Billy Rose's Aquacade New York World's Fair 1940
1 Billy Rose's Aquacade New York World's Fair 1940
The Gruen Watch Co. 1940 soft cover
Wow -- what a graphic! I'd have picked it up just for that, but it's also a souvenir from the 1940 World's Fair. Billy Rose's Aquacade was a glamorous show featuring gorgeous people, both men and women -- sort of a Ziegfield follies in water, though he referred to it as a water ballet. The funny part is that Rose endorsed his ads. The one I like best says (in Rose's own words), "Just taste one -- you'll see why I'm proud to have SPAMWICHES served at the Aquacade." Now THAT's what you'd call glam for sure! :-) Measuras 9"x12" and has 32 pages and three full page color ads -- Coke, Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, and Chesterfield cigarettes.

Californie Illustration Pour L'Exposition De Paris 1900. California Paris Exposition.
2 Californie Illustration Pour L'Exposition De Paris 1900. California Paris Exposition.
Calfornia / Paris California Paris Exposition Commission 1900 soft cover Good condition
This is such a seldom seen and beautiful booklet it's amazing that someone kept it only to let it incur defects. I never like to buy items with problems, but this one called for a rescue mission. The biggest problem when I first got it was the cloth spine strip which was completely missing on the front and the spine, but somehow remained on the back. I used a heavy brown book tape, but only on the naked parts -- if you look at the back cover you'll see the original cloth. The others issues are two snapped off corners, one page where something sticky must have caused a small abrasion, and some rubbing to gold edges. The booklet has gorgeous graphics in pastel colors and much information in three languages -- French, English and German. The booklet measures 7" x 10" and has been deeply discounted due to condition.

Canada 1939 New York World's Fair Edition
3 Canada 1939 New York World's Fair Edition
Ottawa,Canada Dominion Bureau of Statistics. Department of Trade & Commerce 1939 Soft cover Good
This is really a nice publication from the 1939 World's Fair, all about Canada. In part, it beckonsto travelers, but it's also a serious look at Canada's industries and exports. The book is tightly bound and clean, bit as with every copy I have ever seen, it has a few faults. The spine shows wear to top and bottom, though I have re-glued it and it's firm. There's also a little bit of pink stain on the front page, creasing to upper front corner, and the page opposite the color plates shows some foxing. Overall though, the book is quite wonderful with a pull-out color map, lots of photos, and several fold-outs about various industries, including the manufacture of cellophane. Book measures 5-1/2"x 8-3/4" and has 176 pages.

Chicago Laird and Lee Publishers 1904 Hard cover Good condition

The book measures 5-1/2" x 6-3/4" and has clean and tightly bound pages. I cleaned the blue boards and improved them quite a bit, but there's still some small areas of stubborn soil. Great Lakes Exposition Official Souvenir Guide, Cleveland 1936
6 Great Lakes Exposition Official Souvenir Guide, Cleveland 1936
Cleveland, Ohio The Great Lakes Exhibition Corporation 1936 soft cover Near fine condition
The Great Lakes Exposition was a huge event and a huge success, as it brought fun and hope to people still struggling with the realities of the Great Depression. In fact, it was SO exciting they held it again in 1937. One of the quirkiest facts about the exposition was the disappearance of the giant book fair-goers were asked to sign. To this day no one knows what happened to it. The guide book is very clean and nice, and tightly bound with its wire spiral binding. I had one of these last year, but just now got another. It measures 6" x 9" and has 56 pages with many black and white photographs, plus a look at the many wonders.

New York World's Fair Views 1939
8 New York World's Fair Views 1939
Long Island City, New York Quality Art Novelty Company Inc. 1939 Card cover Very Good
The 1939 New York World's Fair must have been a sight to see judging by the photos in this oversized souvenir booklet. It's a big one at 9-1/2" x 12" with a total of 48 pages. This one is not about prose -- it's a picture book showing off all the wonders. The good part is it's printed on quality coated paper so the black and white photographs look great. Faults are few, but there is a diagonal crease to the upper front corner, but it shows predominately on the reverse side. There's also a small area on the lower edge of the back cover which has a little chip to the outer paper. Overall it's clean and tightly bound. I counted 170 pictures in all with descriptions.

