A Seidel For Jake Wirth Jacob Wirth Co. German Restaurant (Boston, 1964)
1 A Seidel For Jake Wirth Jacob Wirth Co. German Restaurant (Boston, 1964)
Boston Stinehour Press 1964 soft cover Near fine
The Jacob Wirth German Restaurant opened its doors in Boston in 1949. This booklet was published in 1964 as a tribute. A seidel is a lidded tankard of beer, so this is a toast to good food and good times raised by a list of people who loved it. In addition to the restaurant the Jacob Wirth Company was also a wholesaler of Rhine wine and domestic and imported beers. The booklet measures 6"x9" and has 45 pages of history and stories as well as black and white photographs and a menu at the back.

Alice (1992 Opera)
2 Alice (1992 Opera)
Hamburg, Germany Thalia Theatre 1992 soft cover Good-plus
An uncommon item, published in tandem with the opening of the dark opera, Alice, which is based on Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The lyrics probe not the story as much as how it pertains to its author. Was not intended for children. Inside front cover (see photo two) is a small drawing signed by its artist. I can't decipher the first namel, but I do believe the last name is Zinn. I immediately thought of David Zinn who does have a history with the Thalia Theatre, but I can't say for sure that this is right. Research shows no account of him having anything to do with the set design for this show. Program is written in both German and English, primarily German, and is illustrated with both black and white photos and drawings plus color plates. Measures 8"x10-1/2" and has 64 pages plus a laid-in insert with info on the songs. Clean and tightly bound with no names or writing, but does show scratches to back cover and a small bit of edge wear, also at back.

Der Reggeboge The Rainbow; Journal of the Pennsylvania German Society July, 1979 (Fraktur Artist Christian Strenge)
4 Der Reggeboge The Rainbow; Journal of the Pennsylvania German Society July, 1979 (Fraktur Artist Christian Strenge)
Breinigsville, Pennyslvania The Pennyslvania Herman Society 1979 Vol. 13, No. 3 Soft cover Very Good
I very much like these older issues of this magazine because they have just one in-depth article. In this issue it's about Christian Strenge who was a fraktur artist and German immigrant who settled in Pennsylvania. It's interesting to read, but especially interesting if you are doing genealogical research on the Strenge name. Magazine measures 6"x9" and has 24 pages. Only fault is a tiny round stain to lower margin of front cover. I have many of these from the 70's and early 80s, so if you are looking for a specific issue let me know and I'll see if I have it.

5 Der Reggeboge The Rainbow; Journal of the Pennsylvania German Society Vol.24/1990/2 (Johann Valentin Krafft)
Birdsboro, PA Pennsylvania German Society 1990 soft cover Very good
If you are interested in Pennsylvania German genealogy this magazine is a goldmine. I have more (a fairly good sized stack), so if there's one you're seeking use the contact button and I'll see what I have. This one has an especially attractive cover which depicts a Pennsylvania Dutch Virgin Mary. Contents include a study of a Pennsylvania German broadside from the 18th & 19th centuries entitled "A Sorrowful Song About A Terrible Murder"; Pennsylvania church history; a study of a document which sought a pastor in 1731; the career of Lutheran minister, Johann Valentin Krafft; and the ordination and ministry of David Candler. Also includes a skit in both German and dialect English. Magazine measures 8"x9" and is very clean with just the bit of light edge toning.

Though it is written in German, it's not hard to use because each drawing is numbered to match the name of the item in German. There are a total of 456 items in all. I bought quite a few of these not long ago, all different, so if you are interested in a different small katalog from Germany let me know and I'll see if I have it.

Dresden Treasures From the Saxton State Library; Belser Faksimile Editionen (1987)
8 Dresden Treasures From the Saxton State Library; Belser Faksimile Editionen (1987)
Washington D.C. Library of Congress 1987 soft cover Three items -- Very Good
These three items came together, including the mat for the faksimile illuminated papers. That item measures 8-1/2" x 12-1/2" outside the "frame" and 10-1/2" x 14" inside it. The illuminations include six pages which show the actual age spots and marks. The main item is perhaps the exhibition catalog showing treasured books from the Saxton State Library which opened in Dresden in 1556. During WWII many rare books and incunabula were hidden in 18 castles. The catalog measures 5-1/2" x9" and has 20 pages in ENGLISH. The Belser booklet is written in GERMAN. It's clean and nice and measures 8-1/4" x 11". The three would make a nice addition to an antiquarian collection, or for someone who appreciates illuminated manuscript and other rare books.

