Quirky, fun collectible and probably the oddest thing I ever bought. No date on this one, but clothing on drawings would indicate late 50's to early 60's. Bright pink sales brochure was issued to the would-be Formit lingerie salesperson, or as they say on the record, "corsetiere!" Inside it says, "Join Betsy White for a preview in sound of your Show Business Career." This is augmented by a drawing of the stylish Betsy White, a female salesperson holding up a girdle, and a funky picture of an early 20th century chorus line which doesn't seem to really have anything to do with anything. Absolutely pristine inside and out -- really nice addition to a collection. The book has virtually no wear either inside or out and measures 4"x6". Inside the cover on the front pastedown is a statement that it belongs to the company, and is only loaned to the employee. Failure to return it resulted in a $1 fee subtracted from the employee's wages. The book is numbered 890, but was never issued to anyone. It's illustrated with a few small drawings used to augment the rules of which there are a whopping 1215 in 239 pages. View more info

This slim catalog caught my eye, not because of it's contents but because of its cover. One look and I knew it was from the 1970's for three reasons -- the colors, the clothes, and the play on words. But the real value of this is the fact that it echoes one of the most significant social changes of modern times -- the Women's Liberation movement. The catalog measures 8-1/2"x11" and has 12 pages of sorting tables and mail carts. But it's that cover that makes it special. It's very clean with just a small crease to outer side edge View more info

Yesterday I got thirty Fortune magazines from the 30's, so if you don't see what you want let me know and I'll see if I have it. Fortune was one of the most beautiful magazines of the Depression era and still retains interest in its articles as well as its design. This time two topics caught my attention -- the ever controversial Father Coughlin and wine production in the United States. There's also stories about radium, industrial designers, U.S. Rubber and more. The magazine is very large at 11-1/2"x14" and has 142 pages. Only faults are a small chip to top front edge and minor wear to very ... View more info

Very clean, nice issue of one of the star magazines of the 30's. The photography is excellent, as are the articles and the magazine's design. Three topics grabbed my attention -- a colorful piece about Anheiser-Busch and its bottled beer, Part I of a story about women in business, and a look at Mr. Rockefeller's renovation of colonial Willamsburg. There's also a piece about the cotton industry, one on U.S. Smelting & Refining and a profile of Harry Hopkins. Magazine has no real defect of note. It measures 11-1/2"x14" and has 140 pages. This has to be the oddest trade card ever produced. I've had it for many years and, as you can see, it is part of the montage photo at the top of my website. I have finally decided to let it go even though I have still never figured out why the guy's head's ripped open to expose a rather creepy child inside. The turns of the "paper" look so real it's amazing. The card was issued to sell "the greatest of all blood purifiers." It's larger than average and measures 4-1/2"x6" and has numerous testimonials at back showing how effective it was for curing dyspepsia, biliousness, sick headache and con... View more info

There is a bit damage to this one, but I bought it anyway because the article about Japanese silk is fantastic! I'll get to that soon, but first you need to know that the upper corner of the last couple pages and the back cover corner were all creased up. I have been able to smooth it all out (see photos)-- we're talking just a couple pages at the back. One required archival tape before the corner fell off and one has a small loss of a corner. The cover just shows several creases at the corner. There's also a small bit of wear to both the top and bottom of the spine, but it doesn't impinge on ... View more info

Very interesting catalog of choices for the home-buyer or remodeler. The electric kitchen is the theme, but this booklet provides many options. The first few pages focus on specific sections of the kitchen -- i.e. storage and food mixing, and dish washing. One spread offers suggestions for houses costing $4000 to $6000. There are also pages of laundry rooms and pantries, drawings of the products, and info on a kitchen planning services. All pages are in full color and provide helpful drawings. In some regards it's hard to imagine that this was printed during the WWII era. Booklet measures 7-1... View more info

In its day this was a very popular magazine. It's still popular with me, but I never seem to find many issues. This one covers the department stores of the day, a travel piece on taking a European vacation, replete with lots of full color illustrations and, --the best of all -- a long article about women novelists, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte and George Sands. All of them have stood the test of time and Jane is practically a rock star! The ads in this magazine are even fun to read, and not all of them are about books. There's wonderful ads about player pianos and phonographs --technology galo... View more info

The paper is very crisp and there are no tears or chips. The booklet it tightly bound and clean, but does show two small chips and a small tear aloign the side edge of the front endpaper. I repaired the tear with a small piece of archival tape. Text is augmented by diagrams, tables and graphs. Overall very nice. View more info

Very nice, clean trade magazine targeted at movie theater owners. All the ads and short articles are full of info on the state of the movie experience halfway through the 1950s. The big movie of this issue was definitely Daddy Long Legs, which starred Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron based the novel by Jean Webster who wrote it in 1912. The magazine measures 9" by slightly over 12". The ads of course are for adding comfort and modernity to the movie theater. Coca Cola ad on the back cover encourages its sale in the lobby. This one is rather scarce, so it was a lovely surprise to not only find it, but to also find a color postcard tucked inside. The card shows the parade on Main Street in downtown Rochester The card has been used and is postmarked 1909. There is some creasing to the corners, but card is really quite handsome in its plastic sleeve.
