The Modern Priscilla has the best covers -- this one is very gallant as the little boy hangs on to his passenger who dropped her knitting in the lake. The magazine is very clean nd nice, but it does have a snip off the lower front corner as well as on the next page. There's also a flat crease to front cover. You can feel it better than see it. This is big magazine measuring 10-1/2" x 14" with 44 pages. There's ideas and patterns for both practical and fancy sewing projects. There's also a section on cooking with emphasis on cakes and cookies, rhubarb recipes, and frozen desserts. There's also ... View more info

Condition: Very good

Very nice clean, tightly bound magazine with a complete spine stip. The yapped edges have been trimmed, but they did their job keeping the pages pristine. The advertising at both front and back is fun in itself, but there's also much to read, including four complete pieces of fiction. There's two articles about beauty -- one as related to actresses (who out-earned their male counterparts)and also beauty and the 50 year old woman. Other topics include police systems in Europe, The Young Napoleon, and Von Lenbach the painter. View more info

This magazine is a little salacious for the times -- check out those buzzwords --Tempted! One Night of Passion! They must have been popular though because there are many others of this ilk. This issue looks almost unread and is tightly bound with no labels. There are two short novels "They Called Me Bad" and "This Man Is Mine", plus six short stories and several "romance clinics" which are articles about beautiful hands, why men lose their virility, sex hormones for allergies, the premature baby; and fashionable shoes. the magazine measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 90 dense pages. Publisher: Dallas, Texas, Mary Kay cosmetics: 1976

I thought this 1976 recruitment advertising might be pretty common, but it appears to be just the opposite. It's clever, but in a way seems somewhat against the tide of the Women's Liberation Movement of the 70's. The paper dolls are strung together and folded accordion style. The covers asks "What Kind of Dolls are Choosing Mary Kay Cosmetics as a Career?" Inside (on both sides) it showcases 15 top consultants who collectively earned three-quarters of a million dollars selling make-up. The idea was to show the diversity of the consultants -- club woman, educator, artist, two minister's wives,... View more info

What caught my eye with this one is the cover illustration, but of course the booklet is a piece of Depression era ephemera too. It was intelligently designed so that a homemaker could begin at any month and still complete the entire year. The original owner of this one, however, gave it a limp start in April and was done in May. The booklet explains how to do it and provides numerous categories, plus hints on saving. There's other items here too -- a built-in address book, and for some odd reason, info on etiquette! I've seen this before, though it may not have been from the same company beca... View more info

Real Photo Postcard Canton, Ohio Woman's Club

Price: $20.00

Publisher: Canton, Ohio, circa 1920

Seller ID: 2558

Condition: Good-plus

This real photo postcard shows the handsome house which served as the Canton Ohio Woman's Club. There is no printed writing designating it, but someone penciled it at the bottom margin. The card was printed on Artura paper as seen in the stamp box. Artura was a company which provided real photo postcards from 1908-1924. I think this photo may have been taken in 1920, the year the club was established. At any rate it brings the span of possibility down to 1920-24. Card is clean and nice with just one small light stain to unused back of card/ Card will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve. View more info

I love this museum catalog from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It practically jumped into my hand. The art is simple, but charming, and the cover, both front and back, opens up to show the history of the waist and the no-longer-any-waist-at-all! If you collect Fashion this one is a gem. It measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 12 pages plus the fold-outs mentioned. Very clean with no names or writing. What a perfect cover for May with a little girl in a pink bonnet in a field of daisies along with a yellow butterfly. The mailing label is still affixed to the bottom of the front cover at the right. Other than that there is a small area at the bottom of the spine that has been repaired by me with archival tape which doesn't brown, and the use of the same tape to secure a small crease to the lower right front corner. Among the interesting things in this issue are these: Dorothy Canfield's article about the state of adoption in the late 1930's; fashions for women and children; a round-up articl... View more info

I have never seen this magazine, so of course I had to have it. It's in good condition, but there's some stubborn soil to white part of front cover. I used a document pad to rid some of it, but there's a bit left.I don't dare put any chemicals on it, so I have to concede to its vintage charm. There's also some creasing and an abrasion to upper left corner of back cover. The contents are wonderful -- lots of clothes and accessories, plus glamorous ads from high end companies such as Germaine Monteil. There's also a piece about the designs of Andre d'Aulan. Illustrated throughout with chic black... View more info

I have never before seen this magazine and got it without even knowing it. I bought a box of Ladies Home Journals from the turn-of-the century and this was in the bottom of it. It's quite nice with no mailing label, just the usual horizontal crease. It's an oversized magazine (as many were in those days) measuring 11" x 16" and has 29 pages. There's lots to read about needlework, embroidering book covers, running the house, cooking, gardens and flowers, and mothering, plus fiction. This is both pretty and wise, a gem to keep for yourself, or a gift for someone else. It's not a desk calendar, but a book of days which is divided into the four seasons. There's beautiful art in full color, classic poetry, snips from the text of classic books, recipes, and places to write your thoughts, your favorite things, and your memories. It has not been used and is clean and bright, as is the slipcase. The only minor thing is a pretty unused bookplate affixed to front paste down. The book measures 6-1/2" x 8-1/2". Among the authors are Emily Dickinson, Dylan Thomas, Louisa May Alcott, L... View more info

I have a copy of one of these on here at this writing, dating from the early 1900's. I thought that by the 1930's that that cause had been put to rest. But no -- the organization was as passionate in the 30's to continue the war on alcohol. Two big assemblies were back-to-back in July -- first in Lakeside, Ohio and then in Lancaster, Michigan. Here's a few headlines from the Ohio Messenger: Alcohol As a Medicine; A National Outrage (the end of prohibition); Liquor's Vast Program to Reach Youth and Women Through the Magazines; New Deal In Business as Rum Manufacturers;and Why I Don't Drink Whi... This book didn't derive from the American Bicentennial, but rather from Cleveland women of 1896 and 1996. In 1896 men took over the city's 100th birthday, so when the century turned from 19th to 20th Cleveland women opened a time capsule which included a letter from Catherine Avery (Mrs. Elroy M. Avery) which asked Cleveland women what they had done to improve the city. At the time of writing she spoke of its good attributes, but also of dirty water, polluted air, homelessness and and poverty. Cleveland women had done much in that century past and pulled all of their work together to create t... View more info
