The Language of Flowers; Thirty Floral Prints and the Story of Each Flower 1937

By: N/A

Price: $25.00

Publisher: Akron, Ohio, Billows Funeral Chapel: 1937

Seller ID: 0275

Condition: Very Good

A beautiful collection of floral prints with a folded flap explaining the story and meaning of each flower. All thirty are pristine and very beautiful, seemingly provided by a funeral home. I suspect that the set was made by another company and then purchased by the funeral home for distribtion as a subtle means to advertise their services. At any rate, it's a thing of beauty and the only one we've ever seen. The outer wrapper is a bit worn at the folds, but I ironed and repaired a few tears at the reverse side with archival tape and it once again looks presentable. The contents are pristine. Price: $35.00

Publisher: U.S., Private publisher: 1891

These are private mailing cards which have not been used. The back of the cards indicate that they were "Private Mailing Cards" which were authorized by Act of Congress May 19, 1898 and continued through 1901. After that the buzzword was "postcard." The reason these were called Private Mailing Cards is because the government couldn't create enough new images to make the citizens happy, so private printers were allowed to print their own, as long as they maintained the authorization on the back. The house is the McKinley family homed located in Canton, Ohio. The second card shows the pallbearer... View more info

I have seen these memorials for a couple members of the House and Senate, but this is the most contemporary. Representative John M. Ashbrook R., was a strong conservative, so much so that the 1982 Alamanac of Amderican Politics called his far right beliefs "almost a catalog of lost causes." But Ashbrook was heartily memoralized by his colleagues. The Ohioans who spoke were Clarence J. Brown, Dennis E. Eckhart, Willis D. Gradison Jr.. Tony P. Hall, Thomas N. Kindness, Delbert L. Latta, Bob McEwen, Clarence E. Miller, Michael G. Oxley, Donald J. Pease, Ralph Regula, John F. Seiberling, Bob Shama... View more info

This is a rather unique copy of a fairly common book, as it was owned by a doctor of note from The Cleveland Clinic who wrote by hand in it about death. The book itself is an early artist's book, a genre which is today a growing sector of the book market. Gwen Frostic, a Michigan artist, wrote poetry and paired it with art and beautiful artists' paper. On the back endpaper of this copy the doctor wrote out a poem by Mrs.Coolidge about the death of President Calvin Coolidge's son during his stint in the White House. On the back pastedown next to it the Cleveland doctor wrote about the death of ... View more info

This is a remarkably scarce catalog by an artist who was born in Greece, but worked in Ohio at least for awhile. This catalog is very clean and nice with just some minor edge wear. The opening is a very good essay by Lucy Lippard who explains the artist's work and accompanis it with notes on the massacre memorials and on tile designs for urban spaces. The exhibition for which this catalog was published occurred in NYC from October 25 to November 17, 1984. Catalog measures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 14 pages printed on card stock. This is a gorgeous art catalog inside and out. What I like about it in addition to its beauty is the information it provides about the artist and her work. I like that there's photos of her creating these oversized sculptures. I also am taken with a section titled Ghosts and Sculpture, Harriet Hosmer and Patricia Cronin. Harriet Hosmer, as it turns out, was an artist who at the age of 20 in 1851 had a supernatural encounter. She, too, was a sculptor and here she and Cronin merge ghosts and sculpture and love and death in the 21st century. The catalog measures 8-1/4" x 10-1/4" and has 72 pages,... View more info

This is a common publication, but a very good one for looking back at the death of President Kennedy and also looking at it for the first time. The photographs are very large and tell the story greatly with the help of the text and the captions under the photos.
