Taylor Inn, Lodi, Ohio Postcard

By: N/A

Price: $9.95

Publisher: Germany, Unknown

Seller ID: 0124

Very bight and clean postcard which was filled out but never sent. The message is funny because Lodi is still a very small town and has no hotel at all these days. The card was addressed to Miss Lura Sheehan Alliance, Ohio. On the other side of the dividing line it reads "Hello, Lura -- You will think I have died, but I am very much alive. Now will you make fun of Lodi when we have a hotel like this? Come up if you don't believe it is truly here. Blanche." View more info

This is an unused linen postcard in fine condition. There's no date, but I suspect it's from the 50's. The caption on the back says it was located on U.S. Route 20 between Thruway Exit 48 & 49, two miles east of Alden NY and 25 miles east of Buffalo. This was one of the many mom and pop motels available during the period. The amenities included radio, TV, central heat (odd that that would even be mentioned in upstate New York!), and Beauty Rest mattresses. The owners were Mr. & Mrs. George C. Folkerth. View more info

I have had many Taylor Inn cards over the years, but never this one. Not only is it a real photo (and is even marked as such), but it also shows a woman walking on the street trailing a fancy dress in her wake -- which is rather surprising given that Lodi was a small agrcultural town. The two appendages in the front to the right of the awning that says DRUGS (which I don't recall seeing before either) are two awninged bays fitted with masses of flowers in boxes. The card is postmarked Sept, 24, 1910 and was sent to Mrs. B. Kennedy of Summit Street, Akron, Ohio. The message reads, "Another chic... View more info

It's a shame the upper front corner is missing from this charming and very early brochure advertising one of the finest resort hotels in the country. Normally I would pass it by because of it, but I didn't because this one is very early (the hotel was built in 1880). There is no stated date, but all it takes is a glimpse of the women guests in their big hats and long skirts and it's easy to place it at the turn of the 20th century. The engravings inside, all in brown tones, are exquisite and the lyrical prose makes you wish for time travel... "From the wide veranda over which riotous roses cla... View more info

Believe it or not, this motel is still open from what I can gather. It's located near Cincinnati, Ohio in Sharonville. The card shows a clean, well-cared for place and the Triple AAA logo indicates that it had their approval. The rooms were completely air-conditioned and it was only 12 miles to downtown Cincy. There were 20 rooms with 20 baths and showers, free TV, and adjoining beautiful Sharon Woods where guests could enjoy boating, fishing, and golfing. And there were restaurants nearby too. Card has not been used and will arrive in brand new plastic sleeve. View more info

This is very small travel booklet about an historic hotel which is no longer in service. The booklet measures 4' tall and 5" wide with a very simple khaki colored cover. There is no date inside, but an ad at back indicates that cars could be rented -- see photo of the ad, as it dates the booklet to the early part of the 20th century. Ephemera from this hotel seems hard to find, but here we have a little gem. There are photographs throughout and information on amenities such as a bath in the room, a fire for the evening, keeping a dog, and various types of meals. The hotel provided breakfast, l... This is as good as a postcard gets -- very crisp and clean with sharp corners and no names or writing on the divided back. It does have a one cent stamp affixed, but was never mailed. The hotel opened in 1926, so if it were an early card it would have had a 2 cent stamp as prices raised briefly from 1925 to 1928. The hotel, a 22 story building, was named after President William Howard Taft and located on 7th Avenue at 50th Street. The Taft was Time Square's largest hotel with 2000 rooms.
