Very interesting to note that teachers in Ohio in 1888 had to be certified annually, as this certificate expired in one year. Jennie Reed was issued to teach grade five in orthography, reading, writing, arithmetic, English grammar, geography, U.S. history, and theory and practice of teaching It was issued in April, 1888 and with it comes a small envelope containing the questions for the exam held the previous August, 1887in grammar, theory and practice, arithmetic and U.S. history. The rest must have been lost to time. The small envelope faintly bears the address (faded) in Reed Mills, Ohio, b... View more info

Very attractive oversized tribute to the passing of Dennison High School of Dennison, Ohio. The class of 1965 emerged from the largest kindergarten class the town had ever had, but it was also the final class to graduate from the high school. The tribute is quite wonderful with great pictures and lots of info. It measures 9"x12" and has 22 pages. Other than an errant mark to front cover and a bit of toning to last two pages due to the insertion of more information about Dennison types on newsprint, it's clean and bright. Very helpful for genealogical research as it lists graduates from ALL cla... View more info

I always wonder why it is that I have such personal stuff -- how did this diploma get away from its family? It's a very nice diploma too, issued on June 4, 1941 to Albert Harms Jr.. The class colors of '41 were black and white and the motto was "We can do anything we want to do as long as we stick to it enough." Oddly, there is no mention of the class officers or the valedictorian, though the names of all class members are listed on a page at the back. Also tucked into the back is the recipient's report card which is pretty good. The diploma has browned a bit at the edges but is otherwise cle... View more info

Card appears to be a class picture of the students, all young adults, the girls with Gibson Girl hair-dos and the boys in suits and hats. But my favorite is the guy sitting on the sill of the open window with his legs dangling down the building. All information was provided by the white lettering at bottom of card. The card was not used and there is no writing on the divided back. Will arrive in plastic sleeve. View more info

This is not something that would turn up too often, but I bought it from the estate of an American professor who taught there for some time in the 50's. It's very clean with just some light toning around the edges of the cover, front and back, with complete toning to spine from sun. It's tightly bound and measures 7"x9-3/4" and has 161 pages. What's excellent about it is the wide range of dates -- 1870 to 1957-- which means its helpful to a lot of people, especially those who are looking for someone without knowing exactly what years they were there. Nice genealogical item. View more info

This is a spectacular find -- gorgeous graphic art and nine tipped-in art works from the exhibition. Of those artists the one I recognized was C.A. Willimvosky who was an important Impressionist of the 20th century. He died in 1971. The show was huge -- 696 works in these categories: applied art, architecture, graphic arts, painting, and sculpture. The catalog also includes a narrative entitled The Manuscript on Gray Charcoal Paper by Thomas Wood Stevens who appears to have corrected errors of fact in a submission by an unknown sender. The catalog has some issues -- edge wear, wear to both en... View more info

Pretty invitation professionally printed and then decorated with flowers and ribbon by hand. The invitation is one-sided and printed on heavy card stock with decorative scalloped edges on all four sides. It measures 4"x6-1/2" and is in very nice condition. I failed to find anything about the sponsoring group, but Scio College had more lives than a cat. It began as Rural Seminary, a Methodist Episcopal school, and then became New Market College named for its town, and then it was the One Study University which required students to take classes only in their major. That apparently didn't worked ... View more info

Very seldom does old paper survive as splendidly as this oversized 1930 college booklet for the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago. It is in very fine condition and retains its own original mailing envelope on which former owner wrote her name. The envelope has some edge tears, but has protected the item wonderfully. Booklet is very handsome, printed on cream paper and measures 9x12-1/2." Photographs run in filmstrip form down the outer edges of each page, with the exception of portraits of staff and founder. This is one of the most elegant booklets I've ever seen. The cover is made of substantial cardstock with raised letters at front, acetate endpapers both front and back, quality coated paper, and excellent black and white historic photographs, plus facsimiles of documents. The subject, Albert W. Smith, was part of small coterie of scientists who worked to found the profession of Chemical Engineering and in doing so put Case Institute of Technology as it as called then, on the educational map.The booklet measures 8-1/2"x11" and has 39 pages. If you're an OSU student, or alum, this is a fun souvenir of the old alma mater in the Roaring Twenties. The cover art is charming and is slugged with the caption "Let the Wild Belles Ring Out". The emphasis here is all about humor -- as they say, Sun Dial has been "making OSU laugh since 1911." Great local ads and there's a portrait (see second picture) of basketball coach Harold G. Olsen. Magazine measures 9"x11" and has 44 pages. I repaired two tears -- one at top of spine and one at lower staple using non-browning, virtually invisible archival tape. The format and cover is remarkably simi... View more info

As you can see, the cover shows dampstain, but fortunately it appears much less on the blue endpapers inside the catalog. I might have passed it by if I didn't know how hard it can be to find these old school catalogs which are interesting and also helpful with family genealogy. There is also some foxing on the photo fold-out at the front and at the back of the book -- anywhere that the paper is coated. The bulk of the catalog is NOT on coated paper though, so it is showing no foxing. This school is still in operation and traces its beginnings to the 19th century. The catalog provides the na... Oversized magazine with a wonderful cover graphic. It measures 10"x 13-1/4 and has 33 pages. The back shows a mailing label discreetly placed in the area designed for it and there is also a bit of edge wear to the spine area, none of which impinges of the integrity of the binding. If you graduated from BW in 1967 or were at the Alumni party the same year there's lots of memories in this one. There's also an article about BW's admired Conservatory and the cover and fold-out celebrate the art of Felix de Weldon, the artist pictured beneath the enormous horses on the cover. What a cover! This one caught my eye from across a room. It's clean as a whistle and has not been folded down the middle as so often is the case with programs of all kinds. One small edge tear on a page was repaired by me with non-browning archival tape. The only other defect a very few pages where the paper was cut a little ragged The program was printed for the 1943 Homecoming game for Drake who took on Iowa State College on Nov. 13, 1943. Generally I can find out who won the game, but this one is anybody's guess! Nice group picture of the Drake Dull Dogs, plus individual pictures, and also... View more info

This one is in good, but not spectacular, condition. There's light toning around the edges of the card covers, a light pink stain to upper right of oval in the design, and some toning to the paper inside, but overall still a small treasure. Sixth graders were Maude Bernard, Welker Pinkley, Waldo Cook. and Martyn Howey. Seventh graders included Eddie Garver, Ivy Mowrer, Mabel Crater, Russel Sheppard, Eva Thorley, Denton Mosier, Sylvia Mowrer, Howard Crater and Hazel Swartz.
