Blossom Music Center of Akron, Ohio has welcomed the annual summer festival of music by the Cleveland Orchestra for decades. I have been there many times and yet I have never seen this book before. There are great area ads at the front and info on Blosson, but the real core of the book is the programs bound-in from the entire 1978 season and the program notes spanning June 20th to September 8. Among the stars were guest conductor Henry Mancini, the San Francisco Ballet, and the Cleveland Orchestra Boys' Choir. Book measures 6-1/2" x 9" and is not paginated. It's very clean and tightly bound wi... View more info

Large program bound with quality golden cording. It measures 9" x 12" and is clean and bright inside. The cover is a bit toned around the edges and there are indications of nibbling to upper corners. I repaired them with archival tape which smooths it out and keeps the tiny chads from the abrasions to keep from tearing. Archival tape is non-browning and almost invisible. Inside there are full page photos of the Queen Mother, The Princess Margaret and others. But the focus is on the ballet and its dancers -- Alicia Markova, Yvette Chauvire, Youly Algaroff, Henning Kronstam, Kirsten Simone, Lu... View more info

This is an enormous magazine which measures 11" across and 14" tall. It's clean as a whistle inside and out. The only detraction is the mailing label on the front cover. Lots of interesting ads, but also lots to read. The articles in this issue are: vintage guitar amps 1928-1934; Rick Nielsen Revisited; Remembering Elvis; Sam Phillips and Sun Recording Studio; Greg Kihn; Bob Perine on how he helped Leo Fender make it big; Charles Daniels; Mossman Guitars; and the Sonny Jr. Amplifier. Magazine ships for $2 in U.S. Other issues available from the same year. View more info

This was a small independent publication, issues of which are very hard to find. I've had it a long time, but it just surfaced today in one of my storage closets. There are short articles about arranging a programme; the death of Francesco Lamperti, the Italian singer; ease in violin playing; and others. But I do think the ads are what steal the show! Magazine is clean and tightly bound, but does show some toning to the back cover (see photo) and a flat vertical crease, likely from having been in a mailbox. I have ironed it flat and put it in the bookpress. Magazine measures 7" x 10" and has 1... View more info

I saw the word Playbill on the spine of the binder and had to have it, especially when I saw that the shows were older, from 1968 to the 80's. There are 14 programs in all, most of which are Playbills from the various New York City Broadway theaters, but there's also a couple from community theaters close by but outside the city, including Jones Beach. Some programs have ticket stubs stapled to them which is always a bonus. New York shows include The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie; Plaza Suite; 1776; Company; Sleuth; No, No Nanette; Annie; Peter Pan and more. Very nice find for a theater buff. View more info

I am amazed that I recognized John Davidson on the cover of this booklet, but somehow I did. I don't think I've seen him since the 70's. But he is still very much an entertainer appearing in musical theater and on television. The booklet is filled with photographs of him in various roles and performances, plus as a child and teen, though of course the book derives from 1967, very early in his career. Photos are in both black and white and color. The bold signature you see in the photo in printed on the page -- not hand-signed. Booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" with 20 pages containing biographical... Very handsome cover on this tall music book which measures 7" x 10-1/2" with 56 pages. The music is from the Congo style, an African spin on the religious Mass used in churches. All aspects of the Mass are included from the Kyrie to the Agnus Dei, The lyrics are all in English. The first edition of this booklet came out in 1969. Booklet is clean and tightly bound with just a few penciled comments which could easily be erased. I didn't because they can sometimes be helpful. View more info

I almost passed this one by because of the inked name on the front cover and the wear along the spine. But I opened it anyway and there was Guy Lombardo's signature! From there it got even better -- I found four more signatures from band members -- Bill Flanagan, guitarist and vocalist; Kenny Gardner, vocalist; Cliff Grass, saxman and clarinetist; Victor Lombardo, youngest brother (saxaphonist); and a name I can't decipher. It's next to Lebert Lombardo, but it's a conundrum because the first name seems to be Lebert, but the last name looks like it ends with "t." Booklet is lavishly illustrate... View more info

At first glance this appears to be a catalog but it isn't. It's a booklet covering Edison's choice of the best 300 songs to have stood the test of time. But Edison didn't pick this music alone -- the buyers of his records did! I expected nothing more than a list, but found a lot of music history in each description. The first one to catch my eye was the Irish sogn I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen." Every afternoon at 4:00 my Irish grandfather had a bath and sang this song while he soaked. I thought he brought it from Ireland, but no -- it was written by a music professor from Kentucky! Many o... View more info

Such a charming trio -- a pianist, a violinist, and perhaps a vocalist, all dressed beautifully. The card is clean and nice, but does show a 1" scratch with a small tributary at the top edge on into the pianist's hair. Card appears to have been postmarked in Germany and is not written in English. Card is lovely and will arrive in a brand new plastic sleeve. View more info

This is a slim hymnal of 104 songs. It was owned by Mrs. Ellen C. Hammett who declared it her book on front free endpaper with a simple penciled name and date of 1894. The book is lacking a few pieces of overlay paper primarily along outer edge of front cover. There are also a few toned areas on front endpaper. The pages are otherwise very clean and binding is tight. The ones I recognized are Bringing In the Sheaves, Rock of Ages, and Nearer My God to Thee. Book measures 5-1/2" x 8" View more info

Very handsome souvenir commemorating Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra. Seventy-five years of fine music is captured in these pages, including blue tinted pictures. There's also a nice section about the orchestra's summer 2006 European tour, plus a retrospective of years past. Very nice program, clean and tightly bound. The margins are mildly toned and there's an odd whiteness over the cover image which almost looks like rain or water from a hose. This was the premier Playbill and the star on the cover is a young Ethel Merman in the role of Annie Oakley. The music and lyrics were provided by Irving Berlin. The cover of this catalogue is a bit worn at the front cover as you can see with edge wear and small creases along the spine, none of which impinge on the binding. I almost passed it by, but when I saw the clean, bright pages and, best of all, the amazing people working on the season's operas. Open near the beginning and what do you see but Chagall himself painting backdrops! And in the middle there is the diva herself -- Maria Callas in "Norma." So amazing to see such talent in one place. There's creasing to to both outer corners of front cover, small sprinkle of foxing to back cover and some toning to edges (see photo). Pages are pristine.
