24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
1 24 Success Articles From American Preservation Magazines
U.S.A. American Preservation Unknown date Unknown edition Disbound Articles Very Good Condition
I found these disbound articles in a box of Architectual Review Magazines which I bought at auction. I almost tossed them out until I realized how worthy they are. Each of the 24 focuses on a particular area within a state located anywhere in the country. They all derived from American Preservation magazine, so the color photographs are stunning. Each article is pretty long with many images. I wish I had more room to show them. Areas are these: New Orleans Lower Garden District; Providence, Rhode Island; Salem Massachusetts; Eutaw, Alabama's Greek Revival Architecture; Galveston, Texas; Mizner's Eden Palm Beach's Flamboyant Architecture; Brownsville, Texas; Waterford, Virginia; Helena, Montana; Columbus, Georgia; Madison, Indiana; Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Key West, Florida; Jacksonville, Oregon; Mt. Auburn in Cincinnati, Ohio; Manchester area of Pittsburgh; Savannah, Georgia; Powelton Village, Philadelphia; Saratoga Springs, New York; Crested Butte in the Rocky Mts.; Detroit's Woodward East; Oakland cemetery; Galena, Illinois and Bay View, A Summer Resort in Michigan. All are clean and stapled. Will still ship for $2 media in the U.S. as always.

ART/artifact: African Art Through Western Eyes
3 ART/artifact: African Art Through Western Eyes
Pittsburgh, PA The Carnegie Museum of art 1989 Ephemera in Original Envelope Very good condition
This envelope full of loose items is something I bought ages ago and re-found it yesterday in a box in the storage closet. I like to rummage around n them to see what I have. As you can see from the pictures, this is a handsome envelope with the same graphic on the pages inside. They aren't bound as designed, but has text on both sides of each page. The contents page includes an intoduction, maps, items from the Carnegie Museum of Art Collevtion which are illustrated with black and ewhite photso. Also included are recommended books, five 4"x7"postcards, two, 5"x7" postcards and five 6" x 7-1/2".There is also a brochure which accompanied the exhibition at the Carnegie plus ten color slides. The package is useful for educational purposes, but is also a pleasure to peruse for pleasure. all items are clean and nice, but I did have to use two small discrete pices of archival tape at the flap.

Atwater Radio Catalog 1927 / Atwater Kent Radio Log (1929)
4 Atwater Radio Catalog 1927 / Atwater Kent Radio Log (1929)
Philadelphia Atwater Kent Manufacturing Company 1927 Soft cover Good
These two Atwater Kent items came together so, as always, I kept them that way. The catalog isn't perfect, but is tightly bound and clean. Defects include vertical crease on all pages and cover, but I have ironed it flat and put it in the book press. There's a also a tiny corner missing to lower front cover, a part of mailing label on front has been removed, there's a few faint pencil marks on back, and evidence that something was once pasted on top edge of a two page spread (see photo). The radio card log is interesting -- it's completely filled in on both sides and dated 12-25-29.

Stunning catalog filled with vintage cars which were the finest of their time and remain so today. Every page is in color printed on quality coated paper. Inside the catalog is a partial list of the cars which were to be sold. The sale doesn't appear to be an auction though, as they called it an exhibition sale. Centenary St. Stephen's Parish 1843-1943 (Philadelphia)
7 Centenary St. Stephen's Parish 1843-1943 (Philadelphia)
Phildelphia, PA St. Stephen's Church 1943 soft cover Good
Clean tightly bound centenary celebration keepsake. Brown wraps feel very supple and are marred only by small tears to the yapped edges which is very common due to the fact that the edges extend beyond the text. Corners also show flat creasing, but have been strengthened by me at back with mending tissue to keep them from snapping off (see photo). There are no names or writing. Printed on quality coated paper and illustrated profusely throughout with black and white photographs. Also includes an extensive text. Not commonly found. Measures 8"x11" and has 192 pages. Local ads at back.

Der Reggeboge The Rainbow; Journal of the Pennsylvania German Society 1988 (Friedrich Krebs)
8 Der Reggeboge The Rainbow; Journal of the Pennsylvania German Society 1988 (Friedrich Krebs)
Birdsboro, Pennylvania The Pennsylvania German Society 1988 Volume 22/1988/2 soft cover Very good
Very nice clean magazine with just some light toning to spine. Tightly bound and no names or writing. This is a good issue because it's devoted to Friedrick Krebs, a well-known fraktur artist who rendered many fancy certificates and the like, but also turned his hand to broadsides. There are many black and white images of his work throughout, as well as a lengthy text. But the unexpected bonus is a small color card bound-in created for an exhibition of his work at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center in Williamsburg Virginia in September, 1988. Magazine measures 8"x9" and has 39 pages. There is a mailing label on the back cover.

Der Reggeboge The Rainbow; Journal of the Pennsylvania German Society July, 1979 (Fraktur Artist Christian Strenge)
9 Der Reggeboge The Rainbow; Journal of the Pennsylvania German Society July, 1979 (Fraktur Artist Christian Strenge)
Breinigsville, Pennyslvania The Pennyslvania Herman Society 1979 Vol. 13, No. 3 Soft cover Very Good
I very much like these older issues of this magazine because they have just one in-depth article. In this issue it's about Christian Strenge who was a fraktur artist and German immigrant who settled in Pennsylvania. It's interesting to read, but especially interesting if you are doing genealogical research on the Strenge name. Magazine measures 6"x9" and has 24 pages. Only fault is a tiny round stain to lower margin of front cover. I have many of these from the 70's and early 80s, so if you are looking for a specific issue let me know and I'll see if I have it.

