Publisher: Portland, Maine, Hugh C. Leighton: No Date

Seller ID: 1821

Condition: Very Good

I think this is the prettiest card showing Deering Park in Portland, Maine I've ever seen. The white caption at the bottom left corner adds to the attractiveness. The card has not been used and is very crisp and clean with just a tiny wear spot at tip of both right corners and a small discoloration at back above stamp box. The stamp box at back is the clue that it's an older card, as it states, "One cent for United States and Island Possessions, Cuba, Canada and Mexico. Two Cents for Foreign." Among the celebrities who stayed there are President and Mrs. Harding, General Pershing, Thomas Edison, Henry and Edsel Ford, Cornelius and Reginald Vanderbilt and John Burroughs, author of many books on natural history. This card offers very few clues to its age, but it's an early one due to it muted colors and hand colored look. It was also printed in Germany which was common for many quality cards during the period. Whenever you see the little round logo with its trio of girls you know it's a Hopf. Sometimes it's brightly colored, but this one matches the scene. Card has not ben used and is clean and nice. Will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve. View more info

Seller ID: 2083

This black and white card is very clean and nice with no writing on the divided back and no postmark. I did, however, find one just like it with a postmark dated 1922. The Henrick Hudson was put into service in 1906 at the cost of one million dollars. It was quite the thing in its day -- it even had art on its interior walls. The boat was a side wheel steamer licensed to carry 5500 passengers from New York City to Albany and that it did until 1951 when it was not only discontinued, but purposely broken down and hauled away. Card will arrive in brand new plastic sleeve. View more info

Lincoln cards are generally beautiful and this one is no exception. It shows some embossing to areas around the circle, th frame around Lincoln and the banner at the bottom. The name is C. chapman. the card was never mailed, but an inscription helps date it to 1912. It reads, "To Aunt Lydia From Mary B. Graybill 2-12-1912." I thought when I bought a couple of these magazines that the McCleary Sanitarium in Excelsior Springs, Missouri was for TB patients, but alas it was not. Dr. A.S. McCleary founded the sanitarium in 1901 for people with gastro-intestinal problems. His specialty though was curing hemorrhoids without surgery and his well advertised promise that if he failed to do so patients didn't have to pay. Surprisingly, the sanitarium stayed open until 1974. The magazine was sent to former patients and perspective ones and is actually rather interesting, especially if you have family members who worked or st... View more info

What a colorful and interesting scene this is. Not only does it show a handsome fire station, but also vehicles, fire fighters, and the horse power that fueled the machinery. The card shows a tiny bit of corner wear and writing on divided back. It was never sent, but it has been written on across the dividing line with no attempt at an address. The writing is a little hard to read, but the gist of it is the writer was busy with company and likes the recipient's choice of cards. Nothing too exciting there, but the picture at the front is great. Card will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve. View more info
