Ever since I became a book and ephemera seller I loved gift books. In those days I bought only old ones, but lately I have fallen under the magic of contemporary gift books. Last Christmas I gave one to my friend in NYC along with with orange spice tea. And guess what? She sent me tea and a gift book -- and we'd crossed in the mail! This book is perfect for such gift giving, a reminder not to work so much that you miss the other aspects of your life. I have many others, old and new, and will be adding others over time. The book is pristine and measures 5-1/4" x 7-1/4" with 50 pages. View more info

Clean, tightly bound early McCall's magazine. As always with the issues from the 1900's, this one is beautiful. The only fault is some browning to spots at spine and a small bit of paper loss at top and bottom. The magazine covers a lot of topics -- fiction, cooking, fashion, baby care, tips for healthy hair, wood carving, and needlework including filet and embroidery, plus even more. The magazine measures 8" x 11-1/4" and has 114 pristine pages. The back cover shows a great ad for Palmolive soap. Other ads are the back are fun to read -- you'll recognize many companies which are still around ... View more info

This set of journals is comprised of ten issues from January to October inclusively. The number of articles is huge, but here are some examples from each issue: economic abuse, patterns of cumulative abuse, alcohol and abuse, changing attitudes about bystanders and violence, economic factors and risk; measuring coercive control, history of family violence, trafficking and adolescent sex industry,... Very clean poetry booklet by Adrienne Rich who won, among many awards, the National Book Award for "Driving Into the Wreck 1971-1972."The booklet appears to have never been read and there are no names or comments to the text. Rich was born in 1929 and died in 2012. The book measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/4" and has 60 pages. My other favorite poet, Sharon Olds, had this to save of Rich's work, "An Atlas of the Difficult World" is alive with beautiful and moving singing, with wisdom and authority. Adrienne Rich is our Atlas, holding up not the heavens but the earth -- and not just bearing it, as a burd... View more info

There's nothing as crisp and clean as blue paired with white. The book is likewise clean and crisp, measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 88 pages. The book has many instructions, drawings, and color photographs, but the best parts are the small techniques. My favorite is this one -- starch, starch, starch! View more info

An amazingly nice issue of a popular magazine at the turn of the 20th century. No only is it clean and tightly bound, but it also retains its yapped edges and has the most pristine spine I have ever seen on a century old magazine. The main article is a story about the British Parcel Post and how it ran, but there are other more fetching topics such as "The Power and Beauty of Woman's Eyes", "Platonic Friendship" and "Society's Amateur Circuses." Plus there's pieces on the captains of industry of the day, an idea for equitable taxation and the teaching profession's hardships and rewards. The t... View more info

Virginia Woolf, artist and author, was also known as a member of the Bloomsbury group as were other other like creatives. The book was published originally in 1930 by The Hogarth Press. This later edition that I have is nicely done and is still interesting after all these years. Woolf discusses "the taboos associated with illness, and explores how illness transforms experience and changes our relationship to the world around us." The booklet measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/4" and has 28 pages. I love booklets in hard cover, especially when they have a dust jacket as this one does. It will arrive in br... View more info

The Pamphlet Poets was a series of chapbooks showcasing such poets as Edna St. Vincent Millay, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson and Edgar Allan Poe. Some of the pamphlets shared the work of several poets in the same booklet. This one is commandeered by Elinor Wylie herself -- a prominent poet of her day who lost her audience after her death only to regain it in the 1980's when feminists rediscovered her. I hope you can read the text of the poem I took a picture of, as she is quite good. The booklet is clean and tightly bound and measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" and has 31 pages. Onl... View more info
