The Jacob Wirth German Restaurant opened its doors in Boston in 1949. This booklet was published in 1964 as a tribute. A seidel is a lidded tankard of beer, so this is a toast to good food and good times raised by a list of people who loved it. In addition to the restaurant the Jacob Wirth Company was also a wholesaler of Rhine wine and domestic and imported beers. The booklet measures 6"x9" and has 45 pages of history and stories as well as black and white photographs and a menu at the back.

American Cookery Formerly the Boston Cooking-School Magazine February, 1933
3 American Cookery Formerly the Boston Cooking-School Magazine February, 1933
Boston, Mass. Boston Cooking School Magazine Company 1933 Vol. XXXII, No 7 soft cover Very good condition
This is the last issue of this magazine I have. It's in beautiful condition with no real defects of note. Clean inside and out. The magazine has lots of recipes, but also stories of restaurants and other places which served food. There are two here -- the one which tells about an old Massachusetts barn which was transformed into a tea room and the story of the Iron Kettle Inn located in the Montana mountains. there's also an informative article on oysters. But on to the recipes! Among them are peach pudding, flannel cakes, Martha Washington pie, spiral cookies, French doughnuts, pumpkin soup, pot-au-feu, and Dutch sugar cake. The ads are fun too. Magazine measures 6-1/2" x 9-1/2"

Be An Artist At the Gas Range; Successful Recipes by the Mystery Chef (1936)
4 Be An Artist At the Gas Range; Successful Recipes by the Mystery Chef (1936)
Longman, Green & Co. 1936 soft cover Very Good
If ever a cover screamed 1930'as this one has to be it -- what a strong graphic, both front and back! The booklet was offered in bookstores by Longman, Green who published books by the Mystery Chef -- who, incidentally, lived quite well given the photo at the back of the booklet of his New York living room! But that's a disgression -- the booklet also proved to be, as this one was, an advertising vehicle for the local gas company. It measures 5"x8" and has 96 pristine pages of recipes which are viable in today's kitchen.

Canadian National Railways Menu September 6,1939
5 Canadian National Railways Menu September 6,1939
Canada Canadian National Railways 1939 card cover Very Good
Very handsome 1939 menu for passengers on the Canadian National Railway September 6, 1939. This was a banner year for Canada with the arrival of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth who in May of '39 took a Royal Tour of the country stopping at both small towns and large cities to the delight of fervent crowds. To celebrate the Royal Tour the two Canadian railways -- the Canadian National and the Canadian Pacific --each worked hard to outdo the other in providing half the cars for the Royal Train. Of course by the time this menu was printed the hoopla was all over, but the cover shows The National Monument at Ottawa which was unveiled for the King and Queen on May 18th, 1939. A very nice addition to the menu, Candiana, railroadiana, or travel collection. Measures 6-1/2"x9-1/2" and is printed on heavy card. The left side is in English and the right in French.

Dainty Dishes The Church of Christ Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio Building Fund Cookbook
6 Dainty Dishes The Church of Christ Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio Building Fund Cookbook
Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio Ladies of the Church of Christ Unknown soft cover Good
Very clean and tightly bound cookbook published to raise money for the church's building fund. There is no date for it, so I tried to do a little sleuthing, but the only church with that precise name was building in the 1960's and this booklet precedes that by decades. I then tried looking up the businesses which supplied ads, but again, not much luck. The only company that appeared was the C.H. Yeager Company which came to Akron in 1906 and changed its name to Yeager Company in 1946. The ad shows the old name, so again, it's clearly before 1946. Judging by the lack of digits in the phone numbers the booklet was published fairly early in the 20th century. The recipes are for light fare -- Hungarian potato salad, strawberry salad, marshmallow pudding, raspberry shrub and many more. Booklet measures 6"x9" and has 46 pages. Only faults are loss of bottom back corner which has snapped off at the point and a little browning to a few pages due to extra recipes laid-in. There even one for homemade dry cleaning!

Die-cut Pig Trade Card Cudahy's Packing Co.
7 Die-cut Pig Trade Card Cudahy's Packing Co. "Rex Brand" Meats (Opens)
Chicago; Omaha; Sioux City, Neb.; Los Angeles Cudahy's Packing Company No date. Circa early 1900's card Very good
This one's not at all rare because it was too cute not to keep! It still charms collectors though and has even inspired modern look-alikes in the forms of magnets. This guy's the real deal though! He measures 2-1/2" across at the widest point, which is his feet, and 6" from the top of crown to the bottom of his feet. "King Pig" sits up and begs to be part of the "Rex Brand" line of meats packed by the Cudahy Company. Both front and back sides of the card are identical. Inside the text covers the celebrated Rex Brand sugar cured meats, pure leaf lard, Cudahy's sugar cured hams, breakfast bacon, Rex Brand extract of beef and Cudahy's Essence of Pepsin should you eat too much of the other stuff! Card is in very good condition with just with a few tiny dots of edge wear.

