo shows an attractive greenish tint and is captioned at the bottom "Evelyn Boat, Russells Point, Ohio." The bottom margin shows evidence of writing in pencil which seems to have faded almost away. The reverse pencil is also fading, but I can make out this much: Dear Mother, I am having a grand time. We went fishing and I caught a little fish. I've been over to Russells Point four times alright. We are going over to Sandy Beach today in a boat. Your Son. " The name is faded. Card was sent to Springfield, Ohio. There is a small flat crease to upper right corner. Card will arrive in plastic sleeve.

Very attractive card with vintage scalloped edges. The card has not been used and has no writing on the divided back. Postcard Menemsha Harbor, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts
20 Postcard Menemsha Harbor, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts
Berkeley, CA Mike Roberts No date Fine condition
Beautiful, unused postcard in very nice condition. It's clear that it was issued sometime from 1963 to the present, as there is a zip code under the publisher's name and 1963 is when the five digit code was introduced. At any rate, the photo is charming, The description at the top reads Menemsha Harbor where fishing and lobstering take first place. The snug harbor is home to the Vineyard's sword fishing fleet." Card's finish is a subtle sheen. It will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve.
