Price: $20.00

Publisher: New York, Barse & Hopkins:

Seller ID: 0149

Condition: Fine

I very much like these old gift books from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This one has no date, but is filled with vintage charm including such niceties as heavy paper with a deckled outer edge, a tipped-in color illustation at frontis (rather than having been printed on the page), a dustjacket, and gilt embossing to the front cover. Though Stevenson is listed as the author, the fact is there are many including Robert Browning, Tennyson, Abraham Lincoln and others. There are no illustrations other than the one mentioned, but the type fonts provide mch variation. Includes Brownings "Gr... View more info

By: N/A

Price: $25.00

Publisher: New York, Cupples & Leon: 1912

Seller ID: 0401

Condition: Fine in Good Box

Oh, how I love old gift books, but when I get one in its original box I have to work to remain dignified! This one is beautiful and was clearly kept as a treasure. The theme of course is the poems of John Russell Lowell paired with that of violets. Together they are totally charming. This one was given as a Christmas gift in 1912 and is recorded as such on the reverse of the front free endpaper. The hard cover boards are a padded faux leather which is pristine, as are the book pages. The box is soiled a bit and lightly worn, but the gem inside is a beauty. Art is brightly colored and plentifu... View more info

Price: $39.95

Publisher: Akron. Ohio, Saalfield Publishing: 1953

Seller ID: 2277

Condition: Very good condition

I grew up in Akron, Ohio home of the old and beloved Saalfield Publishing Company. The company was known for books in boxes such as this one and also its licensing for Shirley Temple books. Saalfield had novels too for older kids, so we never grew out of them until we weren't kids anymore. This particular box is new to me, but I would have loved it.The box says it contains 20 playbooks for drawing, coloring, picture hunts, riddles, connect the dots, games and mazes. Twenty it may have been, but it ended up housing 22 -- no repeats and no coloring. Fun gift! Measures 6" x 9". Books are clean an... View more info

What a lovely book -- clean and crisp as the day in 1987 that it ran off the press. No defects and shows as new. Joan Anglund was a big deal in the 1960's -- I remember both buying and being given her sweet little books. This one comes along twenty years later, but is still vintage Anglund. The book measures 4-1/2" x 7-3/4" and has 63 pages. The dustjacket will arrive in brand new mylar to keep it as beautiful as it is now. A lovely little gift. View more info

By: Browning, Robert

Price: $25.00

Publisher: London, Raphael Tuck & Sons: Early 1900's

Seller ID: 0839

Condition: Very good

I love vintage gift books, especially when they're made by Tuck & Sons. This one is a birthday book which has biographical info on the poet Robert Browning, plus a poem, followed by all the dates of the year for the buyer to keep track of birthdays of friends and family. Each date comes with a quote from a Browning work. The book is very attractive and looks like new from the outside. The inside shows zero writing and has just faint browning to a few isolated pages. It measures 5"x7-1/2" and is illustrated with six color illustrations rendered by J. Finnemore. View more info

Cheerful Words From the Bible (Early 20th Century Gift Book)

By: No Author or Editor

Price: $20.00

Publisher: New York, Cupples & Leon:

Seller ID: 1012

Condition: Very Good

This is a pretty little gift book with no date, but appears to be from the turn of the century -- early 1900's. The cover is white padded faux leather, very clean with just a light horizontal crease to back cover -- very superficial and not affecting the board itself. There are no names or writing and book is not paginated, but I counted 24 pages. All art, several of angels, is in full color. Designed to uplift the recipient. Measures 5"x8" View more info

The Message of the Bells, Or What Happened to Us On Christmas Eve (Gift Book)

By: Van Loon, Henrik Willem

Price: $15.00

Publisher: Garden City, New York, 1942

Edition: First Edition

Seller ID: 0150

Condition: Very Good

Most of the gift books I've had are from the turn of the century, but here we have one for from 1942, a charming Christmas story from a popular author of the period. Van Loon, well noted for his art history book, also illustrated this one. It was used once, as the special page reserved for the gift inscription reads "With Best Wishes From Mom and Pop 1942." It could be happily used again if desired, but nice just to keep as is too. The story is a true incident of the past and present with a reminder of the spoils of war. View more info

Normally when I buy gift books they're vintage, but this newish one refused to be left on the shelf. To add to the pleasure are maps and a plethora of black and white photographs. The book is quality made with a cloth binding, a paste-on photograph on cover, and pristine pages printed on quality coated paper. The book measures 4-1/2" x 8" and has 123 pages. View more info