Official World's Fair Weekly Century of Progress Chicago, 1933
10 Official World's Fair Weekly Century of Progress Chicago, 1933
chicago A Century of Progress Internatioanl Exhibition 1933 Vol. I, No. 8 soft cover Very condition
From May to October 1933 the entity overseeing the Chicago World's Fair published a full-out magazine with stories about the exhibits and information on what to do each day. The highlights for this week, the fourth, went on until June 24th. The big event was the Zoo of Dragons. I took a picture of both the ad and the opening pages of the story itself -- quite an endeavor! Other stories include a convention bringing together scientists from all over the world; the exhibition of the painting, Whistler's Mother, which was on loan from a museum in Paris; the story of neon lights; log rolling; faster trains; the art of Sweden; a cyclorama of the Battle of Gettysburg; an Old West Town and much more. Magazine is in clean, tightly bound condition -- very nice. Measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 64 pages.

Very handsome print, one of a portfolio of various scenes from the Chicago Exposition. This one depicts the Transportation Exhibit's famous Golden Door. The print is explained on the reverse side. The reason it was such a big hit is that a single arch, appeared to be several retreating ones. it was also embellished with carvings, bas reliefs, and mural paintings. The print with margins measures 8-/2" x 12" with the image measuring 6" x 9" Very clean and nice with a flat superficial crease to upper left corner which would not be seen after framing.

New York / Akron, Ohio Sealtest 1939 world's Fair Edition soft cover Fine condition

The booklet measures 6" x 7-1/2" and has 96 pages of recipes from the Sealtest Kitchens. It's illustrated in throguhout with both color and black and white photographs. 16 Singer Bowl New York World's Fair 1964 (Die-cut Brochure)
USA Singer Sewing Machine co. 1964 Card cover Very good condition
Die-cuts are so charming and this one from the 1964 World's Fair is particularly attractive, as it unfolds showing three "pages" about all the fun to be had at the Singer Bowl -- 21 TV screens to see yourself plus a 6" personal TV; a camera which sees in the dark; an exhibit of 25 of the word's most luxurious fabrics; demos of sewing ideas, art, and decorating; A movie by Ugo Torricelli billed as a "ballet of needle and cloth"; the chance to win a hand-made flag every day; soft music emanating from a Home Entertainment Center; and typewriters and postcards to type a message back home. The Industrial Might of the U.S.S.R. (U.S.S.R. Pavilion 1939 World's Fair)
18 The Industrial Might of the U.S.S.R. (U.S.S.R. Pavilion 1939 World's Fair)
Moscow Foreign Languages Publishing House 1939 Bardin I. soft cover Very Good
This small pamphlet is one of a large collection prepared for, and sold individually at, the U.S.S.R. Pavilion at the 1939 World's Fair. I have never been able to determine for sure how many pamphlets make up the entire set, but I currently have 19 and have records of an additional 21. They are priced according to subject matter and availability. All measure 4-1/2"x5-3/4". This one contains four black and white photographs, three industrial and one agricultural, with a total of 28 pages. The thrust of this one is that tsarist Russia was an economic disaster, but post Socialist Revolution Russia enjoyed a new day ranking amongst the leading countries. It also makes note of a visit from the writer H.G. Wells. All booklets are in English and are propaganda, some more so than others. If you are looking for a specific title feel free to use the contact button and I'll see if I have it. Eventually they'll all get on here!

Visitors Guide to the Centennial Exhibition and Philadelphia 1876
19 Visitors Guide to the Centennial Exhibition and Philadelphia 1876
Philadelphia J.R. Lippincott & Co. 1876 Hard cover Good condition
Small hard cover vistors' guide which sports two large maps -- one in black and white of 1876 Philadelphia and the other a colorful panorama of the grounds of the exhibition. Both maps are good sized -- see photo of the fairgrounds map in full color below. What I love about this particular book is the inscription written by the owner who actually went to see the spectacle. In pencil she wrote, "Mother and Grace visited the exposition in July, 1876. Keep it 'til 1976!" There's also a small newspaper about the Smithsonian's effort to create a new centennial in 1976! The good news is nobody threw this book away. It measures 4-1/2" x 7" and has 48 pages illustrated with a few engravings. P.S. I made a few repairs to back of map with archival tape. Ypu can barely see it on the back and not at all on the front.