E.H. Wright Advertising For Boys and Girls Down on the Farm
8 E.H. Wright Advertising For Boys and Girls Down on the Farm
Kansas City, Missouri E. H. Wright Company Unknown Early 20th Century (No date) soft cover
This is a cute little booklet designed to attract children, but also contains info for grown-ups to buy Wright's Condensed Smoke and Wright's Ham Pickle. The latter was huge -- 27 lbs of pickling salt which would cure as much as 280 pounds of meat! The booklet derived from the home office and was sent to smaller companies to send to their customers. In this instance it was stamped on the back F.H. Nickerson, Druggist, Greenwich, Ohio. The booklet is clean and nice with two tiny staple holes from mailing. Booklet measures 4-1/4"x7" and has 14 counted pages, each with color illustrations for the kids.

Ethel Franklin Botts Print 1906 (Children With Grandma)
9 Ethel Franklin Botts Print 1906 (Children With Grandma)
Unknown 1906 Very Good
This is a lovely print which captures a sweet moment of children enjoying the treats brought by an old lady. It was rendered by Ethel Franklin Botts, a student of the great Howard Pyle, as was Jessie Wilcox Smith. Her style is a bit different though with a hint of a collage look at times. She was very prolific and an important illustrator of the day. I don't know exactly what children's book this print derives from, but I do know that it's an illustration for a James Whitcomb Riley poem. The book was published in 1906. Clearly, this was a page of the book - I purchased it from a long time dealer who salvaged plates from disbound and damaged children's books. He was NOT a breaker. The print measures 6-1/2"x9-1/4" with the image measuring 5"x7-1/4". There is a remnant of paper from another page at left margin, but will not appear after framing. Several different scenes from same book available.

Fortune Magazine March, 1935 (Japanese Silk; 6 Day Bike Race Madison Square Garden)
10 Fortune Magazine March, 1935 (Japanese Silk; 6 Day Bike Race Madison Square Garden)
New York Time-Life 1935 Volume XI, No. 3 soft cover Good
There is a bit damage to this one, but I bought it anyway because the article about Japanese silk is fantastic! I'll get to that soon, but first you need to know that the upper corner of the last couple pages and the back cover corner were all creased up. I have been able to smooth it all out (see photos)-- we're talking just a couple pages at the back. One required archival tape before the corner fell off and one has a small loss of a corner. The cover just shows several creases at the corner. There's also a small bit of wear to both the top and bottom of the spine, but it doesn't impinge on the binding at all. Everything is tight. Now then, the best story in this issue is a TEN PAGE extravaganza about Japanese cloth. If you love textiles, or all things Japanese as I do, this one's a keeper! Other articles are about International Cement, Soviet Art, symphony finance, Social Security, the six day bike race at Madison Square Garden, and Duparquet, the company which provided quality cooking utensils and kitchen design. Magazine is huge at 11"x14", but still ships for $2.00 in the U.S. OVERSEAS ORDERS WELCOME, but due to size and weight the shipping will be higher. Contact me with destination and I will provide an actual cost. No obligation.

Gourmet Magazine (2 issues, March & May, 1962)
11 Gourmet Magazine (2 issues, March & May, 1962)
New York Gourmet Inc. 1962 soft cover Very Good
I bought these from a cookbook collector who kept them clean and beautiful for many decades. Gourmet was definitely a top tier publication for those interested in creative dining. It's interesting to see how even gourmet food has changed while some classics live on. Among the writers is Lucius Beebe. I remember selling Beebe's railroad titles back when I first became a bookseller and was amazed to find that he's also Lucius Beebe the foodie. Both magazines have great color ads and articles covering pre-summer suppers(you have to SEE the picture with this one to believe it!), dandelion wine,a woman's fond recollection of her grandmother's African American cook, the literary history of the potato, Thai food, eggs, blue trout and more. I have quite a few of these from 1963 and a couple from 1964, so if you're looking for one hit the contact button and I;ll see if I have it. Eventually they'll all be on here.

