This is such a charming blend of the music of Stravinsky with art. The History of the Waltz

By: Reeser, Dr. Eduard

Price: $20.00

Publisher: Stockholm, The Continental Book Company: No Date

Seller ID: 0996

Condition: Good-plus

This is the kind of quirky booklet-in-hard- cover that I am impelled to buy, especially when I open it to page 10 and read this, "... the running, wheeling, pressing of hands, furtive bumpings, and sometimes the country cries and other indecent things, which I shall not mention for modesty's sake, and are not spared until the piper by his silence has separated the couples who, if they could, would continue to rush around madly together the whole day long." See what I mean? Who could resist? It's a charming booklet-in-hard-cover that actually does offer some serious information about the waltz ... View more info

By: Rogers, John B.

Price: $35.00

Publisher: Cleveland, Ohio, The Hinchcliffe Printing Company: 1917

Seller ID: 1328

Condition: Very good

This Cleveland theater program is interesting for a couple reasons -- the back story of the play and the fact that it was in Cleveland as a fundraiser for the Dorcas Invalid Home, a Cleveland charitable center for indigent or poor people suffering from terminal conditions. As for the play, it launched originally in New York City under the title Bibi of the Toy Shop, but was blasted by the critics and forced to close after only a few days. Along came John B. Rogers who bought the rights to it and to its song "Oh You Beautiful Doll." The song of course became a hit (they say it was one of the so... View more info

These little books are charming. I have four at the moment -- this one is The Barber of Seville by Rossini. The book is small at 4-1/2" x 5-3/4" and has a bio of the composer, a commentary which explains the nuances of the plot, a list of characters, and the libretto itself. There is also a list of recordings from Columbia and Victor, plus famous themes from The Barber of Seville. There is also an image of Rossini at frontis. View more info

Klaus George Roy may not be internationally recognized, but he was very well known on the Cleveland music scene. He was also a composer and this composition from 1953 was published as part of the AMI Library of Choral Literature. It is signed and dated thus: "This copy for my friend Walter Strauss -- linguist, scholar, music connoisseur and ? (illegible) K. George Roy 11/26/65." Roy died in 2010. The booklet includes lyrics (in Latin) and music and is v... View more info

What a fun copy of this 1963 program! There's a name on the front that I can't make out, and lots of other names inside which I can. The signatures are from the singers of the May Festival Chorus. Among them were Anna Elise Zeiger, Marion Austin, Mildred A. Schultz, and Marjorie Bieneke, plus many more. The event was held May 16, 18, 124, 25, 1963 at Music Hall. There were four concerts and --get this -- Isaac Stern was violinist. The program is a bit worn, but is clean and tightly bound with only a few problems -- a small abrasion to top front corner of front cover, a white sticker at the t... View more info

I was taken immediately by the bold graphic cover, but I was also delighted with the equally bold black and white drawings inside, all of which are the artistic talent of Ben Shahn whom I discovered as a book illustrator. The booklet consists of the words of The Twelve Days of Christmas which reads as the illustrated poem it is. This booklet was published initially in 1949 and then was published in a revised edition in 1951. But on the last page of this particular one is the revised one, but is from a 1963 printing. Booklet measures 7-1/2" x 8-1/2" pages. There's a small bit of edge wear, a fe... View more info

This is a new one for me, so it was great fun to find it. The cover is made of heavy cardstock with a mottled paper overlay. You can see light brown, dark brown, reds and greens, especially on the back. I think maybe a couple of the dark ones on the front might be stains, but I'm not sure. The booklet is nicely illustrated and includes genealogical information in addition to the story of one of the most beautiful musical instruments every created. The booklet measures 6-3/4" x 9-3/4" and has 91 pages in quality paper with drawings and black and white photographs. View more info
