Though called a design for braiding, this is actually an embroidery transfer. There is no date on it, but I got it with a lot of other sewing items which were dated in the 1920's, so it's likely this comes from the same era. What's interesting about is that the design came in either yellow or blue ink. This one's a yellow, so if for some reason the buyer changed her mind about it she could remove it from wool or silk by rubbing with benzene, gasoline or carbona! The desi... View more info

Very handsome catalog from a company which billed itself as "New York City's Pioneer and Leading Art Needlework Shop." It measures 7"x10" and has 31 pages. The attractive purple and cream cover is repeated inside with purple print and purple art throughout. It appears that the company sold finished items stamped with an embroidery design for the customer to complete. Among the items offered are pillow tops, laundry bags, silverware holders, curtains and valances, towels,... View more info

Embroidery transfers seemed to have come in two colors -- yellow ink or blue ink. This one is marked blue, but it appears brown. It may have been used ,or it may have darkened, but on the back of the envelope it says that you might want to baste the pattern to the fabric and embroider it that way. This is a large motif in three parts designed for a bedspread. The pattern was issued by Pictorial Review magazine, a popular publication of the day View more info

I love, love, LOVE these early issues of McCalls. I had some more, but sold them all at the Cleveland Book and Paper show last fall and now I'm down to just this one. But this one is a pretty thing indeed, especially those pages of fashion plates (see photo two). The format was smaller in those days, so this magazine measures just 8"x11", nowhere near the size it grew to later, especially during the 30's. Even in the early days McCall's kept true to form with articles o... View more info

According to the intro to this 1917 craft book, crocheting and knitting were bouncing back into popularity after having waned for awhile. The entire book is focused on ladies' sweaters and wraps with photos of the finished product worn by a model, accompanied by complete instructions. The booklet measures 6-1/2"x9-1/2" and has 48 pages and a dozen or so patterns. Serves a dual purpose -- provides new ideas while advertising Bucilla yarn. Booklet is clean and tightly boun... Very nice, clean magazine. Very retro of course, but some of the clothes are still pretty cute as is, or can be updated with some tweaking. The magazine' slogan is "anything less just wouldn't be you!" The "in color" then was crisp white, but styles varied a bit. There are glamorous ruffles, dresses with a dash of color, designs for petites, long dresses and mini dresses and much more. Also includes articles about creating different looks from the same pattern, making yo... View more info

Publisher: Canton, Ohio, The Canton Magazine Company: 1918

Edition: Volume XIII No.7

Seller ID: 0831

Condition: Good-plus

For those from Canton, Ohio, where the magazine originated, this is a nice local collectible in addition to being a less common woman's magazine of 1913. As you can see from the cover art by Olga T Heese, a magazine art is of the day, WWI is raging. Not only does the art serve as a reminder, but so do the contents. There's an article about helping the servicemen and even a page showing a half dozen "servantless" houses small enough to care for by oneself in hard times. G... View more info

Publisher: Boston, Mass., Priscilla Publishing: 1918

The covers of Priscilla magazine are really sensational, but I think this one by Ronald Anderson may be my favorite to date. What a strong, bold graphic and such a pleasing vignette it portrays. As always, Priscilla is about needlework primarily, but these wartime issues don't flinch from reality either. It's all about making do and still making fine things, as well as service to one's country. It's quite large at 10"x14" and is clean and crisp. No mailing label, but it ... View more info

This one's quite large at 10-1/2"x15-1/2". Given such a size it's amazing that its still in very good condition with just a couple small edge tears (which I repaired with non-browning, almost invisible archival tape). The binding is firm, but I did re-enforce it at a couple spots, again with archival tape, so it doesn't tear at the spine which eventually leads to detachment. Many pretty things to make in these 26 pages, including a lovely lacy panel for a glass door. I ... View more info

There should be a slipcase with these four volumes of the Singer Sewing Library, but it has apparently been lost along the way. Still we have the four booklets in good condition -- tightly bound with pristine internals. Faults are confined to the outside and are not many in number -- toning to volume 1, a small stain to cover of three, all at back with the exception of No. 1 which shows a small pink stain to lower front corner. Booklets measure 5-1/2"x8-1/4" and have 64... View more info

Though this is actually a magazine, it's printed in newspaper fashion and yet remains remarkably good. There are few tiny edge tears and a chip from the side of page one, but I have been able to mend all tears at folds with non-browning archival tape which is nearly invisible. When opened the magazine measures 12"x16-1/2". The two brown stickers on the face are the mailing labels to De Soto, Missouri. This is the Christmas issue so there are holiday stories, but also an ... View more info
