I love this summer cover painted by McClelland Barclay (whom I've always called the guy whose name sounds like it's backwards!). It sets just the right tone for the pages of summer fashions inside. Barclay was best known as a pin-up artist, but he did a lot of commercial advertising work too. The best thing about this issue though is the intact page of Dolly Dingle paper dolls, totally pristine and uncut. Also, of interest is an article about Herbert Hoover in the role of grandfather. The magazine is clean and tightly bound measuring 10-1/2"x14". Mailing label to bottom front and a few small,... View more info

Hit The Mark! A Play Book (Saalfield Publishing 1943)

By: N/A

Price: $12.00

Publisher: Akron, Ohio, Saalfield: 1943

Seller ID: 1510

Condition: Very good

Book is clean and crisp with no names or penciling as per directions to play the game. It's not a title you see often because of its ephemeral lifespan. Once you've played it all, it's over. There's no date on it, but given that's it a war game it's most likely from the WWII era. The game requires a pencil and a ruler and pits the players against each other volleying "bullets, bombs, torpedoes and antiaircraft." The second picture explains how it's done. Book measures 6-3/4" x 7-3/4" and has 16 pages. Very scarce. View more info

And she has five more pages of clothes and accoutrements, all uncut. The book measures 9"x12" and is crisp and nice as new -- a collector's dream! View more info

By: N/A

Price: $24.00

Publisher: Akron, Ohio, Saalfield Publishing: 1966

What a cute book this one is featuring the charming little kewpies and their extensive wardrobe. There's three dolls that pop out of the front cover and three more that pop out of the back. None of the five pages of cute duds require cutting either -- just pop! -- and they're ready for play. Forty-five outfits in all, not counting the hats! the book is lean inside and out and show just one fault --a little damage to the upper right corner thanks to an old price sticker. Otherwise it's great. View more info

What Kind of Dolls Are Choosing Mary Kay Cosmetics As A Career? (1976 Recruitment Die-cut Paper Dolls)

By: N/A

Price: $35.00

Publisher: Dallas, Texas, Mary Kay cosmetics: 1976

Seller ID: 1925

Condition: Very good condition

I thought this 1976 recruitment advertising might be pretty common, but it appears to be just the opposite. It's clever, but in a way seems somewhat against the tide of the Women's Liberation Movement of the 70's. The paper dolls are strung together and folded accordion style. The covers asks "What Kind of Dolls are Choosing Mary Kay Cosmetics as a Career?" Inside (on both sides) it showcases 15 top consultants who collectively earned three-quarters of a million dollars selling make-up. The idea was to show the diversity of the consultants -- club woman, educator, artist, two minister's wives,... View more info

I grew up in Akron, Ohio home of the old and beloved Saalfield Publishing Company. The company was known for books in boxes such as this one and also its licensing for Shirley Temple books. Saalfield had novels too for older kids, so we never grew out of them until we weren't kids anymore. This particular box is new to me, but I would have loved it.The box says it contains 20 playbooks for drawing, coloring, picture hunts, riddles, connect the dots, games and mazes. Twenty it may have been, but it ended up housing 22 -- no repeats and no coloring. Fun gift! Measures 6" x 9". Books are clean an... View more info

Three cute oversized coloring books -- NONE USED -- came my way this weekend in bright, clean condition. They're big at 10-1/2" x 13" and are all clean and tightly bound. Only Kitty-Kat has a little problem -- a very small tear is on the bottom of each page, but I repaired each with a tiny piece of archival tape which doesn't brown and is almost invisible. Only one has a stated date, 1958, and that would be Playtime Pictures. They all, however, appear to be from the 50's, as I bought them together. View more info

These are new to me. I just got them yesterday and have never seem them before. It looks like the local DAR had them made as a fundraiser. The dolls and the inaugural dresses are on the front of each, but you can turn the package over and there's another costume -- two sheets per package. This is a charming paperdoll book with a Japanese flair. There's no date, but the pictures seem to suggest that it comes from the 1940's or 50s. Everything is die-cut, so no scissors necessary. Just pop out the dolls, the clothes, and the accessories and it's time to play. There are four pages filled with items -- I've photographed them all so you can see everything that comes with it. Vintage coloring books are fun, but I will not buy one if it has even a single page that's been colored. This one is pristine, though there is some edge wear to the top left and low left at corners of the front cover. Among the many pictures are Main Street, the Disneyland Train, the Tiki Room, the Jungle Cruise, New Orleans Square, Dixieland Band, Swampland, Frontierland, Steamboat, Sleeping Beauty's Castle, the Mad Tea Party Ride, the Matterhorn and Cinderella's Castle. Lots of changes since this eary coloring book. View more info

By: Anglund, Joan Walsh

Publisher: USA, Boucher Associates: 1967

Seller ID: 3181

Condition: Good condition

Joan Walsh Anglund was a huge hit in the 60's and 70's and still has a following today. I have sold several of her sweet little books and have a couple on here at this writing. This, however, is not a book. It's a paper doll with 12 outfits none of which have been cut. The dolls and her clothes are in great shape, the scissors is still there, and so is the stand. The only thing missing is a small tube of glue which would be dried out anyway if were there. The doll is 5" tall. The box itself measures 5-3/4" x 6". There's a few nicks here and there to the box, mostly at the edges, but not too ba... View more info

Some of the pictures are for adults, others for kids. The book measures 7" x 8-1/2" and is clean and tightly bound with 61 pages. This is an astonishing find based on Super Circus, one of the earliest TV shows for children. It was sponsored by Weatherbird Shoes and began in Chicago in 1949 and ended in New York in 1956. I was born in 1951 and we had TV by'52, but I have no memory of this show. All I remember is Ding-Dong School with Arlene Francis!