10 Der Reggeboge The Rainbow; Journal of the Pennsylvania German Society Vol.24/1990/2 (Johann Valentin Krafft)
Birdsboro, PA Pennsylvania German Society 1990 soft cover Very good
If you are interested in Pennsylvania German genealogy this magazine is a goldmine. I have more (a fairly good sized stack), so if there's one you're seeking use the contact button and I'll see what I have. This one has an especially attractive cover which depicts a Pennsylvania Dutch Virgin Mary. Contents include a study of a Pennsylvania German broadside from the 18th & 19th centuries entitled "A Sorrowful Song About A Terrible Murder"; Pennsylvania church history; a study of a document which sought a pastor in 1731; the career of Lutheran minister, Johann Valentin Krafft; and the ordination and ministry of David Candler. Also includes a skit in both German and dialect English. Magazine measures 8"x9" and is very clean with just the bit of light edge toning.

Felt, Silk & Straw Handmade Hats: Tools and Processes
11 Felt, Silk & Straw Handmade Hats: Tools and Processes
Doylestown, PA The Bucks County Historical Society 1977 soft cover Fine
Crisp, clean booklet, almost like new. We have sold many of these over the years and I still like it as much as ever. If you're interested in haberdashery, or just old skills, this is one great booklet. It measures 8-1/2"x11" and 24 packed pages. illustrated throughout with both photos and instructional drawings. It's part of the Tools of the Nation Series. Discusses all aspects of the handmade hat, plus extensive notations and bibliography at back 24 pages. We used to have lot of other titles from the series, but now just have three -- this one, one about butter making, and one about Pennsylvania pottery. If I haven't listed the other two by the time you see this listing just shoot me an email and I will be happy to put it up for you.

12 Garden Square North Revitalization Plan (Pittsburg, Project of the Mattress Company, 1994)
Pittsburgh, PA The Mattress Company. The Buhl Foundation. The Pittsburgh Foundation circa 1994 Card cover Very good condition
This is an interesting look at community rehabilitation. The large booklet takes the reader on a stroll to see "a mixed-use urban district integrating arts, education, commerce and residences, providing a convenient and safe main street environment." Twelve properties on North Avenue and Federal Street were the two thoroughfares to determine Garden Square North. There's also a wonderful card mapping it all out including the buildings and can even be glued to be more dimensional. The booklet measures 11" x 12-1/4" and is clean and tightly bound. No names or writing.

13 H.H. Richardson's Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail (1981)
Pittsburgh, PA Allegheny County Bureau of Cultural Programs 1981 Card cover Very good condition
This is a very well done booklet, oversized at 9" x 12" with 46 counted pages. The photography is all done in duotone and is truly stunning. The court house and jail designed by H.H. Richardson is considered the apex of Pittsburgh architecture. Richardson designed it in 1883 and it was completed after his death in 1988. Booklet is very nice with one superficial small crease ro lower front corner. Otherwise pristine.

Penn Fibre & Specialty Co. Inc. Nylon Price List and Color Chart
16 Penn Fibre & Specialty Co. Inc. Nylon Price List and Color Chart
Philadelphia, PA Penn Fibre Specialty Co.Inc. Unknown date soft cover Good-plus condition
This is a rather plain price list, but the color chart inside is GREAT. Not only does it show all 14 colors, but it also includes a strip of each one which can be removed and put back into its opening. Amazing that they're all here! This company, located in Philadelphia, supplied customers with nylon, glass reinforced nylon, Teflon, Polyethelene, Polypropylene, Delrin, Celcon, Mylar Vinylite, Paper Boards, Hard Fibre, Fishpaper, Compressed Asbestos, Fabric Laminates, Epoxy Plant Fibre, Polycarbonates, and Polyurethane. The four page list was coming apart at the seam when I bought it, so I repaired it with stong fiberous Japanese paper which is very low-key. You'll hardly notice it. The items measure 9"x11".

Penn Fibres and Specialty Co. Inc. (Plastic and NonMetallic Washers)
17 Penn Fibres and Specialty Co. Inc. (Plastic and NonMetallic Washers)
Bensalem, Pennsylvania Penn Fibres and Specialty Company Unknown Date Card cover Very good
This is such a colorful, almost playful, advertising brochure replete with examples of the actual material used for the washers. One sample is missing, but it may still be here. They have a tendency to fall out without confinement which is why I have this one in a plastic storage bag which will go along to the buyer. Closed, the brochure measures 8-1/2" x 11" and opens to two additional sides. There are supposed to be 16 samples, but I have just 15. If it turns up I'll add it to the description and if I find it later I will send it to the buyer. Really -- I will. Oh, forgot something! The company opened in Pennsylvania in in 1937. Today they are known as Ensinger Penn Fibre. They also have a factory in Delaware where they have 7000 high speed washer die combinations.

Fisher, the then governor of Pennsylvania. Other topics include safety, beauty, bridges, Western Pa. scenery, the Couderspot Pike, the sylvan glades of Pa., military value of highways, historic Cumberland Valley and much more. Photograph First Communion Boy White Bows at Neck and Arm. (1938)
20 Photograph First Communion Boy White Bows at Neck and Arm. (1938)
Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania Stearns Studio 1938 Fine condition
This is a very handsome photograph. I know the date was May 1, 1938 as written on the back of the front cover of the folder. What puzzled me a bit was the large white bows at the yougn boy's neck and arm, plus a boutonniere. But I did some research and found that arm bows were not unusual. The boy holds his missal and rosary, but the viewer's eye catches the cute little person beside him -- all dressed up for the big day and clutching a tiny purse. The image itself (minus the paper "frame") measures 4" x 5-3/4". Closed, the folder measures 6-1/2"x 9". No names were recorded, but the photographer was Stearns Studio in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
