This is a beautiful litle gift book perfect to tuck in the Christmas stocking of a historian. The book is crisp and clean as new. The only fault is a tiny tear to the top front edge of the jacket. I have placd it in brand new mylar. The first facsimile edition was published in 1959 and this is the 7th printing. The diary itself is printed on heavy tan paper with the rest on cream. The journal is an account of Washington's first official mission, made as emissary from the Governor of Virginia to the Commandant off the French forces on the Ohio, October, 1753 -- January 1754. Not long ago I saw a documentary about the beautiful windows designed by Matisse for the chapel of a nunnery in France. So when I saw this booklet about it I had to have it. Matisse considered this project his master work and indeed it is. The booklet is gorgeous, printed on quality coated paper with bright, beautiful photography accompanied by description. It measures 7-1/4" x 10" and is as new. I doubt it was ever read. Would make a lovely gift. View more info

Tres bien! This French ship booklet is a thing of beauty, not often seen. The booklet is big at 8" tall and 12" wide and shows off its beauty in 18 counted pages. There are black and white photographs galore, but the real eye catchers are the paintings, especially the double spread of the smoking room rendered by Richard Lindner. There's also a spread showing the exterior of the rebuilt ship. The S.S. Ile de France launched originally in 1927, but was turned into a ship for troops in 1941. It wasn't until 1949 that she was launched again, rebuilt and decorated by the finest designers. The book... View more info

The Michelin guides are quite a good series with much information for the tourist. But they also provide a concise view of the devastation in France in the aftermath of WWI. The guide measures 6"x 8", has 176 pages printed on quality coated paper, and is illustrated with small photographs throughout. The boards are very clean as are the pages. The only faults are lack of dust jacket and a tiny chip to the side edge of the front free endpaper. Very collectible, as there is a guide for every major battle field in France. View more info

This is such a seldom seen and beautiful booklet it's amazing that someone kept it only to let it incur defects. I never like to buy items with problems, but this one called for a rescue mission. The biggest problem when I first got it was the cloth spine strip which was completely missing on the front and the spine, but somehow remained on the back. I used a heavy brown book tape, but only on the naked parts -- if you look at the back cover you'll see the original cloth. The others issues are two snapped off corners, one page where something sticky must have caused a small abrasion, and some... View more info

The cover of this catalogue is a bit worn at the front cover as you can see with edge wear and small creases along the spine, none of which impinge on the binding. I almost passed it by, but when I saw the clean, bright pages and, best of all, the amazing people working on the season's operas. Open near the beginning and what do you see but Chagall himself painting backdrops! And in the middle there is the diva herself -- Maria Callas in "Norma." So amazing to see such talent in one place. There's much more to read about other operas of the season illustrated with black and white photos. There... View more info

Wow! What a fun magazine for the arts. I bought it at a small shop which mostly sold popular fiction. I looked around, saw nothing of interest and almost went out the door just as my eye caught this beauty. The only thing that would make it better would be both in English and French text. As it is, it's completely in French and yet you can get the drift of it anyway. Lots of color pages and many types of arts and artists. Topics cover architecture, poetry, history. Jasper Johns, Magritte, Matisse, Dance, Concerts, Pollock, Man Ray, photography, Manet, De Kooning, Post-Modernism, Sculpture, Col... View more info

There are photos on every pages, some in black and white and some color. Very nice. View more info

I knew of this book, but never read it. I'm so glad I bought it though. It's the story of a woman in her 60's who came to France from the U.S. and was living in a beautiful house in a sleepy hamlet. But it wasn't long before the view outside the window of her parlor was shocking. WWI was down below. The book is smallish at 4-1/4" x 7" with 188 pages including some black and white photographs. The book is a series of letters sent back to America. A nice little gift to a history buff. the book is clean and tightly bound with just a very small bit of wear. View more info