Echoes of a Lost Generation: Poetry and Essays of the Holocaust (1978)
9 Echoes of a Lost Generation: Poetry and Essays of the Holocaust (1978)
Cleveland Heights, Ohio Cleveland Heights High School 1978 Second edition Card cover Good condition
I bought this booklet years ago in Cleveland Heights, but was not sure where it came from originally ,so back into the closet it went several times. But this time my research answered the question of location. It's a student publication written and published at Cleveland Heights High School. There are stark black and white drawings and a few black and white photos. The students grasped both the history and the emotion of the horror. Many wrote with the voice of the children but others told the story of the adults who lost their lives too. The booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" with 46 pages and each poem or essay is signed by its author. Booklet shows only some light sunning around the edges of the front cover, but is otherwise nice.

Generale Proklamieren Friedensregierung! WWII Propaganda Leaflet July 21,1944 (ZG 34)
10 Generale Proklamieren Friedensregierung! WWII Propaganda Leaflet July 21,1944 (ZG 34)
Germany 1944 Good
Three tiny pin holes and remnants of two pieces of tape to upper corners are all that mar this original piece of WWII propaganda issued on July 21, 1944 following a radio speech at 1 a.m. that morning proclaiming the peace movement by leading German generals. I was able to find a translation which is the white page included with the photo. The reverse side of the original has a section which translates thus: "What This Means To You -- you know what the German Generals knew for weeks - that Germany has lost the war. The Peace Government may or may not be smashed, but no one can change the basic fact. Any German government has to capitulate in order to have peace. The conditions for you and your comrades are laid down by traditional rules of warfare and by the Geneva Convention. The generals have acted. Whatever you yourself may do remember what you now have learned." Leaflet measures 5-1/4"x8-1/2" and is printed on both sides. Includes translation.

11 Germany The Towns of Northern Bavaria (Travel Guide English Language circa 1930's)
Reichsbahuzentrale fur den Deutschen Reiseverkehr No date, circa 1930's soft cover Very good
This is a remarkably hard to find vintage travel guide. The cover graphic is beautiful and caught my attention immediately. the booklet is tall and slim at 4" across and 8-3/4" tall with 64 pages and a wonderful crisp, fold-out map at the back. Almost every page has a black and white photograph printed on quality coated paper showing a scene not to be missed. Northern Bavaria covered the provinces of Upper, Central and Lower Franconia and a part of Swabia. A very scenic, charming area with much to read about. Written entirely in ENGLISH.

Germany Westphalia Hesse and the Weser Hills 1936 Travel Brochure
12 Germany Westphalia Hesse and the Weser Hills 1936 Travel Brochure
Berlin Reichsbahnzentrale fur den Deutschen Reiseverkehr 1936 soft cover Very good condition
What makes this brochure and map interesting is the pink printing inside the front and back covers announcing the XIth Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany in 1936. Most of these brochures are from 1937, so I was surprised to see it. The 1936 Games were very controversial given the atmosphere in Germany at that time. It's still often referred to as Hitler's Olympics. The brochure measures 4" x 9" and opens to become three times as big as when closed. There are many black and white photographs, plus the usual sort of information for tourists in 32 pages. There is also an exceptionally nice crisp map at back (see photo) which measures 12 x 13"

Hamburg-American Line Twin-Screw Steamer S.S. New York Third Class (Deck Plan)
14 Hamburg-American Line Twin-Screw Steamer S.S. New York Third Class (Deck Plan)
Germany/New York Hamburg-American Line Early 1900's Very Good
Enormous deck plan for the S.S. New York, a 20,000 ton twin-screw steamer owned by the Hamburg-American Line, Germany's oldest shipping company. The twin-screw steamer was revered for its speed -- a passenger could come aboard in New York on a Thursday and be in England or France the following Thursday. This particular ship was used frequently by Norwegian immigrants coming to North America. Folded this is a small item measuring just 4-1/4"x5-1/2", but carefully unfold it and it's a gigantic 22-1/2"x33-1/2". I will press out the few wrinkles and repair a couple of tiny tears to corners of folds at reverse side using almost invisible non-browning archival tape to prevent damage. NOTE: Overseas customers please contact me with destination before ordering so we can provide you with an actual shipping charge.

Other articles include the price of a debut for young women, Microbes Join the Army, Safe Government Broadcasting, Prelude To American Fascinism, a nice article about author, Jack London and more. Klingspor Kalender 1925 (Beautiful art, German Language)
18 Klingspor Kalender 1925 (Beautiful art, German Language)
Offenbach Gedruckt und Herausgegeben von Gebr. Klingspor 1925 Hard cover Very good
These little German calendars are exquisitely rendered -- the art is so charming. It's in the GERMAN LANGUAGE, but is so pleasing to the eye that art trumps comprehensiion for non-German speakers. It's a small, very thin book which measures 5-1/2"x7-3/4" and is illustrated with tiny illustrations throughout. The pages aren;t numbered, but I counted 22.
