I grew up in Akron, Ohio home of the old and beloved Saalfield Publishing Company. The company was known for books in boxes such as this one and also its licensing for Shirley Temple books. Saalfield had novels too for older kids, so we never grew out of them until we weren't kids anymore. This particular box is new to me, but I would have loved it.The box says it contains 20 playbooks for drawing, coloring, picture hunts, riddles, connect the dots, games and mazes. Twenty it may have been, but it ended up housing 22 -- no repeats and no coloring. Fun gift! Measures 6" x 9". Books are clean an... View More...
This pretty little baby gift is bound in white satin fabric with a linen banner edged in eyelet, a satin embroidery of flowers around a cross, and a ribbon with two tiny roses, one pink and one white. The book fits in its box which is also pretty with a textured white paper covering the lid. The book measures 4-1/4" x 6-1/4" and is printed in light blue ink. The onwership blank has not been written in and the pages are clean. There are fourteen prayers in all. View More...
Very pretty cover and two more paintings inside. The book has not been used and is very nice in its original white box. The book is without defect and the box nearly so. There are a couple small white spots on the white background which I almost missed. Otherwise it's a clean, sturdy box. The book measures 7-1/2" x 10" and is clean and bright inside and out. The binding is that of a ring binder that we used to take to school. The book has spaces for name, date and place of birth, age, and date of death. There's also room for photos, funeral notes, the names of officiants, music, the rituals at... View More...
I bought this last night at a book and paper sale -- what a surprise! I have been going to this place for 20 years and never have I seen any any Asian items I can recall. The box is covered with blue cloth and is clean and sturdy. Inside are two stacks of small comic books, ten on each side. The text is in Chinese, but the black and white drawings tell a story too. The little books measure 3-1/2" x 5". I was able to translate much, but the same exact specific item was used in every translation site which was a problem because two books are missing from that one. Mine has ALL TWENTY. The transl... Crisp clean gift book still in its handsome slipcase. I've seen this book before, but never in a slipcase before now. The book is crisp and clean as new with no names or writing. The dustjacket has a few little nicks, but overall is quite nice. The photo on front is the Tyler Davidson Fountain, a gift to the city by Henry Probasco in memory of his brother-in-law, Tyler Davidson. It was dedicated in 1871. The rest of the book likewise celebrates all things commenorated in bronze in the Queen City. Book measures 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" and looks great in slipcase which shows no fault. This one's both h... Book itself is clean as a whistle with no sign of use, other than a stamp on the front free endpaper which reads "American Dairy Association." Book measures 4"x7" and has 61 pages. Nice art throughout in the same design and colors of the cover. Among the recipes are these: Popcorn Christmas Trees, Brown Lace Cookies, Merengue Stars, Holiday Molasses Taffy, Chocolate Caramels, Cranberry Topsy-Turvy and much more. The book is in perfect condition -- the box (which is seldom seen) has been repaired at all corners with archival tape. Someone else did the top ones and I did the lower! There's also ... Calendar collectors and those who love a book in a box check this out. It's in amazing condition with no writing and no defects other than a light skim of foxing to cover from the box lid. The box is sturdy and clean which is why the calendar is why it's collectible. The calendar in its box measures 6-3/4" x 8-1/4" and has 50 photos of arrangements created by members of garden clubs around the country. Eight are in color and the rest in black and white, all printed on quality coated paper. View More...
What a beautiful souvenir of the 47th Annual United Federation of Doll Clubs held August 4-9, 1996 in Dallas, Texas. The box itself is so pretty -- opens at the side to reveal a soft cover book entitled Beautiful Children which fits perfectly inside and was printed especially for the purpose. The book contains lovely illustrations in both color and black and white which, along with the text, celebrate children everywhere. Also included is a small card which explains the souvenir doll that was also produced. The book measures 5-1/2"x7-1/2". Very unique! View More...
Oh, how I love old gift books, but when I get one in its original box I have to work to remain dignified! This one is beautiful and was clearly kept as a treasure. The theme of course is the poems of John Russell Lowell paired with that of violets. Together they are totally charming. This one was given as a Christmas gift in 1912 and is recorded as such on the reverse of the front free endpaper. The hard cover boards are a padded faux leather which is pristine, as are the book pages. The box is soiled a bit and lightly worn, but the gem inside is a beauty. Art is brightly colored and plentifu... View More...
