I love gift books of all kinds. They fall off shelves into my hands wherever I go. This one is bit different though -- I would call it more of a hard cover greeting card, as it has only eleven pages with pretty art and positive wishes for the coming year. The title page shows that the buyer considered it as a card too and sent it to Mr. and Mrs. La Vake from Mr. and Mrs. Neison. Here's an example of the wishes, "Carry into the new year only the choicest thoughts and inspirations." Book measures 4" x 7-1/2" and is clean and tightly bound. View More...
I very much like these old gift books from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This one has no date, but is filled with vintage charm including such niceties as heavy paper with a deckled outer edge, a tipped-in color illustation at frontis (rather than having been printed on the page), a dustjacket, and gilt embossing to the front cover. Though Stevenson is listed as the author, the fact is there are many including Robert Browning, Tennyson, Abraham Lincoln and others. There are no illustrations other than the one mentioned, but the type fonts provide mch variation. Includes Brownings "Gr... View More...
This pretty little baby gift is bound in white satin fabric with a linen banner edged in eyelet, a satin embroidery of flowers around a cross, and a ribbon with two tiny roses, one pink and one white. The book fits in its box which is also pretty with a textured white paper covering the lid. The book measures 4-1/4" x 6-1/4" and is printed in light blue ink. The onwership blank has not been written in and the pages are clean. There are fourteen prayers in all. View More...
This is a slim hymnal of 104 songs. It was owned by Mrs. Ellen C. Hammett who declared it her book on front free endpaper with a simple penciled name and date of 1894. The book is lacking a few pieces of overlay paper primarily along outer edge of front cover. There are also a few toned areas on front endpaper. The pages are otherwise very clean and binding is tight. The ones I recognized are Bringing In the Sheaves, Rock of Ages, and Nearer My God to Thee. Book measures 5-1/2" x 8" View More...
Crisp clean gift book still in its handsome slipcase. I've seen this book before, but never in a slipcase before now. The book is crisp and clean as new with no names or writing. The dustjacket has a few little nicks, but overall is quite nice. The photo on front is the Tyler Davidson Fountain, a gift to the city by Henry Probasco in memory of his brother-in-law, Tyler Davidson. It was dedicated in 1871. The rest of the book likewise celebrates all things commenorated in bronze in the Queen City. Book measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" and looks great in slipcase which shows no fault. This one's both h... Pretty little book which was a gift from a mother to her daughter. The book has no printed date so the inscription dated 1910 saves the day. It measures 3-1/4" x 2-1/2" and has 192 pages. The book is nicely made with subtle endpapers and gilding around all three edges of the text block. Book was intended to be read daily -- a few lines from Scripture and a few from a hymn. The inscription reads "Miss Virginia Lane Christmas, 1910 From Mother." View More...
Very attractive book which is designed in accordian style with images, and text on both sides in English. The content is divded into two parts, The Public Face of the Geisha and the The Private Face of the Geisha. The first part is about hair, kimono, make-up, guiles ,and performing as hostesses, dancers and musicians. The second section covers the shunga, the private erotica -- yearning, lovemaking, and passion told in words and pictures. Book measures 7" x 8-1/2". View More...
Book itself is clean as a whistle with no sign of use, other than a stamp on the front free endpaper which reads "American Dairy Association." Book measures 4"x7" and has 61 pages. Nice art throughout in the same design and colors of the cover. Among the recipes are these: Popcorn Christmas Trees, Brown Lace Cookies, Merengue Stars, Holiday Molasses Taffy, Chocolate Caramels, Cranberry Topsy-Turvy and much more. The book is in perfect condition -- the box (which is seldom seen) has been repaired at all corners with archival tape. Someone else did the top ones and I did the lower! There's also ... This little book is charming, the perfect gift for a literary woman. The book is divided into these themes: Women, Men, Relationships, Simple Rules and Life Lessons, each comment of which was written by Austen in one of her beloved novels. The book is small, but not a true miniature. It measures 4-1/2" tall and 6-1.4" wide with 63 pages. The book is clean and bright with no tears, chips, or creasing. The only defect, if you consider one, is a gift inscription which reads thus, "--------, with all our Aloha." I have a pretty floral bookplate laid-in for the buyer to use it or not. View More...
This would make a lovely gift -- so beautiful both inside and out with shiny gilt page edges on all three sides, and a ribbon page marker inside. There's no names or writing and is ready to become a pretty way to keep addresses, phone numbers, birthdays and anniversaries. The book is made with laminated boards and a red cloth spine. It measures 7-3/4" x 10". View More...
