Eight Coffee Trade Cards (Lion, Arbuckle, Gold Medal, Dilworth's)

Here we have eight trade cards, none dated, but likely turn-of-the-century. Three are from Lion, two from Arbuckle's,two from Gold Medal and the smallest one from Dilworth's. None have been pasted into an album, though the backs of all have toned from cuddling up too close to other high acidic paper items. There's a small margin stain to one, darkening to upper corner of one and toning to lower corner of another. Overall they are quite still nice. The lagest measures 3-1/4"x5-1/4" and the smallest(from Dilworth's) a petite 2-1/2"x3"

Gail Borden Eagle Brand Condensed Milk Two Trade Cards

It's very interesting that the cutest babies are in the older card (1886) and the -- shall we say, odder ones? -- followed the next year. Both cards have the same copy on reverse side, which is devoted to the directions for use. Interesting, too, that this product remains on the grocery shelves today. the pastel card measures 3-1/2"x5" and the other 3-1/2"x5-1/2". Both are clean and nice, though I did re-enforce a corner crease at bottom left on the pastel card with invisible non-browning archival tape. The other card has toned a bit at back. This one's not at all rare because it was too cute not to keep! It still charms collectors though and has even inspired modern look-alikes in the forms of magnets. This guy's the real deal though! He measures 2-1/2" across at the widest point, which is his feet, and 6" from the top of crown to the bottom of his feet. "King Pig" sits up and begs to be part of the "Rex Brand" line of meats packed by the Cudahy Company. Both front and back sides of the card are identical. A pretty image for a New York City candy company which produced a combination trade card and post card. The message "Park & Tilford's Temptingly Delicious Chocolates & Bon Bons Are The Best" runs across the bottom of the card leaving plenty of room for a message. The card shows a divided back and has not been written on, nor postally used. In 1899 Park & Tilford's were a high end grocery store, but by 1912 were receiving accolades for their industrialization which allowed them to make better candy faster. This has to be the oddest trade card ever produced. I've had it for many years and, as you can see, it is part of the montage photo at the top of my website. Star Soap Trade Cards Huge Chromolithographs (Victoriana)

Beautiful color-saturated chromolithographs advertising Star Soap which had a factory in Zanesville, Ohio. These cards are VERY big at 5-1/2" x 7-3/4". Both show little girls --one with her dog and the other washing her doll. The company, Schultz's Sops, introduced the product in 1865 which they say on the back of the cards "was over 20 years ago". Given that info they could date from 1885 to 1894. As you can see from the second photo one card is toned at the back and the shows what looks like red ink at the back. Both are quite legible though.

This is an exceptionally pretty trade card and fairly large too, measuring 3-1/2" x 6". On the reverse side the syrup is touted along with other Fleming preparations incluing Ivory Polish for the Teeth and Dr. C. McLane's Celebrated Liver Pills. As often the crd was designed to have the druggist sellign the product would have his name pritned t he bottom This one is W.R. Yan Cleveland, Ohio. Other than a small stain in the center of the text, the card is bright and beautiful.

This is a large and very pretty trade card which involves three different entities. Dr. McClanes came up with the "celebrated liver pills" which supposedly cured sick headache, billiousness, torpid liver, dyspepsia, malaria constiveness, impure blood, poor appetite, and nervousness. The Fleming Brothers were the next ones in when they began prepared the pills in Pittsburg. The cards then went to any druggist who would like to have his name on the back, as is the case here. This one was was W.R. Ryan of Cleveland, Ohio. The card measures 3-3/4" x 5-3/4 and is clean and nice on both sides.

This one's a mystery! I googled, I "binged", I searched everywhere, but none of the clues on this trade card led me to an Erie Hotel in Chicago except for ONE entry which doesn't seem right. The address on the card is 3700 Lake Park Avenue,Chicago, but the only vintage hotel with the Erie name was built in 1891 on State Street and was ultimately demolished. This Erie Hotel was likewise demolished because today the address is a newish residential building with $400,000 apartments.