I love Peter Pauper books. I once saw at a bookstore near Dayton,Ohio every book the company published, buyer takes all. I get one of them here, I get one there, but I'm happy when I get any. This one is odd insofar that it has no date and no publishing information. The book doesn't have illustrations, but it's quite lovely and would make a nice gift. The book and the case measure 6" x 9-1/2" and have 127 pages. The only fault is sunning to spine and around the edges of the case. (Gift Box 3) View More...
This is a big book for an ephemera site, but it's also a book in a box. The box shows some scuffing and has been repaired at corners on three of four on each piece (see photo). The colorful crest paper covering the box is charming and really bright on the bottom. The book of course is gorgeous -- bound in green leather with a decorative face and has info on the monuments of antiquity, the churches, palaces, and the treasures of art. There's also info on history, biography, religion, literature, folklore, and a handbook for travelers. The book measures 7" x 9-3/4" and has 700 pages! There's also... View More...
Attractive cookbook all by itself, but I do love a book in a box, so of course this one flew right into my hand. It's spiral bound with no sign of covers pulling away. There are no namesowr writing either and the two-piece box shows no defect of note save minor soil to front in a few spots. Barbara Corrigan's folk art is a perfect match for the pages of comfort food and presents itself in both color and in black and white. Recipes cover the following categories: chowders, soups and stews; breads; fish and sea foods; "fillin' dishes; vegetables; cakes and cookies; puddings and pies; and jams... View More...
This is a fun set to advertise Samsonite luggage and just the right size to be added to a suitcase. Its a handy 5" x 7-1/4" and roomy enough for all five booklets to keep from rattling around. The box is a little worn but still strong and the booklets appear to have never been read. Their titles are: Official Rules of Card Games by Hoyle 49th edition; 150 Ways to Play Solitaire; Poker --The Nation's Most Fascinating Card Game; Fun With Games of Rummy; Let's Play Bridge With charles H. This book is so pretty in its matching box. It's clean and bright with no names or writing. The only defect is one page which is almost coming out of the binding. Fortunately, I have archival tape which mended it perfectly on both sides with no problem in closing the book. Even the tape is almost iivisible. I have two photos of them. The book combines the work of several well known authors -- George Eliot, Shakepeare, Charles Dickens, Louisa May Alcott, William Thackeray, Clement C. Moore, Phillip Brooks, Lewis Carroll and more. Theres also the story of the little girl named Virginia who asked... View More...
Book is clean and without defect. It also retains its original box which is likewise pristine. The book is written in both Chinese and English, each page unfolding the elegant and graceful tea culture in both languages. The art is lovely and is seen on each page. But perhaps the most interesting are the Chinese postal stamps which echo the tea culture theme. They appear to be under plastic, but you can open them up and hold them and put them back. There are a total of eight. Book measures 7-1/2" x 10-1/2 with 24 pages. Book is easily put back into the box. Would make a very charming gift. View More...
This is a charming item, made even more so given that the photography was done by Walter Chandoha who still remains the godfather of cat photography. Each photo is in black and white, one for each month. There are no names or writing anywhere and the original box is present. The calendar is bound with a plastic spiral which is in very good condition. Note that the bottom of the box was designed to allow it to send in the mail, but fortunately, it never was. The calendar and box measure 6-1/2" x 7-1/2". View More...
This inspirational book is lovely with its crisp golden binding, thanks to the box which kept it nice. The bottom portion of said box is very sturdy and clean. The lid is also sturdy, but has edge wear and some reglued paper at the top. Book pages are pristine except for one small inscription from a friend of the previous owner marked 1972. I buy these for friends sometimes and add my wishes beneath. It's nice to see both the book and the sentiments. The book coverLoce, joy, Peace, Long Suffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness and Temperance. It measures 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" and has 86 pag... View More...
I was surprised to see that this gift book was last published in 2003. The first came off the press in 1968, but this one is still early -- second edition, second printing, 1973. The book is very clean and nice and is in its original silver box. The box shows one small indentation on the front, but the silver outer paper still shines. The only other fault is a blank bookplate used I think to cover a name. Otherwise pristine. The book is based on Christianity and the focus is on living a good life. Text is broken up into many short chapters. Measures 5-3/4" x 8" and has 64 pages. Will ship in U... View More...
I love books in boxes and this one is so pristine it's amazing. The booklet itself appears to have never been read. It was given as a gift to Ruth and Carl from Harlan with Best Wishes. I like inscriptions because they're part of the book's history. I bought a book in a box at Christmas for a friend and wrote my inscription under the original one -- 100 years later. But getting back to this booklet, the box is sturdy with just a small loss of the outer paper -- about the size of a Tic-Tac. Unlike many marriage books, this one is secular rather than religious, though it does cover in oen chapte... View More...