13 Holiday Goodies and How To Make Them (Book in a Box, 1952)
Mt. Vernon, New York Pater Pauper Press 1952 Hard Cover Fine in Good Box
Book itself is clean as a whistle with no sign of use, other than a stamp on the front free endpaper which reads "American Dairy Association." Book measures 4"x7" and has 61 pages. Nice art throughout in the same design and colors of the cover. Among the recipes are these: Popcorn Christmas Trees, Brown Lace Cookies, Merengue Stars, Holiday Molasses Taffy, Chocolate Caramels, Cranberry Topsy-Turvy and much more. The book is in perfect condition -- the box (which is seldom seen) has been repaired at all corners with archival tape. Someone else did the top ones and I did the lower! Ice Cream Ephemera: Waldorf Ice Cream, Wm. E. Kay & Sons (Akron and Elyria, Ohio, 1920's)
14 Ice Cream Ephemera: Waldorf Ice Cream, Wm. E. Kay & Sons (Akron and Elyria, Ohio, 1920's)
Akron, Ohio; Elyria, Ohio Waldorf Ice Cream; Wm. E. Kay and Sons 1920's soft cover Very good condition
I got these two ice cream items together, so I decided to keep them that way. The first item is a leaflet advertising the Universal Ice Cream Cutting Machine manufactured by Wm. E. Kay & Sons. The leaflet measures 6" x 9" with a photo on the front and two on the back. The inside discusses the ice cream cutter's construction, size, operation, adjustment, sanitary features and a guarantee. There's also a testimonial from the Richwine Ice Cream Company. The second item is very attractive and creative from the Waldorf Ice Cream company of Akron -- all pastel colored art showing fabulous desserts. It measures 4-1/2" x 7-1/2" with 20 counted pages. Leaflet shows a vertical crease from having been folded in half -- otherwise clean and nice. The booklet is pristine inside, but does show some rubbing to top as well as a small bit of stubborn dirt. Overall nice. (ADVERT.)

The four booklets inside this box are beautiful and each has its own theme -- shopping, entertaining, food and travel. National Biscuit Company Luncheon Celebrating New Bakeries (Feb. 20, 1904)
17 National Biscuit Company Luncheon Celebrating New Bakeries (Feb. 20, 1904)
New York City National Biscuit Company 1904 Soft cover Good condition
This is a very scarce item, expensively created. It was published for those attending a luncheon in celebration of the National Biscuit Company's new bakeries at its buildings on 15th St. and 10th Ave. New York City. Opening page and a subsequent one shows gold and red design plus a color picture at back showing a little boy in a yellow raincoat clutching a box of crackers. Text is on heavy paper and includes the speeches of dignitaries. Measures 6-1'2" x 9-3/4" with many unnumbered pages. The inside is very clean but does show faint dampstaining to top margin of pages, a stain to front cover, a repair to lower spine which seems to be holding, and a chip to bottom spine and to lower edge. Overall a very good collectible rarely seen. (Bus.)

Rawleigh's Good Health Guide Almanac Cook Book 1921
18 Rawleigh's Good Health Guide Almanac Cook Book 1921
Memphis,Oakland, Minneapolis et al W.T. Rawleigh Co. 1921 soft cover Good
The cover is so striking on this one, but that's not the only color image this almanac has. There is color at the back cover too, but the show stealers are the gorgeous color ads on reverse of both front and back covers. Both are by Rawleigh, but the one at the front features personal hygiene products and one at the back is all about medicines. The almanac measures 6-1/2"x9-1/2" and has 64 pages. Much nicer than the average almanac of the day too! Every page is illustrated -- there's plugs for Rawleigh products, a two page spread showing the company, the usual almanac stuff and, yes, at the back a cook book. It's clean and tightly bound, but I did re-enforce the spine with almost invisible, non-browning archival tape and it's holding beautifully.

Realites Magazine February, 1974 (Chaim Soutine, Waverley Root)
19 Realites Magazine February, 1974 (Chaim Soutine, Waverley Root)
Paris Realites Monthly Magazine 1974 Number 279 soft cover Very Good
I love this magazine -- always so ahead of the times with stunning photography and grat articles on travel and the arts. The editors chose to showcase the wonders of Hong Kong by featuring in on the cover, but what caught my eye were articles on the French painter Chaim Soutine and a food article by Waverley Root (author of the classic Food by Waverley Root and The Food of France). Here he takes on the apple, the forbidden fruit. Realite is a top drawer magazine -- very elegant and written in Englsh.
