Here we have a grouping of carte de visites featuring women of the mid-19th century. The carte de visite was a craze at the time and people collected them like baseball cards. These are all small portraits mounted on heavy cardboard like a cabinet photo, but measure only around 2-1/2"x3-1/2", sometimes 4". Often the backs are very ornate, as photographers used the blank space to advertise. These, however, are fairly plain. Very nice view of the Snowball Dining Room in Mammoth Cave in Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. The ceiling is comprised of gypsum crystals which look much like snow covering the entire ceiling. The restaurant is 267 feet underground. Luncheon was served on both Scenic and All Day Trips. The restaurant was "air-conditioned by nature" to maintain a constant 54 degrees. Card will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve. View More...
This is a clever way to focus eyes on one item at a time. Inside this brown folder are 29 individual sheets -- shirts, shorts, skirts, dresses, purses, and more -- even furniture with a nice skin. There are designs for both men and women. The folder measures 6" x 11" and is right sized for the pages. There's also fun names for the duds --Villa d'Estate, After the Hare Before the Grouse, and The Archaeology of Laughing. This is a good one to hang on to. [BUSINESS BX 1] View More...
This is the last year of the Spur's tall format. In 1940 everything changed. Already this one from 1939 was down to a monthly, rather than a twice a month publication. but it still bills itself as "A Magazine of the Good Things in Life." There are some good things here too -- there's big articles about the Kentucky Derby, Lei Day in Hawaii, and the ever-growing sight of fishing ships in New Bedford. There's also society stories, a piece on Shirley Temple, dogs, fox hunting and more. The color ads include Packard, Lincoln Zephyr, Grace Line Caribbean-South American Cruises. Magazine measures 10... View More...