I wish I could provide more information on this pretty little Catholic prayer book published in Czechoslavkia, but I have only the bare bones. It's made of celluloid and decorated at edges of reverse sides of both front and back covers with pretty gold and white dentelles and page edges are gilded on all three sides. Other than the cover art there are no additional images. No names or writing either. Measures 2-1/4"x3-1/2" and has 256 pages. View More...
The names on these little New Testaments always makes me hope that the family will find it. Not too long ago I did make a match. It was a a little book of common French phrases for soldiers. He wrote his name, but I couldn't make it out, but the family rcognized his infamous scrawl This little tstament was given to the solider from his Sunay School class. Likely he was teacher. the book is small at 2-3/4" x 4-1/2" and has clean, pages with color art. The outer eges are also inked in an orange color. I wish we knew where he lived, but we don't. If this is of any help, I bought this in Ashland... View More...
I forgot I had this -- it's been in the closet for four years. It's not that I didn't like it -- I did -- but I had another one then. It was not only fun to find it again, but the surprise ephemera tucked in was great. The book is a commemoration of Marge Alge, society editor of the Cleveland Press who kept readers happy for 20 years. This is just barely a booklet -- the cut-off is 100 pages and this one has 99. Many photographs in black and white showcasing good times in Cleveland. Inside the book are the following items:a bookmark from Richard Gildenmeister's bookshop on the Square at Shaker... Very nice clean booklet bound in hard cover, which makes it a lovely gift for someone interested in the church. Both text and color photographs highlight the interior and exterior as well as the church's many icons. Each spread in the book shows a photo in full page, full color format with text across from it. The booklet measures 5-3/4" x 8-3/4" with 42 counted pages. View More...
Vintage baby books have such a sweet charm that I am impelled to buy them, especially if they haven't been used as this one has not. I suspect this came in a box and all the publishing info was on that rather than in the book. But it does indicate that the art was produced by "the Hendersons"! The pastel art is evocative of the times and appears on every one of the 24 pages. The moire fabric is clean and bright on both boards and the contents are pristine. Only fault is some light foxing to bottom edge of back pastedown. Vintage baby books make fun gifts for showers for moms who love the lure ... View More...
This is a beautiful litle gift book perfect to tuck in the Christmas stocking of a historian. The book is crisp and clean as new. The only fault is a tiny tear to the top front edge of the jacket. I have placd it in brand new mylar. The first facsimile edition was published in 1959 and this is the 7th printing. The diary itself is printed on heavy tan paper with the rest on cream. The journal is an account of Washington's first official mission, made as emissary from the Governor of Virginia to the Commandant off the French forces on the Ohio, October, 1753 -- January 1754. It also includes t... View More...
If you like the risqué limerick this is a fun little book which measures 4-1/2"x8" and has 68 pages. I think perhaps the final limerick will give you an overview of the contents better than anything I can say, "The limerick packs laughs anatomical, Into space that is quite economical. But the good ones I've seen so seldom are clean, And the clean ones so seldom are comical." The book is crisp with snow white pages and a bright cover. The paper on the jacket is likewise crisp and shows just two small tears a few small bits of edge wear. It will arrive to you in a brand new mylar cover. View More...
Small New Testament translated from the Greek to English. Measures a diminutive 3" across by 4-3/4" tall. The black boards are heavily embossed both front and back and retain the original clasp which still works nicely. I find these litle Bibles and prayer books very touching, as many, like this one, have names and small extras inside. This one has had a couple owners. On the front pastedown a May R. Price wrote some notes to herself so she could find her favorite verses. Across from that is the name Rosie P. Coits from Ohio dated 1871, a present from Mother. Inside are two small comforting l... This is a very attractive gift book, a little larger than most at 5" x 7-3/4" with 81 pages including two appendices. There are also 14 black and white illustrations gathered together at center of book, black and white photographs, a map, and a drawing. Book is clean and tightly bound with just a name and date to top of the front free endpaper. The date is 1963, three years after publication.I have tucked a brand new bookplate inside for the buyer to use, or not, to cover it at his or her discretion. Text covers the emergence of the island, the Native American tribes, settlements, and its nauti... View More...
Oh, how I love old gift books, but when I get one in its original box I have to work to remain dignified! This one is beautiful and was clearly kept as a treasure. The theme of course is the poems of John Russell Lowell paired with that of violets. Together they are totally charming. This one was given as a Christmas gift in 1912 and is recorded as such on the reverse of the front free endpaper. The hard cover boards are a padded faux leather which is pristine, as are the book pages. The box is soiled a bit and lightly worn, but the gem inside is a beauty. Art is brightly colored and plentifu... View More...
